The Restaurant 2009

I loved the first series of The Restaurant.

Last year's wasn't nearly as good.

And I was even less impressed by this year's lot.

I'm presuming thousanRAB of couples apply? Do they pick the participants out of a hat? Because the quality of cooks and their partners was appalling.

I wish the standard was higher, but I fear the emphasis these days is on making car crash tv.

I thought the right couple left tonight. I cannot believe the guy had turned up on the show without knowing what sort of restaurant he and his mother were intending to set up.

Tonight's episode will end with the anouncement that all remaining restaurants will be closed and that The Restaurant will return in february 2010 in the old format. And all will be good again.

Auw!! WTF!!

That was my significant OH clipping me with a reality stick...
She must stop reading over my shoulder. Auw!! Auw!!

If I remember rightly, the morning following the 2 previous finals, the winners and RB have been on Breakfast on BBC1.

It will be interesting to see if this year they are on (or not!) and if they are what RB has to say.

Exactly.. they work as a team. He actually cooks and she is great at the front of house. And when they're having a rough time of it they support each other. They're perfect for this show.

I just wish he wasn't so hard on himself over the quality of his food but that won't have gone un-noticed by Raymond. He will respect that.

Like the Apprentice by the third series they seem to have gone for personality over ability. Unlike the Apprentice though the restaurant has 9 couples compared to 16, so whereas there may be half a dozen decent apprentices, there will be much less in the restaurant. None of the final 3 this year would have been in the final 3 of the first two series, and if this is the best the seires can provide then there is no point commissioning a 4th series. I really enjoyed the first 2 series and looked forward to both episodes each week, however this year it feels like a chore to watch one episode, keep expecting it to get better but it just seems to be worse every week and as you say the only way Raymond can redeem himself is by giving none of them a restaurant or maybe just Chris and ditching Nathan.

What an utter joke. I think people are so annoyed about this because it seemed fixed weeks ago and those two are the most dishonest, blagging liars I've seen on this programme.

- Why do people on here keep saying their concept was good? What was it again....picnics? We haven't heard them so much as mention it for about four weeks! No, their concept was nothing, zero, bugger all, except 'when it all goes wrong, make cocktails'. And as Chris said, they've played that card every week and got away with it every week. When the Nigerian resturant ladies were kicked out for abandonding their concept, where was the 'picnic' concept that week? Nowhere! Was it mentioned? No.

- All of a sudden, Chris and Nathan's concept is said to be poor. Since when? This was the first time they'd said that.

- Did anyone else notice the kitchen JJ got to work in and the one Chris was in? JJ has the huge, magnificent, beautiful kitchen, Chris gets a cramped little box room with a tiny table. Hmm, very fair.

- Lady Thingy expressly told them to pick veg from the garden. JJ phoned an order in. Was he picked up on it at all? No. Would others have been slated for it? Yes.

- James went out, leaving his waitress to do everything. Good Front of House? No. Was he picked up on it? No.
Would others have been slated for it? Yes.

- He then came back with supermarket salmon in a packet. Was he picked up on it? No. Would others have been slated for it? Yes.

- Funny how the two guests came late, making Chris' soup go tepid, wasn't it?

- People keep praising them for 'thinking on their feet'. By making cocktails? Without JJ's cocktail making skills what would they have done? Thinking on their feet my backside - I call it blagging and cheating.

- In any case, that was also Chris' first ever attempt at making a souffl

I think it's quite interesting that RB has tried to follow the controversy created by X Factor as other posters have mentioned, yet has failed to realise that while these types of shows create very controversial characters they stop short of allowing them to win!

JJ and James are basically Jedward. There's no way that Simon Cowell would have let Jedward win ... if he had the public would have exploded in the way this forum has and the credibility of the show would have been shot to shreRAB. Jedward were great for providing entertainment, creating column inches and causing controversy ... but they couldn't sing and in the end the public voted them out.
JJ and James played the same role on The Restaurant but instead of not being able to sing on a singing show, they couldn't cook on a cooking show. Unfortunately RB didn't realise that the gimmick was really the fact that they were rubbish and got carried away and allowed them to win instead ....

Why does Raymond do this?? It can't be the money (he has plenty of that)....it can't be his love of food (the people taking part are cretinous no-marks who have never tasted good food in their lives let alone cooked it)...it can't be to find a business partner (I have eaten chez Raymond a hundred times and there is no way these people should be let anywhere near any business, let alone his...)..it can't be ego (I've had French men, not all of them admittedly, but enough to know that they are perfectly capable of stroking or having stroked without having the hoi polloi stroking their egos)...it can't be the respect of other chefs (he knows that ALL chefs despise each other whatever they do)..the man is mad!!
