The Oscar should've gone to...

These are the ones in just the last 10 years that still get to me...

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon or Traffic should have won over Gladiator. I personally think that movie is highly overrated. Also that year, I think that Ellen Burstyn should have for Requiem for a Dream. I mean, yeah, Julia Roberts is a great actress but Ellen Burstyn was AMAZING in that movie!!!!!

I think that Clive Owen and Natalie Portman should have both won Supporting for their performances in Closer.

I think that Heath Ledger (or Joaquin), Jake Gyllenhaal and Michelle Williams should have won for their work in Brokeback Mountain. They were all heartbreakingly brilliant in that film.

Forest Whitaker shouldn't have been in the Lead Actor category for The Last King of Scotland because...HE WAS A SUPPORTING ROLE!!!!! That still pisses me off. Ryan Gosling should have won for Half Nelson.

And don't even get me started on Jennifer Hudson  And Helen Mirren...yes, brilliant actress but that Oscar should have gone to either Kate Winslet for Little Children or Judi Dench for Notes on a Scandal.

Amy Ryan should have won for Gone Baby, Gone over Tilda Swinton

Great Choices Blondie! I agree with all of those. Except, I loved Capote, and Philip Seymour Hoffman did a great job in the role, but it should have gone to Joaquin.

I have ot say that I'm moderately apalled that Princess Bride is not up there....or Life As A House...or Man in The Moon- I've never seen a film that made me feel so much....

Adrien Brody won Best Actor for this movie so The Pianist was recognized greatly even though it didn't win Best Picture. This is a wonderful movie and could have easily won.

:look: GWTW won 10 academy awards, including best picture.

I liked ET...but I didn't think that it was oscar-worthy..

Raiders of the Lost Ark, on the other hand....

I also think Mystic River should have won over Lord of the Rings---but I definitely get why Lord won. So I can't really fault the Academy on that (and I've never even seen Lord of the Rings). I'm just thankful they didn't award each separate film the Best Picture award...they were at least decent enough to wait until the third and award it basically as a whole.

I just wanted to say this list came from a poll. It was not put together by critics or movie buffs.

I posted this because I wanted to see your own choices with the list as a starting point :)

I feel these Actor's were ROBBED..

Edward Norton - American History X. (Lead)
Joaquin Phoenix - Walk The Line - (Lead) Capote Sucked.
Kate Winslet - Titanic (Lead)
Edward Norton - Primal Fear (Supporting)

Wasn't Nominated, but should have been..

Leonardo Dicaprio - Titanic (Lead)
Dwight Yoakam - Sling Blade (Supporting)
Doug Hutchison - The Green Mile (Supporting)
Michael Jeter - The Green Mile (Supporting)

I'm sorry but I could not stand Forrest Gump. I do not understand the appeal...maybe the soundtrack? It was, in my opinion, completely overrated. Oh yeah, and Tom Hanks? Admittedly, I'm not a fan but he would get nominated for reading the phone book. Shawshank Redemption was far superior in my opinion and the performances were great. I took forever to see Shawshank because the promos for it did not do it justice. Pulp Fiction was great but several of the performances were not that strong and the film just isn't typical Oscar material - I guess you could say it doesn't appeal to the masses.

E.T. - as a kid, I loved it. Watching it a couple of years later I just could not figure out what I had liked about it. Did anyone else have that experience?

What about the movie "The Pianist". It is an truly amazing, breathtaking, movie about a young man, whose whole life is torn apart, during the Holocaust, and then having to live on the run and find the will to survive and the strength to survive when he had nothing to live for. When I saw this movie, I was beyond amazed by it. Then I found out it was nomiated for Best Picture, but I believe Chicago won instead. Though I have never seen Chicago, so I can't say anything about that movie. All I know, is that the Pianist is a movie that will stick with me for the rest of my life.

As far as Forrest Gump goes... I love that movie and thought it was brilliant, so I agree with the Oscar win.

I was disappointed, however, that Saving Private Ryan didn't do as well. I thought that was an excellent movie that truly captivated what war is like and I was surprised when it didn't win.

I also think that E.T. should've won best picture. I mean, c'mon, everybody knows who that lovable little alien is. That movie (imo) is full of heart, and it really captured human emotions, while mixing in sci-fi, adventure, the whole nine yards.

