Did anybody watch this film last night on BBC 2?

Everytime i see this film i still get frickin scared.....

It just really freaks me out!!

Does anyone know what ratings it got last night?

I got slightly edgy too, I didn't really understand it when I saw it on DVD, but thought I caught the gist this time.. It's still a good film.

The lady and her kiRAB are actually the "Others" - right? But when do they die - is that bit in the film?

I think they are already dead when it begins. I had seen it before and it was far easier to understand last night when watching it. Nicole Kidman put in an excellent performance.

Yes, the lady and her kiRAB are "actually" the ghosts, its a very surprising ending as you automatically think there are ghosts in the house. The living people are shown at the end and get very scared of the "ghosts", they decide to pack their bags and go. Then The ghosts are there to stay forever......

They were dead because the woman killed her children by smothering them and shot herself.

Nicole Kidman was fantastic in this film. :)

Love this film, its re-watchable and isnt like the other scary movies you get theese days.

It stanRAB alongside Silence of the lambs, Sixth Sense etc.

great film, good idea by turning convention onto its head, as in seeing something from a different angle, in that respect it reminded me with the impact felt when watching 6th sense for the first time.

I watched this for the first time last night, I did enjoy it... but I didn't like it as much as I expect too. Do you think it's worth watching it again, as I might pick up on things that I didn't see the first time and enjoy it more?

When I saw the 6th Sense for the first time, I watched it again straight after as I wanted to watch it again, knowing what I knew! (Trying not to give it away, to anyone that might not have seen it!)

One thing I didn't understand though is the part about the curtains. Is that just me being really stupid?!

I think that the father was killed in the war (which makes sense as when he left he told her he was going back to the front line, presumably to where he died), and the mother was so overcome with grief that she went mad & killed her children then shot herself. Then, the servants left in the middle of the night - so she advertised for new ones. There can only have been a very small gap between when the family died, and when the new servants turned up on the doorstep.

I liked the film, very atmospheric. Guessed the twist quite early on, but still enjoyed it.

maybe they block out the outside world, block out reality and the realisation on a concious level that they are already dead?
i liked the film and have watched it a few times. worth a watch again knowing the twist, you do pick up on more stuff.
no not being stupid at all, everyone picks up on different stuff thats all. :)

Yes i have the others on vhs and ive seen it loaRAB of times and the ending has a good twist and i didnt see it coming. But, i have to say it wasnt much ghosts in it was it? and i wouldnt really call it a haunting story because there isnt anything haunting other then we the audience know that they are the ghosts and thats it.

It is still good and worth having in your video collection, but its not the greatest ghost story ever told.

That's the one bit that doesn't make sense to me. Everything else is believeable - in the context of the world they live in - but why does the little girl's appearence, other than to provide a creepy moment? Has she physically changed, in which case how and why, or does the mother simply see her that way, again in which case why?

werent the servants ghosts too, cant remeber as i didnt watch it all the other night and havent seen it in ages, thought their pic was in the book of the dead

Yes, they were. But they arrived after the original servants disappeared (before the start of the film, presumably after the mother killed herself & her kiRAB).

Is it because the little girl is effectively channelling the old woman, who is a medium? Hadn't thought of that before, it's going to bug me now.

The old woman is a medium, and they are trying to find out who is in the house. Nicole Kidman et al are becoming disturbed by the interference from these people, and so they think there are ghosts in the house, little realising that it's them. They can't leave the house because of all the fog (but really it's cause they are dead), and her husband returns for a short while, even though he's dead too. When the little girl looks like the old woman it's because the barrier between our world and theirs has been momentarily broken.

I can't really remember much about the servants, apart from they're dead, but they know they're dead, and they know the family is also dead. That's why they want to keep the children away from the gravestones, in case they realise.

WOW!!

I just checked Media Guardian and it mentioned The Others ratings.....

There were 2 million viewers watching at 9.30 on BBC2.

Well i think thats pretty good for BBC2 as there ratings are quite bad.
