The Proms

This Prom was one of the finest I've ever seen and the highlight for me of this years Proms. As you say there were some glaring omissions especially to leave out probably the most well known song in the entire R&H repertoire i.e "You'll never walk alone", a song sung at football matches by people who probably never heard of R&H, was wrong, even though its going to be sung on the last night.

Correction: they WILL show the 1910 prom next Thursday on BBC4 in lieu of the Schubert and Mozart concert.

So I'll listen on the radio tonight and probably just tune in next week to see what hilarious 1910 garb the Prommers are wearing.

Yes, the camera work is infuriating at times and was far better the nights before with Paul Lewis playing Beethoven Piano Concertos and they seemed, by then to have some special remote cameras set up for viewing the keyboard, conductor and the innarRAB of the piano.

I thought the Manfred Symphony was magnificent in tonights TV concert together with the Rachmaninov No 2.

Not at all. Apparently the composer of "All By Myself" used the melody, being under the impression that it was in the public domain. It wasn't and royalties had to be paid to the Rachmaninov family.

Remember it dates from the Edwardian era, at the height of the British Empire.

Anyway, no reason to not aspire to make this country a land of hope & glory whatever the present reality might be. It is an uplifting piece of music & makes people feel good about this country :) which is a nice antidote to the constant depressing talk of 'Broken Britain' .

Have fun tomorrow!

It is definitely the one you're thinking of. This and Tchaikovsky's on Wednesday are my two favourite romantic violin concertos. The music to the Stella Artois ad to begin with tonight. Wonder how many Prommers will hum along...

It is planned to I think, although there was talk of a technician's strike that may black it out ... not sure if that strike is going ahead or has been resolved.
