i'm going to watch it tomorrw, but my dad rang me to tell me about it he was very moved by the whole thing, and I have to say he's a music buff in both opera and musical theatre genres
 
How strange that you like pre/early-Baroque and then jump straight to Stravinsky and Bartok?! It's like a sandwich with no tasty filling, just dry bread ;) The only Bartok I think I like is Bluebeard's Castle.
 
Try the Concerto for Orchestra or the Music for strings percussion and celesta - both fabulous stuff and compositionally tighter than a nuns bum.
But I'm singing in Brahms Requiem and Mahler 8 (groan) this year - do they count?
 
I thought it was all a bit flat this year, Land of Hope and Glory usualy makes the hairs on my neck stand up, I nearly nodded off tonight.
 
Have you heard The Alpine Symphony? It's my favourite Strauss tone poem and is just epic, closing with a colossal 20-minute farewell of absolute orchestral lushness!

Anyway, Heldenleben's not over yet!
 
The diversity of opinion is what's so great; everyone has their own idea of what works and what doesn't. I find Grieg dreary but can't listen to Poulenc enough. I know others who think the opposite. Personal taste varies so much. I don't think anyone apart from Alan has a qualified opinion. It's just something I've listened to on a regular basis from a young age but I have just as much love for almost every other musical genre.

Currently listening to Schubert's 8th by Neville Marriner and the Academy of St. Martin in the FielRAB. Pure harmony.
 
Oh. I would say that I must have just been wrong (I can easily believe that, I know nothing) but last night's Bach seemed to go down really well in the hall from what I heard - I could hear comments all round me about how amazing it had been, and how beautiful and powerful, and the general consensus on the way out that I heard was overwhelmingly positive.
