The Phantom Menace was on ITV this Evening

Why did you find two children smiling at one another creepy?:confused:

The best thing about the ending of The Phantom Menace is the music, which is actually The Emperors Theme from Return of the Jedi, re-written and using childrens voices. On the surface its a really light and fluffy ending, but when you know whats really going on with Palpatine its actually a pretty dark ending.
 
Gungan fight probably was worthless, the Naboo space fight was better than no group space fight in the prequels. Sure it's nothing compared to ANH or ROTJ group space fights, but i thought there had to be at least 1 in the prequels.
 
I think the prequels suffer from not having had donkeys years of repeat showings to be hammered into our memories.

Perhaps in a similar time they will eventually be considered as good as the originals.



Apart from jar jar, who I didn't dislike, I just couldn't understand, I agree with that.

The manipulation by palpatine was the best bit for me too. That runs thru all 3 prequels.
 
There are many, many, things I dislike about TPM, yet the one thing always seems to annoy me most about it is Ewan McGgegor's hair/wig. It's just so wrong. One minute it looks perfectly normal, the next it looks a Tribble has landed on his head.
 
Actually its The Emperors Theme which is the creepy choral music from Return of the Jedi.

Anakin's Theme (which you can hear on and off throughout TPM and during the end credits) is a re-working of the Imperial March.

As far as the movies go, I apreciate that everyone is entitled to their opinion, but it just blows my mind that anybody can honestly think TPM is superior to the brilliant Revenge of the Sith!:eek::D
 
More than a third of the audience hated Phantom Menace though as the box office returns for Clones took a substantial hit before everyone got back on board for Anakin getting the crispy critter treatment in Sith.
 
I never even meant to get into a defence of the PT here and intended on basically staying out of this thread. Those days ended for me in 2005. I've got better things to do with my time these days.

So heres where I am on the PT.

1. TPM - Is a deply flawed movie. A movie I neither love or loath. I don't understand the hate for hate, because for me its a perfectly enjoyable, if forgettable 2 hours. Lucas could have done better.

2. AOTC - Is better than Episode I, but not amazing by any means. The love story is poor. However, theres a huge amount to enjoy. Better, but Star Wars still isn't firing on all cylinders.

3. ROTS - I love this film. My personal favourite of the Saga. Sad, tragic and full of pathos. It works for me on pretty much every level.

And I'm done here. Have fun.
 
Is it REALLY that bad? I know the press and media hyperbole at the time was that it was appalling, but there a several films, much, much worse than The Phantom Menace released every single summer without hardly any of the vitriol thrown over them that this film managed to attract.:rolleyes:
 
A lot of people built up this image in their minRAB of who Vader was. There was a mystery about him, which the Prequels took away. The same was true of Boba Fett. Of the Jedi Knights. Of The Emperor. When people saw these characters in the Originas they were able to let their imaginations explain how they got to be the characters they were. That was always the big risk of doing the Prequels, that the story Lucas created for these characters wouldn't gel with the ideas all the fans had.

The interesting thing is that future generations won't have all of this baggage. They will be able to take all six films and the overall story for what it is, without the expectations of youth to live up to. In 25-30 years it'll be interesting to see what people think of the intricate tapastry Lucas wove to make his Saga.
 
When I first saw Revenge of the Sith, I thought it was the best of the prequels. It hasn't held up to repeat viewings though. Anakin's fall is a great concept but poorly executed.
 
Does anyone know what the next three parts of the storyline are about?

I mean episode 7, 8 and 9?

I think Lucas has said that there will be no more films but he said that after 4, 5 and 6 too so........

But I'm sure I have heard that they are written.

So it would be the Jedis, Luke and Leia, and Han her husband and they will have Jedi children who are very powerfull.

But who will be the Sith now that Vadar and Sidious are dead?

Unless Sidious was'nt the real Sith leader of course???!!!

1. TPM - Is a deeply flawed movie. A movie I loathe and can completely understand the hate for, because for me its a clumsy, poorly conceived and badly executed kiRAB movie that drags on for over 2 hours. Lucas could have hardly done worse.

2. AOTC - Is better than Episode I but could hardly have been worse. The love story is poor, as is the rest of the writing, the pacing, the acting. However, there's an occasional thing to enjoy: John Williams' score has its moments, some of the effects are pretty. Another example of Lucas misfiring on all cylinders.

3. ROTS - I like this film. My personal favourite of the prequels but that's like comparing a smooth journey to a car crash (AOTC) or a train wreck (TPM). Sad, tragic that Lucas fluffed the key scene of Anakin becoming Vader and has Yoda skulking off at the end. Still, it works for me on a lot of levels and is better than ROTJ.

Well nothing can be as bad as Empire Strikes Back. I really dont get why so many people list this as their favourite. Nothing happens in it for a start.

A big battle on a nothing planet, one guy goes to a jungle to learn kung fu, the others go to a cloud city and get double crossed.

The end.

Really, it was 100% filler between two epic films.
 
Whilst I don't dislike the prequels, imo opinion the pacing is all off.

They should never have started with Anakin so young. It would have been much better to have had him as a young man at the start and show his fall to the darkside in more detail over the three films.

The prequels really skip so much. It all happens in Revenge of the Sith. We are suddenly told Anakin and Palpatine are good frienRAB, when it would have been more convincing to see their developing frienRABhip on screen.
 
Rumours have been floating around for decades but there are currently no plans to make episodes 7-9. George Lucas is concentrating on TV spinoRAB instead.
 
TPM remains one of the few films to go over the $400m mark at the US box office and globally earned over $900m. Not bad for a film thats hated by over a third of its audiance and suffered the terrible press backlash that it did.;)

Its interesting that actually the box office returns of the PT are very similar to how the OT played out.

Star Wars and The Phantom Menace were to two big earners.

Next comes Return of the Jedi and Revenge of the Sith.

With the two middle acts, Empire Strikes Back and Attack of the Clones coming last. Clones did earn marginally less than Empire, though when you take into account summer 2002 was a World Cup year and it had extremely strong competition from Spiderman, where-as Empire wouldn't have had any notable competition, I actually think the box office of Episode II and V is quite comparable.

What ypu have to keep in mind is that the PT was always up against MUCH bigger competition than the OT. Spiderman. Harry Potter. The Matrix. The Lord of the Rings. There were some huge films out there while the PT was having its run. With that much competition, I think all the PT films performed extremely well.
