Yes! See - that's really close to what I've read, too - and I have the exact same questions (which I know will be answered once I see the film, but I won't be able to see it until some time next week, at the earliest). This is what's concerning me - you hit the nail on the head.

Interesting side note - the Nation of Islam newspaper (the one that follows Louis Farrakhan) has come out in support of Mel Gibson's version, insinuating that they understand the persecution that Mel Gibson is currently feeling. Kind of fascinating, really (I picked up a copy of the newspaper at lunch today, out of curiosity).
 
Well I'm back from the screening. It ended just over an hour and a half ago and while I'm under strict embargo from Icon Productions, New Market Films and Equinoxe Films (Canadian Distributor). I can say that it was an amazing piece of cinema. One of the best movies I've seen in a long time.

I'm not a religious person at all and can't speak for the accuracy of the events depicted but I can say that as a film this is one crowning piece of work. Everything about it is amazing, cinematography, acting, musical score, imagery. I can't at this time think of a bad thing to say about it. It is graphically violent and I had to look away at times but I think it's an important piece of work and I can see the passion Mel had for it in every frame.

Full review will be posted upon it's completition. I wish I could post it now (it's not written) but my viewing the film meant I promised not to publish my review untill midnight on the 25th.

I saw this on Tuesday night with my friends and I was a wreck throughout it. It was like having all that I knew about the story magnified 100x, showing me little things that seemed almost insignificant before. The scene in the Garden of Gethsemane was alot more than just Jesus praying.
I cried mainly because I felt that I didn't deserve such a sacrifice, and I knew that I was taking His grace for granted. Jesus could have easily come down from that cross, but His purpose had to be fulfilled by taking on the weight of our sins. I just couldn't watch anyone be put through that kind of pain and had to look away for most of the movie.
Mel Gibson and his crew did an excellent job with this film. James Caviezel...WOW! I've seen many versions of this story, but I think this one breaks the rules and isn't afraid to offend anyone with the truth.

I have to agree that having merchandise available for this film defeats the purpose of the film, which is to spread the gospel. The movie itself has made enough money, and it seems dishonorable to have it be marketed like it's just another blockbuster.

Didn't think I could watch it twice, but I may have to.
 
i am very intrigued and fascinated about this movie coming out also, and am also thankful that an actor such as Mel Gibson found truth and is bringing it and showing it to the world. I am a religious person and this portrayal of Jesus Christ should be revealing and extremely fantastic of really how "it is as it was".

I read a review of the movie on the website of my church denomination. A few paragraphs troubled me; could someone who has seen the movie expand a little:



I don't know what to make of that; it honestly troubles me a little bit.

And I don't want to sound dumb, but in the movie how can you tell which peopel are Jews and which are Romans?
 
I am going to watch the interview. I want to hear what Mel has to say about filming the movie and all the controversy surrounding it.
 
i agree saw a clip on it this morning or yesterday on the today show-am going to see it next Tuesday night-so can give you all an update Wed if you want?
 
Well, I'm not interested in seeing this movie at all (I'm not Christian and just not interested), but I wanted to respond to the post above. Mel Gibson is one of the members of the church who rejects Vatican II, which is, in my mind, a big reason why all this talk of Anti-Semetism is circulating. Plus, I find that wing (the people who reject Vatican II) to be quite fanatical.
 
The movie comes out this week in New Zealand and I am hoping to catch it this week I think this movie has sparked a lot of good discussion here on this board and has given me a lot to think about and pray about over the next few nights...

No matter what happens with this movie or however much flack Mel Gibson has caught and will catch for it, I have the utmost respect for him for being true to his beliefs and bringing 'The Passion of The Christ' to life.

I think that is out of respect for his father. so he would not embarass him. He loves his father, we all know that, we have heard him say it so many times. and i like Mel for saying nothing.

I personally think its just out of respect. but hey, i could be wrong.
 
Gah, such a great movie. I think I'm going to be seeing again this weekend, I hope. I cried the whole entire movie and I had to look away at numerous scenes. I think I was quiet the rest of the night, I mean what do you say after a movie like that?

I don't know why they moved it (tonight), but they did.

Who is the actor playing Jesus - Jim Caveziel(sp)

I watched some previews of it and his acting is superb, I saw the preview where they were beating him with whips and his hand was shaking covered in blood, then it showed them driving the nail in his hand, I started crying, I mean just from that 2 minute preview, it was truely terryfying for me to see, I was covered in cold chills, I mean everyone knows the story and how it went, but man seeing it acted like that, it was brutal to watch... did anyone else see it?
 
Kibbles87 - I agree with you, and also hope that this movie opens people's eyes, rather than provoking them to close them.

Again, I haven't seen the movie, but I'm concerned by what I've read from people who have, as far as the difference between the portrayal of the Romans versus the portrayal of the Jews in the film. I'm very curious to see if their claims are true (and no, these weren't written by Jewish leaders, just general movie reviewers and critics). But from what I've heard, there is a difference, and I'm not sure what the reason would be behind that - it's a subtle thing and yet can cause a big discrepency about how one perceives a community. That's where my main concern lies, not the story itself.
 
Ms. Isabel - Yes, thank you for alerting us to that interview.

Shrrshrr - It's funny because religion is one of the two most forbidden topics (Religion and Politics) that American's don't allow them to speak about with people outside their own circle of friends in fear of offending someone else's beliefs (which is why Hollywood doesn't often take religious stances on things as not to alienate the potential moviegoer who = revenue in their pockets

But that's all changing now with what I said about the President Bush and what's going on and the general climate of the country if you've been keeping up on things (as I am sure many have).

Regardless, as far as the actual film "The Passion of the Christ" goes, I definitely want to see it for the sheer artistry alone, let alone any relgious or political implications and controversy it has.

I'm not a religious person per se... But I find the story of Jesus' last hours extremely facinating from a historical and philosophical POV because if you believe in God (or the Christiain doctorines that POTC is based on) it literally is the "missing link" between mankind and proving the exitence of God if you think about because (for those that aren't Christian), Christianity believes Jesus to have ascended from Heaven (via immaculate conception) as the human embodiment of the Son of God to free mankind from its sins and bring the world out of darkness (kind of like Neo in "The Matrix" as the Chosen One).

If the fact that Jesus WAS a real person and that POTC really happened... Then its almost confirming the existence of a higher power, something that mankind has sought proof of for decades.
 
I understand your concerns, but I think there is a clear difference between being historically accurate to what happened and attacking a community. I understand what happened in the Bible and I do not hate the Jewish community because of it. I don't deny that it happens, but the people who do commit hate crimes obviously don't have a full understanding of what happened and why. Hopefully this movie will give them a better understanding of why Jesus died and help them to stop blaming a particular group of people.

The intention of the movie was not to point the blame or show the downfall man. I think it was to show Jesus' sacrifice. In my opinion, the movie did a good job at following through with those intentions.

Unsilent Majority - as usual you've raised some intriguing points. I hadn't considered that about Hollywood, but in retrospect I think you're correct - the movie-making people have shied away, in general, from such topics, and when they do deal with this kind of religious subject matter it frequently (always?) generates tremendous controversy.
 
Thanks for the article, shrrshrr. And by the way, Diane Sawyer's interview with Mel Gibson is scheduled to air on Monday, February 16. I'm quite interested in seeing that ... and, of course, the film.
