The Restaurant 2009

Only a couple of weeks to go now so I thought we needed a new thread. For follow-up to last year's (including 'Plate Expectations') see:

This year at least three of the restaurants are in Bristol:

The use of somewhere outside the Thames Valley is probably connected with the fact that RB has spent a lot of time in Bristol recently opening a new "Brasserie Blanc".

HowarRAB has since closed:

I hadn't seen that link. However, that is the kind of concept I think would work. I don't like the name.."The London Cocktail Club"..it sounRAB too stuffy.
But a fun, party bar, serving a selection of trendy dishes to share could be a big hit. How many girls (of any age) want to sit down to a serious meal when they are out for a good night. Low comfortable seating, a laid-back atmosphere with some good music. Cocktails, decent selection of wines, shots, interesting bottled lagers, and a range of modern, easily prepared dishes that could be consumed or shared without any fuss. Of course, that concept is more of a bar that does food..not a restaurant that does cocktails. Which begs the question..why enter the show, unless it's for publicity ?
I do think the "winkers" have a grasp of the most important concept of any business..profit. I agree, they are very much style over substance, but that often works in any sector of the market.

:D :D I'd substitute "tool" for "lost lamb" but agree with the rest.

So they're not cooking? Just serving wine? I'm confused.

Maybe it is just me, but I feel his last sentence is a thinly-veiled barbed attack at those of us who complained to him thinking The Restuarant was about cooking rather than "Can't Cook, Won't Cook, will knock up a quick cocktail when all else fails" !

I've been deliberately avoiding this thread until I got around to watching the final.

Horrified!

So the take home message is blag your way through life, screw up the tasks asked of you and you'll be rewarded over those who have the skills and put the effort in when required...!?

That's true, I suppose, but Nathan seems none too bright and his personality is devoid of charm, these things can't be taught.

JJ can read and might get better, and anyway his customers will be pissed.

Maybe there’s going to be a miraculous transformation after a cooking lesson with Raymond and suddenly they can all cook.

Watched and enjoyed Series 1 throughout, lost interest in Series 2 halfway through. Didn't expect much of Series 3, but I'd twigged after the second week that the tasks were mostly designed for entertainment, the criterion for progress was the concept, and the absolute non-negotiable - NO FLUNKING THE TASKS.

If the Winkers win and the judges put their money into it, JJ will be out of that kitchen in five minutes. I suspect ultimately what they are looking for is FOH and image, not cooking skills which throughout look to have been unremarkable.
