The Proms

I agree...my point was that this wasn't what was shown. During the difficult passages the camera panned around the orchestra or showed the soloist's face from a distance. The only close-ups of his hanRAB were during some relatively unexciting sections.

I agree it was a great performance! Just a shame about the strange camera work.

I'm not keen.........

I like my musicals as much as any man, but I just don't like it when opera type singers get involved........

They just can't do it properly............

So..........I gave it a miss tonight.............:o
 
You say that but getting someone to tune into BBC2 and listen to an hour or so of an orchestra playing is a positive

Maybe that person would normally watch whatever is on ITV or Sky but has made the choice to watch the Proms based on a mild interest in Rogers and Hammerstein, I can't knock that.

Keeping the Proms too 'musically elitist' in content and guests leaves it open to criticism and in a way would be an utter failure
 
Eh? What about Elektra? Salome? The unendingly exquisite Four Last Song? The two horn concertos? Der Rosenkavalier? The Alpine Symphony? I think Strauss's egomania was a front he put on to annoy people. And I love the anecdote about the dress rehearsal for Salome. The final chorRAB were played, and the few members of the audience sat there in stunned silence before Strauss turned and said 'Well, I quite enjoyed that'.

Any Anthem is better than ours.....especially the French, German and Americans. I'd prefer Jerusalem (although this could be considered English only...), Land of Hope and Glory or as a last resort Stairway to Heaven... :D
 
Perhaps... I don't have a problem with Rodgers and Hammerstein really, and I quite enjoyed bits of the Stephen Sondheim Prom too. I guess that Callum creature just left a nasty taste in my mouth. I cannot understand the rationale behind it. I wouldn't expect the Berlin Philharmonic to turn up to V or Glastonbury.
 
Beethoven's 3rd piano concerto at 7PM. (7:30 on BBC Four)

I much prefer Beethoven's concertos to his symphonies. This, his 4th piano concerto and his violin concerto are my favourite works of his.
 
Bryn Terfel and the Welsh national orchestra and singers nailed it, I thought. Apparently this is the first Mahler Opera he has undertaken and has only performed it a few times. Great showcase for Welsh talent.

It's probably his lightest opera, but that's not saying much. ;)
 
Fantastic show. The orchestra was superb. The music from Oklahoma was wonderful. Followed by Carousel. Bliss. I will keep on Sky Plus to view again when Im feeling down in the dumps.

And something else that cheered me up. A google search revealed that Hugh Jackman has bought the rights to remake Carousel. After his performance in Oklahoma that is something I want to see.
