The Passion of the Christ

I just saw the movie today for the first time with my mom and one of her girlfriends. And not only did they cry almost the entire time, but I covered my eyes almost the entire time; especially when they were beating Jesus with the whips and he was just lying down praying for it to be over.

I couldn't help but want to leave the theater when they put Jesus on the cross and started hammering nails into thim. I wasn't really sure if it was the nails that killed him right then and there but then when he was still talking, I allowed myself to watch the rest of the movie w/out covering my eyes in horror. (Well, except for when that bird pecked the guy's eyes out. That was a little too much for me.)

I think I reacted the way I did mostly because I knew that it was a true story. That was what effected me the most.

Saw the movie last night and I couldn't believe how touching the movie was. It was amazing! And I have to admit, I'm a Catholic who doesn't practice it wholeheartedly...it definitely opened up my eyes and made me think. All of us in the theater wouldn't even get up when the movie was over. We were all just in awe.



I wholeheartedly agree with you. For the most part, this was the reason why I was so touched...Jesus is a human being just like the rest of us who feels pain, sadness, and happiness. Mary was devoted to her son from the day his born 'til the day he died, just like any mother.

I liked how Gibson didn't preach that Jesus was this or that. He just really showed us the reality of how he would and did sacrifice his life for all of us. Sometimes we need to be reminded of that, I'm ashamed to say.

I don't think Mel has ever belittled the Holocaust. He just chooses not to comment on what his father believes or says.
 
I agree it was a moving experience... haha i'm listening to the soundtrack right now... I thought it was an awesome movie... I really loved it... I loved the flashbacks...i think i cried during most of those parts... they were really powerful... i esp loved how mel did satan... love the imagery... it was just a very visually-pleasing film... and i didn't think it was violent AT ALL! I think mel could've gone much further but chose not to... i mean i think i find "alias" much more violent... I don't know why...

Well... gosh. I can't even begin to comment on everything. But I did want to reply to a couple things I saw everyone talking about.

When I went to go see it, much like when others have said they went to see it, no one said a thing afterward. No one got up to leave right away. It was quite amazing, not something you're used to if you go to movies often.

I've heard other people say they cried alot through out the movie. Whereas I almost did, I was more numb to it all. I didn't cry at all during it, but that's 'cause I was just sitting there in shock.

There were also parts I couldn't watch. But I don't think it was because of the violence exactly. As a Christian, I think it was more emotional feelings then it was not being able to watch the blood.

I actually didn't hear anything about the baby being the antiChrist. I heard on the making of the movie thing they had on PAX that it was from a painting. And actually a lot of scenes were from paintings, they did research in mueseums for it.

I'm sure I'll come back later though to add more. Very good movie. Lots to say about it. I loved the native languages. That added so much to it.
 
as a christian female i really want to see this movie from the standpoint of visually knowing what christ sacrificed for me...it's one thing to read it in the bible and to know it but i think it will be even more powerful and moving to see it on screen...
 
My mom wants to see this but I'm really not into it.

A-I don't feel that religion and Hollywood should be related. Religion is too important to be cheapened like that. It belongs in the church, not up on screen.

finally saw it tonight. i guess most of the stuff has already been said but i think it really depends on the reasons that motivate you to go watch this movie. it is definitely not entertainment, but i don't think it was meant to entertain in the first place.
i'm a religious person. not fanatically religious. i have my own picture of jesus & god. i'm catholic, but i don't believe in the catholic church or the pope.

what i saw in this movie & what i took home is the cruelty of mankind. i saw a person suffering - beyond words. yes, it was brutal. it was an honest image/picture of what it is like flogging someone and enjoying it. it shows mob & what people are like when they are part of a mob & what power the mob has.
i didn't watch it & think: damn the jews! i don't think it was about the jews in the first place. it was about mankind. if jesus had lived in italy or spain, the italians or spanish would have done this. i really don't understand the entire anti-semitism debate. it was about mankind & how cruel they can be.
i didn't see "my jesus" for a long time. in the end, when they show him in the wine & bread scene - i finally was able to see my jesus & it gave the movie a different perspective, in my opinion.

it was a very moving experience for me. and a very personal one, too.
 
a few things i noticed about satan in this movie. while satan was tempting jesus in the garden,jesus put an end to the tempting by stepping on satan's snake. this is a reference to the desendent of eve crushing the snake (genesis 3:15). the evil baby that satan was carrying could have been a reference to the future antichrist. the final scene with satan showed him screaming because he realized that he was going to lose the hold he had held on humanity ever since adam and eve chose to believe him instead of god.
 
You don't sound dumb at all. I was wondering that myself before I saw it, but the Jews and the Romans are dressed in different styles, so you should be able to tell which are which.

In regards to the review you posted, I did not view the Jews as being evil. And I disagree with the statement that the lasting image is the Jews' relentless pursuit. For me personally, it is the amazing sacrifice that Jesus made, all the horrors that he endured for us, and his compassion to still pray for his tormentors even as they crucified him that has lingered.

tsiam, thanks so much for pointing out the possible evil baby/antichrist connection. I didn't quite understand that point, but now it makes sense!

If you mean awesome in that it leaves you in awe, then yes. Intense, emotional, powerful, those all work too. For those of you who are not Christians, I'd have to say that I have no idea what it would be like to see it in that perspective, unless you wanted to focus on the cinematography. I didn't see it in any way as anti-Semitic. Honestly though, there really aren't words to describe how you walk away feeling.
 
I heard that it was Satan mocking Mary. He was like, "Look, I have a baby too." Same with when Satan was mirroring Mary when Jesus was carrying the cross then disappeared.
 
Wow it was very powerful to me. I cried silently at many parts, especially when they nailed his hands to the cross. Wow.

It was NOT anti-semitic at all! Frankly, that is a bunch of bull.
 
It's one thing to read the story of what Jesus went through in the Bible, but it's something totally different to see it carried out in front of your eyes. I saw it Thursday and I still can't stop talking about it!

My mom and stepdad are planning to see it, and I may go back to watch it with them.
 
Someone mentioned the evil baby thing that Satan was holding towards the end. Everyone I know, along with myself, are wondering what that was about. I have read alot of articles over the past few months going into this movie, and nothing has really explained that or even mentioned it. Does anyone know what it means? Is it from a painting? Is there anything behind it?
 
At first I was unsure if I wanted to see this film because of the violence. But I am glad that I did b/c I got to see what Christ went through to save us.
It's one thing to read it in the bible, to hear the passages in church, and to know the history, but it was more powerful and moving to see it on screen. I cried alot and at some scenes I had to watch through my fingers or close my eyes.
