The plastic that comes covering the lamp shade, use it or lose it?

Im a dude, and i dont know what the Judgement is from the "Fashion Police". I bought some new lamps, do i take the clear plastic on the lamp shade off? Seems to me it is acting like a cover! Or does this fall in the category of socks with sandles?
