The Restaurant 2009

He isn't a home cook. But you illustrate the point. If home cooks can learn how to whip an egg white, he can be trained to do so too. He doesn't need to learn how to cook everything, just what they plan to have on the menu. Raymond will train him bit by bit and teach him, and I'm confident if anyone can train JJ, Raymond could.

Perhaps M Blanc has taken a little time to read the barrage of complaints on the message boarRAB as well as those sent to him personally and realised why people are so angry. IMO he probably did realise that his decision to make the Winkers the winners would be controversial but did not in any way expect such universal condemnation of his decision. Every single programme showed the Winkers either failing the tasks, blagging, cheating, with zero cooking skills, or just being inept....yet they won! The only thing that seemed to work in their favour was that they already had a successful cocktail bar business and therefore had acquired some business skills.

But, M Blanc, 'The Restaurant' was a programme about a couple (one as a chef and the other as front-of -house) being given the chance to open a restaurant. You don't open a restaurant with a chef that can't cook or, for that matter, follow a recipe, or even be interested in cooking, and not expect viewers to be annoyed! If the programme had been about who could deliver the best working concept, even if it meant hiring a chef, then fine...but it wasn't! In addition, the cronies were blatently contradicting themselves by the end. The final was a farce of monumental proportions.

Who was to blame? I don't know but perhaps..

Poor choice of candidates
Bad editing
Change of format
Loss of the challenges
The concept not the execution being the main criteria
A realisation, perhaps, half way through, that most candidates had faults too great to overcome and thus go into panic mode.
Arrogance all round..from the producers, Blanc and his cronies, and the Winkers themselves.

If Blanc has been made aware of the furore over his decision, he may be taking time to reflect how badly his reputation and credibility has suffered. Viewers feel mislead and conned!

A few people have commented that these seem to be the worse bunch of contenders so far and are speculating that the BBC have stitched up Raymond with a hopeless lot to make it "entertaining"

However, if you think back to the previous series I believe that there were only ever about 4 possibly 5 of the original couples who were even remotely likely to win. The others were chosen mainly for their entertainment potential.

Out of this year's selection I would say that this proportion is about the same.
IMO those in with a shout would be:

Chris and Nathan
Barney and Badger
Blonde girls (forgot their name)
Nigerian ladies

Borderline maybe the married couple. No I don't think they are good enough to win but they are probably no worse than say the Welsh Wok couple from last year and certainly no worse than that other couple from last year where the man had comedy ears and did a memorable Mexican evening.

I cannot believe that the Winkers were not 'introduced to the producers via a friend of a friend.......

Sorry, hate conspiracy theories but there a definate smell somewhere!

Crazy Ray is not a genius, he's just an ageing cook who has decided to cash in on his celebrity status (gained via the generosity of BBC tax payers) for the chance to make some extra dosh with a couple of poncy tw*ts and their inane cocktail fad.

Beetroot? Give me a break.

I think Chris was quite a dynamic cook ( not that that was ever in the RB's requirements anyway ) but his achievements were glossed over and not shown. I thought that apple soup with the crystalised sugar that he did at the cookery demo looked amazing as did many of his other dishes ...