And, admittedly, I was really pissed when Moulin Rouge didn't win. Especially since Chicago won afterwards. And while I love Chicago, MR is by far a better story, and a better musical.

And, I'm sure that there's a bunch of other movies that I'm missing, heh, but I'll think of them later. But, for other category's, I honestly can't believe that they didn't even NOMINATE Leonardo DiCaprio for Titanic. I mean, seriously, without him the movie wouldn't have been nearly as good. Nobody else could've done 'Jack' like he did, and I think that a big part of the movie's success was because of his performance. And, if you really think about it, who can honestly REMEMBER (looking it up on the internet doesn't count) who won the Male Performance category that year? Not very many, but I can guarantee you that everybody can remember who was the lead in Titanic.

Leonardo DiCaprio should have been nominated for Titanic. That was a travesty. The best film of all time and not even a nomination. That's a disgrace.

I agree that Shawshank should have won Best Picture. It is one of the best films ever. A lot of people don't know that Stephen King wrote it.

I sometimes find it hard to figure out who's deserving to win because not all the movies nominated are released on DVD come Oscar time, so I vote based on what I've seen.

I couldn't agree more. He was robbed for his portrayal of Johnny Cash. He was Johnny Cash in Walk the Line. Whenever I watch that movie, I'm bitter becasue of Joaquin being robbed of the Oscar. :(

ITA with this too. She was good as June Carter, but I think Joaquin Phoenix should've have won the Oscar much more over Reese Witherspoon actually winning it.

As for Leonardo Dicaprio, he's been robbed too many times now. It seriously pisses me off! It's so wrong how he was the main thing shutout of the Titanic awards - he was the friggin' male lead after all, and was amazing! He should've been nominated for The Basketball Diaries and Marvin's Room. As for his actual nominations, he was completely robbed for The Aviator. For the duration of that movie, he is Howard Hughes! I'm still so pissed off about this loss!

Some others for me...

Sean Penn for I Am Sam. I've never seen anyone portray someone like that the way Sean Penn did. He was effin' PHENOMENAL, and was completely robbed of the Oscar! Whenever I watch his performance, I get shiver-me-timbers. He's one of the greatest actors ever! And I'm so upset he didn't win for this movie. :(

Tom Hanks for The Green Mile. I think he pwned the hell out of that movie and I feel he should've won his third Academy Award for it. :irked:

Mystic River for 'Best Picture' - I know it was up against the final LOTR movie, but I still think it should've won, along with Clint Eastwood for 'Best Director.' [I'm so glad Sean Penn and Tim Robbins DID win though. More than deserving, imho!]

I could comment on the others, but this is as good an example as any - this just goes to show you how ridiculous the Oscars can be. Forest Gump? The film that told people it was okay to be stupid. Which is why I don't watch the Oscars anymore. Sure, it was very clever but the story annoyed the hell out of me and I thought it was directed in such a manipulative and intentionally sappy way that I could have hurled at several points in the film.

Still, I can't fault the acting (although I don't care for what's-her-name all that much...Robin Wright Penn? She was good in soaps and The Princess Bride, but...)

But your point about some of the other films being up against giants is also true - some of those films are incredible and well deserved the distinction.

Oh, and I loved Chariots of Fire! :)

WORD, yo! :D

It's been said already in this thread but I will saw it again...

Brokeback Mountain should have won over Crash. I will never forgive the academy for that. Never.

Ugh, I hated The Emperor's Club. I love Saving Private Ryan, though. That's a movie that should have definitely won.

Last year I really wanted Lost in Translation to win. I love that movie. And I hate the LOTR trilogy, which I feel is highly overrated. I was very disappointed last year when it sweeped pretty much EVERY category.

I also think Memento and Mulholland Drive are two amazing movies that went completely unrecognized. They should have at least been nominated for Best Picture. I can't believe Naomi Watts wasn't even nominated for Best Actress.

Don Cheadle should have won for Hotel Rwanda over Jamie Foxx---I still get chills thinking about his performance.

Leonardo should have won for What's Eating Gilbert Grape over Tommy Lee Jones in the Fugitive

Nicole Kidman in MR should have won over Halle Berry in MB (though Halle was my second favorite of the year).
