The Ratings Thread (Part 13)

I suspect they won't want to do that because it'll result in another night rating badly and, as you've said yourself, harm Coronation Street which isn't what they would want to do with their flagship scripted show.

Say for example, ITV moves that Friday 8.30pm episode to Tuesday 8pm. It will result in a new 'FlopZone' on Fridays between 8-10pm and Corrie wouldn't rate as well up against Holby City. Basically the overall situation would be even worse for ITV1 than it is at the moment if they did that.

One thing that is blatantly clear about Tuesday nights at the moment is that the Grimefighter repeats should be pulled from the 7.30pm slot because it's been rating appaullingly and will have most likely had a negative knock-on effect on the 8pm programme. A decent programme in that slot is capable of about 3m (as we've seen with Children's Hospital earlier this year) or if ITV don't want to spend cash, then surely repeating Countrywise or Youve Been Framed there would be better.

Surf's Up achieved a strong premiere audience of 1.58m (7.6%) cementing C5's position as the family favourite every Sunday.

Where Eagles Dare also performed well Saturday teatime, crushing BBC Two's Match of The Day Live. (1.2m v 0.9m)

And the overnights (just for comparison purposes):

2005: 2.5m
2006: 4.2m
2007: 5.5m
2008: 6.9m
2009: 7.8m

Quite astonishing year-on-year growth. It was obviously helped by the channel switch for series 3 but even so that's quite brilliant. Another interesting fact is that the first ever episode got an overnight of just 1.9m, which is pretty poor for BBC2 - I bet the BBC never thought it would turn out to be the hit it is now!

I honestly don't know how they manage it but they always have to take things too far and try and over-engineer everything. Net result tonight was a major fail. Viewers will have seen straight through that.

Quite strange, even though it's dropped recently it did seem to be quite stable around 500-600,000, wonder if it was a one off blip?

Has the link between Twitter and ratings been proven yet?

I'd have thought perhaps slightly higher myself - do we know if viewers are more likely to stay up later on darker nights rather than during the summer?

GMTV was averaging around 1m 18 months ago which isn't that long in terms of breakfast TV. The GMTV figures were falling and the statement ITV released about year on year decline basically says that if GMTV was still on air then it would be doing worse than Daybreak is. Breakfast TV is something most viewers dip in and out of, and rather than switch off completely I think a lot of viewers will just be watching less of it hence bringing the average down. Even if they can somehow make their current viewers watch for a bit longer then the ratings will artificially increase and if they can start an increase, then its a good start. These things take ages to bed in but as long as the ratings are going in the right direction then thats all that matters if they want to avoid such drastic changes. To properly analyse it they need to release the actual reach.

The problem with MPD is that nobody wins anything. It's rapidly losing its novelty for me for this reason. I don't know whether it's the game or the contestants they're choosing.

Cancelling Daybreak would be a ridiculous decision, they need to give the show time. Obviously the ratings are not good but it would be much easier to work on Daybreak rather than come up with something new or returning to GMTV. I think it would be a knee-jerk reaction to the negative tabloid reports.

I see they have already changed the background behind Adrian and Chritstine when the London view is dark and dreary, which at this time of the year is pretty much all the time.
