The remote control for my 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee isn't working...?

the dealership said that since it isn't the battery that is causing the remote control (unlock/lock) to work they are going to have to tear open my door panel or whatever and go in through the door to make it work. they said they didn't know how much it was going to be.

do you think this is the source of the problem? and how much do you think it would be? and do i have to go to a dealership for this?

before they go into the panel have they checked another remote. Sometimes the remotes just die (due to wear and tear ) A remote is much more cost effective than the labor of going through the door. The dealership usually have spare remotes just hanging out. they don't want to just offer them to you since their parts departments sell them for $$
