The price of a iPhone 3g?

I have been wanting to get a iPhone 3G, I was wondering if you can answer some of my questions. I currently have AT&T right now with a contract for another year and a half, I heard that in order to buy a iphone at $199 I need to start a new contract so does that mean I have to break my current contract? I also don't like all the fees I have to pay with the plan that comes with the iphone so would it be better to just buy one at places like ebay where people sell for $400-500?

And if I do buy it from ebay and whatnot, it would ask for activation right? That's one thing I don't understand is the whole activating thing for iphone, is it a protection so that people need to use their plan? Or is it something that will go away once I plug it to iTunes or something.
 
I have no idea why cell phone companies do that. All you have to do is buy the phone and change the sim card from the old phone to the new one. I don't have an iphone, but I'm assuming it works with a sim card. Usually, when you buy a new phone, you just add a year or two to your current contract.

The activation acts just like it would for an ipod. Just a security thing. So if someone steals it then it could be traced.
