I agree. That's restrictive because it doesn't allow you to vote for who you feel is best.

The main thing to remember is to vote for what you feel is the BEST, not your FAVORITE.

I actually thought it was great. Although I didn't know, or watch half the films, cause I'm more of a Horror genre person, so I wasn't familiar with alot of the films. Now if you ever decide to do an all Horror Awards, I'm definately there. *Wink Wink* *HINT HINT* ;)

I also think there should be a limit as well, as to how many times you can nominate the same actor, or film, in a different category. I think once should be fine really, that way you can get more of a spread-out vote.

But if you've nominated something, doesn't that mean that you'd want to vote for that person?

Yes, don't get me wrong - I thought Javier Bardem's portrayal of Anton Chigurrh was fantastic and he scared the hell out of me, but I thought Casey's role was more difficult and to pull it off with such aplomb, well, he really deserved the Oscar. But I guess the Oscar voting block are quite influenced by the awards trail and public reception and everything? I'm sure Casey would have had a bigger shot if Jesse James had been seen by more people (and had more people rave over his performance). Oh well, nothing we can do - but what I know is that Casey will get his Oscar sometime in his career. He's an amazing actor and I'm sure he'll be recognised for his work one day.

Yeah. Did you like the narrator though? I didn't have a problem with him but I know a lot of people found him annoying, especially in the day where the assassination happens - you know, with Bob Ford looking in on Jesse James' room and everything. I thought the narration was superfluous there but the rest of the time the narrator was OK.

Go watch! Do you have the DVD or something? I know there are two versions, right - which one do you have?

Thank you so much for your comments and opinions Caro!

It will help a lot when we do the Reel Awards next year.

We are going to try to use some of the suggestions/comments in the Reel HORROR Awards to see how they play out.

The scene in which the assassination actually happens, I felt needed those pauses for dramatic effect. But after that, like you said, it's like they cramped in the remaining part explaining what happened to the brothers after that.

I have "There Will Be Blood" I just haven't watched it yet.

Thanks again for the acknowledgment for my work with the awards. It was definitely enjoyable.

But it would not have been doable if it weren't for everyone who participated! So thank you!

:group_hug:

I hope through discussions you moderators and i can refine the awards for next year.

I agree tao with your comment about voting for who you think is the best and not just your favorite. For me, that was the upset with the awards, seeing Hairspray taking so much when it was obvious, based on other nominees in certain categories, who could have won. I think that should have been an added rule, "Vote for who you think is best and not just for your favorite".

True. And oddly enough the last 20 minutes were too cramped, I felt. Which scenes were you affected by though? It's been a while since I saw it but I didn't feel like looking at my watch, if you know what I mean. It wasn't that bad. But I agree, it was a very slow-going movie (which probably put a lot of people off). And did you watch There Will Be Blood? If you did, how did you find that runtime - was it also too long, or did you not feel its length?

I second what Christina said...I can't take any credit for the awards, this was all Melika's doing...she put a lot of hard work into this and should be recognized all on her own.

I like the idea of the moderators and Melika picking the movies/actors up for voting....and I would think it would be in a fair manner.

How many would we limit each movie to? 5?

Also I think a reminder to voter's that in some categories they should be voting for what/who they actually think is the best--not just what is their favorite movie...Not to be rude but Zac winning over lets say Casey for Best Supporting Actor is a bit far fetched....

Gone Baby Gone was excellent!

I liked Assassination of Jesse James, but I did notice the length. It seemed like scenes were just longer than they needed to be. Like for dramatic pauses, 20 seconds would go by and we're still waiting to see what happens.

Exactly! I think that Juno only won Best Screenplay because it was hip and funny and everyone loved Juno. Because in terms of content, tone, even for handling such a difficult topic alone... Lars and the Real Girl should have won. I LOVED Lars and the Real Girl, it should have done a lot better at the awards circuit than it did. Ridiculous. Yeah, I see myself watching Lars and the Real Girl many times and loving it each time - I don't see the same for Juno.

 I understand. Well yeah it's a Western but as my first it wasn't so bad. And it is slow-going but I didn't really feel its length. But I'm sure other people will. Maybe one day when you're more free :) And yes, he really isn't just Ben's little brother anymore, which is great! Oh, I didn't watch Gone Baby Gone - heard Ben's directing was actually pretty good?

Thank you for setting up the poll, Chris! :)

Thank you Melika for running everything!

While I didn't nominate Hairspray, I like that here in FF movies that don't get love from big awards can have their day. However, as Chris suggested, there can also be a process of limiting movies to a certain number of categories so that everyone can have a chance, underdogs and mainstream favorites.

I freakin' LOVED Lars and the Real Girl!!!! One of my favorites by far. While Juno is a great film, I think after you watch it two or three times it loses it's appeal. I don't think that could happen with Lars.

I did netflix Jesse James but there was no time to watch it and I sent it back. I just couldn't bring myself to watch a movie with a title like that, that was almost 3 hours long, and has Brad Pitt in it. Plus it has a western feel to it and I loathe westerns... And it just looked boring. But I'm sure that Casey is great in it. I loved him in Gone Baby, Gone. He's definitely more than Ben's little brother now :)

I agree with that suggestion.

I got like ten PM's in a row literally only a minute apart all for Hairspray, it's like a group banded together. Nothing wrong with voting for your favorite but having limited categories is a good idea.

But I'm also in favor of the idea of having the moderators and myself do the nominations with a select few categories for the fans to nominate. (ie Best Hissy Fit, Best Side Kick, Best Scream etc...)

I figure if there are three moderators and myself, we could all submit one choice for each category so each category will have 4 nominations.

Of course it would have to be fine tuned to work properly. But it's something to think about!

To everyone who quoted me when I asked about nominating something and voting the same thing, don't get me wrong, I did nominate something and then for something else as well. It's just that most of the time, people would vote the thing they nominated for - in a perfect world that would be because they think what they nominated for was also the best, but I know that doesn't happen all the time. That could explain the Hairspray wins.

You don't have to tell me that!

I agree, Paul Dano was incredible as Eli Sunday. Everyone talks - rightly - of the monstrous performance DDL gave as Plainview, but Paul wasn't overshadowed by DDL and that's huge credit to him. His Eli Sunday was weaselly and unlikeable but that was a very good performance as well, just more understated and less showy. After the movie a friend said she hated Eli but I thought that was a strength of the movie, not a weakness - Eli's not there to be liked, and neither was Plainview.

But have you seen Jesse James, Chris? Casey was amazing. He was Bob Ford - even until today I get chills thinking about how good he was. Not that Javier Bardem was bad as Chigurrh - far from it - but I think Casey just deserved it a bit more.

And quite rightly so. You know what got ignored, big time? Lars and the Real Girl. Yeah, Juno was hilarious and kudos to Diablo Cody but Juno was just hip and funny. Lars and the Real Girl was compassionate and heartwarming (without being cheesy) and considering the subject matter that was a hard, hard task. It should have won Best Screenplay. And Ryan Gosling should have been nominated for Best Actor.

My only suggestion is that I think films should have a limit of categories it can be nominated for. Obviously this year there was a favoritism towards Hairspray. And while yes, it was nominated and won a lot of awards during the season, it didn't win everything or get nominated for everything. The academy awards had it right with the nominations it did and didn't give them.
