Just Saw It. Nice Film

Quick Review
The Pursuit of Happyness

I liked this film. It had great performances by Will, Thandie and Jaden. I can see Will winning an Oscar for "Pursuit"

B/B+

I saw this movie today and quite frankly I didn't like it. I was pretty much bored with it and found myself falling asleep to it on occasion.

It's sad what happened to the guy and all but it was too predictable. A family that's poor but manages to make it up to the top. Good for him- move on.

I saw the special on Oprah with Will and his son, and the real guy that has his life based on in this moive.

Leo Dicaprio "The Departed"/"Blood Diamond"
Forest Whitaker "The Last King of Scotland"
Peter O Toole "Venus"

Will Smith gives his best performance since... Hitch? Um, I, Robot?

Seriously though, the Fresh Prince deserves that Globe nomination. The movie was solid without being overly preachy. IMO, Will and Jaden's chemistry is what makes this movie work although Thandie's character was the weakest. Also, Chris' narration mentions Jefferson and the pursuit of happiness, but outside of the stockbroker job, Chris never really says what his idea of happiness is unless I missed it.

B+

You know, even though they wrote about him in the end credits, I still got the feeling he didn't quite make ends meet until very recently - and the success of this film was part of it.

Oh, he made it out of Glyde Memorial, so he techincally wasn't homeless any more, but as far as making it big - seemed like that came only in the last couple of years...

But really that's not what the film's about, so it doesn't matter, right? :look:

I think it was really realistic, how bad some people have it..and maybe it didn't show his "happyness" because he was still in pursuit and he didn't find it until way later (they showed what happened to his character in the end)

Anjinator - Me too. That scene gets to me every single time I see the trailor.

So cool how he is slowly working with all his kids.

The trailer is so touching...the bathroom scene...and his crying...omg, I lost it! I can not wait to see Will/Jaden together...he and Trey wwdere so cute in the 'Just the Two of Us' video back in the day, so it's going to be cute seeing him with his other boy. He will have to work with Willow when she gets older. ;)

Well, I saw the trailer attached with Stranger Than Fiction. I'm looking forward to seeing this, even if it's only because it was filmed in the city I live. It should be awesome to see what scenery they chose.

I think my mom mentioned seeing the Fresh Prince shopping with Jada at the Union Square Macy's, kind of a cool tidbit.

Oh, I wish I'd seen that - I'd be interested in learning more about this guy.

 I'm only laughing because you say it's predictable, which is funny when you consider it's a real-life story (meaning sure you can predict it -we know what's going to happen before we even watch it).

That being said, we're all entitled to our opinions and some people just aren't going to connect with the film. That's cool. :)

*********

My view - I went into this film hoping to have a good cry (a very strange perspective for me, since I normally hate sappy family-oriented films), because I just wanted to feel good about the world right now.

...Only that's not what I got.

Don't get me wrong - I loved the film, and Will Smith was not surprisingly terrific (I thought he was phenomenal as Ali - hat was a pivotal time in my life and I remember it vividly, and Will Smith truly, and somewhat surprisingly, pulled it off, so tackling this role couldn't have been much worse).

It's just that the film - as the narrator/protagonist says - is about the PURSUIT of happiness, not happiness, per se. My companion thought the film should have dwelled more on his successes, but I was taken in my the sheer frustration and stress of watching someone trying to get break after break, and not always making it.

Real human drama - especially that of a father and son - is something we just don't get enough of. It was painful for me to watch, and if I'd known what I was getting into I would have waited until it came out on DVD (I just lost one of my closest friends and stress and depression aren't what I need right now), but ultimately I'm glad I saw it, thought it was an exceptional film, and if I don't hear Oscar buzz I'll know (not that I don't already) that the Academy Awards truly are crap.

Also - ohmygoshhowcuteislittleJaden! *squee*
