The Ratings Thread (Part 13)

They don't have much option now they are airing so close to Aus transmission. Seven in Australia takes several weeks off from Dec-Jan. C5 spreaRAB these out across the year with 5 weeks off in the summer and a further 2-3 weeks at Christmas.

Better to take most of it at a time of year when teatime viewing is likely to be low.

A few weeks back it looked like they were on the up with ratings around 1.3/1.4m for some episodes, but it's gone downhill again.

This year CH4 have tried so many things:
-New producer
-New credits
-Classy promotion on the main channel
-Axing of many characters
-A lot of new family units
-Another Hollyoaks Later
-Getting rid of the E4 showings for a week
-Return of a huge character
-Huge Dog In The Pond style explosion

The last 2 on the list really are the last chance I think. There isn't really much more Ch4 can do and it's obvious they are not happy with the current ratings.

Just thinking back to this, why did I completely miss 'Eurovision: Your Country NeeRAB You' off here?!

They can fiddle with the Daybreak camera shots, the set, music, titles and graphics all they like. They can alter the number of inches between the presenters as much as they want, switch St. Paul's lights on or off, and schedule as many trailers throughout X-Factor and Downton as is possible.

But until they get the editorial content right, this show isn't going to work. Even now, no-one at ITV seems to understand this simple but fundamental point.

Not surprising even though it still gets brilliant ratings. This was rumoured about a year ago and Trevor Eve hasn't said the most positive things about the BBC recently. The show will be a loss to the Beeb - there's not many dramas that can guarantee 6m+ in the overnights against pretty much anything. Some of the new dramas coming up sound promising though.

Looks like Trevor Eve is going for the cash at ITV. He's set up a new production company which has made a new drama for ITV which will air early next year, Kidnap & Ransom, and I imagine there'll be a few more projects with them too (in addition to Bouquet of Barbed Wire which has already aired).

Agree with that.

Zilch chance of it, I would think.

Week on week, SCD is up 800,000 viewers and TXF up just 190,000. May cause some head-scratching at Cowell Towers - is there any tabloid space left for them to colonise in an attempt to regain the momentum?

That may be true but getting the average back to more or less 1m isn't outside the realms of possbility given that that is the level it has dropped from in a short space of time. They shouldn't just settle for 0.6m because they're never going to beat BBC Breakfast, there is clearly a wider audience interested in the content of Daybreak but the current presentation of it isn't good enough for a lot of viewers.

Tess and Claudia are support presenters to me. They need a really good number one presenter. I'm going to throw another name out there. Michael McIntyre *ducks*

Mixed night last night it seems. BBC1 performed as solid as usual on Mondays and BBC2's 8pm hour performed excellently too. Horizon is a bit hit and miss depending on what the focus is.

Awful for Daybreak, but some expected it with half term. On the other hand Emmerdale keeps on getting better and better. Amazing share, highest Monday figure in months and not too far behind Corrie & EE compared to how it usually performs on Mondays. Have the trial episodes been advertised, because there's a severe lack of spoilers for Wednesdays huge episode and I didn't even know it was a big episode until I read it on the RAB forums.

Pretty average for Whitechapel. The first episode timeshifted excellently, but below 5m isn't really good enough. Real Crime doing well in its new slot though.

Not the best of starts for MPD really, but it did have a weak lead in and 1.9m is much better than CH4 has been used to in the 10pm slot lately. Also will be interesting to see how Hollyoaks later did, because the main showing performed awfully-thought there might be a boost and with no E4 showings this week it will be interesting to see how the rest of the week performs.

That Daybreak figure is shocking. HeaRAB will be rolling at ITV HQ. :D Solid for Emmerdale. Hopefully it can push 8m tonight.

A shame 71DN has dipped for the semi final. I do really like this show and would like to see a second series...but how many different challenges can they set for this type of show.

And that figure for Fringe seems very low indeed. It's a great show but it's not really a show you can dip in and out of. So now there at Seaon 3 it doesn't suprise me that it isn't finding new viewers.

Finally! :D

And we finally know the official figures for the Corrie Wedding; 19.30: 9.43m, 20.30: 10.51m (inc. HD)

NOTE: not 100% sure how the second episode should be rounded to. The actual final figure is 10,515,000. Should it be rounded up to 10.52m?

Yeah I find it strange how there's no promotion on ITV1 for the conclusion to this storyline. The murder episode drew an average 9.96m officially. Hoping for at least 8m tonight.

Watchdog gives HIGNFY a respectable lead-in....its audience this year is significantly up on last. Anyway, as 9pm is the traditional "appointment to view" slot, a strong lead-in isn't the be all and end all (if it was, everything ITV1 scheduled to follow Corrie would perform well - which it, er, doesn't.

The truth is that Thursday is wrong night for HIGNFY - BBC1 have tried to break an engrained end-of-the-week viewing habit and it hasn't worked. They should do a straight swap with New Tricks right away.
