The Ratings Thread (Part 13)

I don't get why Studio Five is doing so badly. Sure it's not going to be everyone's cup of tea but it *is* good for what it is trying to be. If you like celebrity gossip, it's a really enjoyable half hour.

Very pleased to see Million Pound Drop gaining. Should definitely be coming back.

It's the Rod Stewart one which has already been shown several times on ITV1 and ITV2, probably because Rod is the subject of Life Stories on Saturday and tells us about his IVF experiences. He gets his wife and her frienRAB up on stage and there is a sycophantic presentation by Ben Shephard. Not to be missed (but only if you are a Rod fan)

I did wonder about that, but I disagree - people are used to tuning into Coronation Street after EastEnders now, so I don't think it'd have much impact on either Monday or Friday's showings.

I don't think the Friday 7.30pm slot has performed that brilliantly in recent times - it just looks good when compared to Thursday's!

I'll disagree on this one. If we take Score's proposal in moving Emmerdale to an hour long on Monday, that'd lock out the 7.30pm slot straight away. ITV could easily air hour long's using the Coronation Street lead in on Thursday's to counteract BBC1. Friday's is a weak night anyway, and there's only one free slot because of EastEnders.

Besides, if 'more free slots' were beneficial to BBC1 how come they haven't found more hits? You rightly name Life of Riley but I can't really name another show that's done fantastically in that slot. If they can't fill one slot a year round, how can they manage with two?

That's true, and I'm surprised they're not airing they're better rating shows in the autumn against EastEnders instead of repeats. Maybe The X Factor has taken up the budget? :p

I like John Barrowman but you really do need a good host for the show. Bruce is good but not as good as he was when he was hosting The Generation Game. He was peerless during that period.

Graham Norton would be so much better.

That's because STV opted out of the football, so whatever reason the averages for the STV 'slot' are also listed there as the half an hour 'slots' on ITV1 HD. Processing error by BARB I think.

Poirot had a knock on effect on NCIS but I imagine if it wasn't for Downton Abbey, it would have been shown on Sunday and gain a much bigger audience.

The Apprentice did well but it's not really talked about much compared to previous years. I imagine it'll be back in March/April for 2011. Have they have started filming for the seventh series yet.

Masterchef the Proffesionals did great, I imagine the final will hit 5m+.

Interesting that they launching it on a Tuesday prempting NCIS and NCIS Los Angeles although I guess it will mean fewer repeats later on but I assume that'll mean there won't be a results show.

Off the Map I assume if it is a hit will probably move episodes from season 1 to season 2 like they did with Grey's Anatomy which had 14 episodes in its first season but only air 9 episodes with the remaining 4 episodes in season 2.

Good to see Hollyoaks increasing rather than decreasing through the week, also oddly impressive for The Simpsons repeat. I don't think that's a high for Million Pound Drop, I distinctly remember it peaking at 2.5m last series.

I presume you mean for BBC's shows, but seeing as you mention 'peak':

The X Factor: 13.5m
Life Stories: 6.7m

ITV Press Office also noted in a tweet "Lots of exciting news coming next week."

I have to say that 4.3m doesn't look that great for a winning share of audience at 9pm (Crimewatch - BBC1).

It's probably a night that ITV execs would have written off themselves looking at their schedule - it was very weak. It should be more of a contest tonight with The Apprentice up against a new feature-length Poirot.

Yes but I doubt that the celebrity specials of The Cube will be so contrived. It's not the fact that they had a celebrity couple on that bugged me in particular, and I don't particularly mind George Lamb, it's that the questions were blatantly easier and the whole thing felt so manipulated. I normally agree with what you've said about controversy, and The X Factor is a clear example of viewers saying they won't watch again but they do, but something about tonight felt very uneasy to me, and I didn't like it at all.

Thanks C.M.W, do you know when the second series of 'So you think you can dance' will air? As there seems to be a new 'magicans' show on Saturdays in January.

I can see your point, but it was only a few years ago that Hollyoaks was doing really well. I really hope it gets itself sorted out because it's a nice little soap, different from the rest.

A lot of people like to mock Hollyoaks but it actually deals with some serious issues and different stories that are relevant to a younger audience and it is a great source for introducing new talent. I hope that the clocks going back will mean a slight boost. It neeRAB to be above 1.5m consistently all week for it to return to a respectable level.

In Bryan's day, ratings were around 2m and that was only back in 2007/2008 so I think it's very possible that Hollyoaks can be saved and go back up to those levels as there's clearly an audience for it. It's just finding that audience again.

I don't think it's too difficult either to keep up with a daily soap - there's E4, the Sunday omnibus and you can catch up online, with past episodes of up to a month being available. I catch up online because of other commitments, as I'm sure many other people do.

It's still only averaging around 90,000 across the 3 hours, peaking at around 140,000 in the 8am half hour. Up slightly but nothing major. Channel 5 actually ditched the weekend simulcast of Sunrise due to low ratings following a relaxing of their news requirements earlier this year, so I can't see it being massively popular on ITV1.

I bet the producers of Eastenders and Neighbours would barbecue their wives and kiRAB to get audience figures like this again. Also the power of Bond was still huge in 1988 with the third or fourth repeat of FYEO getting massive ratings. Yet 21 million people had a huge lapse of taste by watching Bread, after the second series it became dull and predictable and became more like a soap than a sitcom.

Seems like Channel 4's stunt worked for Million Pound Drop worked quite spectacularly then.

Soaps again really close... and Emmerdale nearly beating EastEnders share wise. I'll tell you what, if Emmerdale does go head-to-head with EastEnders later this month thanks to I'm a Celebrity, I could see Emmerdale potentially winning it. Coronation Street also winning on a Friday night is unusual, I can only assume EastEnders' audience were trick-or-treating...

Not bad for Daybreak or Lorraine there either, if I'm to be totally honest. :o I was expecting Friday in half term to be the lowest rating for Daybreak, not the highest.

The Cube is an Objective production not Endemol.

They recorded a pilot with JLC. According to Broadcast at the time they deemed the cost per episode to be too expensive for the slot they had in mind so turned it down.

Wasn't the X factor going to lose millions of viewers when they moved the auditions to Arenas. It was the worst decision ever at the time according to RAB :D

It will be interesting to see what effect Halloween has on this weekend's ratings. Last year X-Factor lost 1.4m viewers on Halloween and recorded its lowest live episode rating of the season. Strictly on the other hand, was not effected one bit. This year, Halloween is officially tomorrow (Sunday) night though so it could be that we see a decline then rather than tonight.

Interestingly, if X-Factor falls in a similar manner tonight as it did last year on the Halloween Saturday, Strictly could well be within 300k or so of X-Factor, given how much stronger Strictly is this year.

ITV are showing "Farewell Jack" on WeRAB 10th November - 19:30 up against Wallace and Gromit

I thought this would be between the two Corrie episodes on either Monday or Friday.
