'The Queen'

I'm referring to the film with Helen Mirren...

I'd be interested to know peoples' thoughts on this film.

I'd like to know exactly how much of this film is based on fact, and how much is based on speculation.
Example: they made Cherie Blair out to be very cynical of the Royal family - is this true? I don't know much about her, but surely that kind of thing might be slightly dodgy to make up.

I'd really like peoples' opinions on the film. I've also put this in the Movies forum, but its so quiet there I'll probably wait days for a reply :)

Cherie Blair is notoriously anti royalist and I think Campbell confirmed his portrayal as accurate. I am no supporter of the monarchy but this film left me feeling a little sorry for the Queen. It is like the world has moved on and she is stuck in this stiff upper lip, Britain of the 1950's.

I watched The Queen the other day, and found it quite heart wrenching to be honest. Not just because of the Diana tragedy, but of how (if it's based on fact) the Royal family struggled to deal with it.

Like ValLambert, I don't think they'd be able allowed to portray characters like Cherie or Campbell the way they came across on screen, unless it was based on truth. And I don't recall any issues arising about the film being slanderous to those two. So who knows, maybe with that film we were given a small insight as to what occurred that week for the Royal family.

And just as an aside comment, I thought Michael Sheen's portrayal of Tony Blair was outstanding!

Or wait six months and it should show up on ITV on the anniversary of Princess Diana's death. It is a co production with Granada TV and I read it will be part of the tenth anniversary programming. My guess is Sunday September 2nd at 9pm.

I thought the film was excellent. I don't normally watch dramas like this, but I thought Michael Sheen's and hellen mirren's performance in the Queen was excellent. When I first saw the film I was quite spooked out at how much Helen Mirren did really look like the Queen.

Great film - and Helen Mirren as the Queen  the resemblance was great!

Does make you wonder how much is fact though - some comments were "interesting" shall we say!!

Of course they made a lot up, its not like they asked the Queen, is it? Thats why I have no time for this film, I hate this sort of rubbish.

None of us know the Queen or are ever likely to, she's as much entitled to her privacy as anyone else.

I feel sorry for anyone who takes this film as gospel :D

I wish I had placed a bet on this. See my quote above which I posted back in March with a prediction on when ITV would show The Queen. Just seen it advertised and it is on Sunday September 2nd at 9pm!

I think it is to do with the fact that ITV or Granada I think specifically funded the film so they get exclusive rights. Its not even been on Sky Box office and is under a year old. Could be the quickest ITV have ever shown a film after cinema release. The ad even says An ITV Production. i always thought it had the feel of a Sunday night ITV drama! My prediction was simply based on the fact that it is the weekend of the Diana Aniversary and I thought it would be ideally suited to the Sunday 9pm slot. I think I should be a scheduler!

Helen Mirren is a living masterpiece! She portrayed our Liz perfectly I think.

As for the film itself? Well I enjoyed it very much. How true it is I guess we will never know, but it certainly didn't put Prince Phillip and Princess Margaret in a very good light did it?

Yes and its interesting that ITV are promoting this as 'Drama Premiere' and not a 'movie premiere' in the sae way they would one of their own made for television dramas. I find this a bit odd given it won Helen Mirren an oscar so is actually a movie

Yes i picked up on that. You would think it was one of their brand new made for tv dramas being shown for the first time and that it had never been at the cinema and on dvd. You would think they would promote it as Helen Mirren's oscar winning and bafta winning performance.
