The Oscar Nominees for Best Animated Film of 2007 Are...

"Persepolis" (Sony Pictures Classics): Marjane Satrapi and Vincent Paronnaud
"Ratatouille" (Walt Disney): Brad Bird
"Surf's Up" (Sony Pictures Releasing): Ash Brannon and Chris Buck

Surprised to see Surf's Up nominated instead of The Simpsons Movie. Of course, two things I do consider when it comes to this surprise nomination:

1. Surf's Up did have a unique concept of being an animated "mockumentary";
2. The Simpsons Movie is basically a 90-minute "Jerkass Homer" episode (with a few other "done to death" Simpsons plot bits thrown in).

If hearing about Juno for Best Picture was unbelievable, Surf's Up being nominated is too much. The Simpsons Movie was alright, but why couldn't this movie get in. To me, I knew nothing of Persepolis until after reading about it here.

This is pretty much a blow to one of the last 2-D movies we will ever see. $5 says that Disney's next 2-D film will get snubbed for next year for appreciation to Pixar's Wall-E. Hope that Ratotouille(sp?) will gain an Oscar after Pixar was snubbed last year because of the underperfomance of Disney-Pixar's Cars.

Okay,
  1. Surf's Up should get nominated for it's technical achievement and it's interesting method of storytelling, which practically saved this movie from being another run-of-the-mill animated movie.
  2. Disney's next 2D film comes out next year, while Wall-E comes out this year. They will not be competing together in the next Academy Awards.
  3. Cars was snubbed for a good reason, because Happy Feet was a BETTER movie.

Inconceivable! I was sure that the category was going to turn out like this:

Bee Movie
Ratatouille
The Simpsons Movie

In fact, I'd have put even money on it.

I really wanted Meet the Robinsons to be nominated, as it WAS the best animated movie of 2007. Oh well, two of my predictions made it.

Here's hoping Surf's Up wins.

What the heck? The Simpsons Movie didn't get nominated  ?
What a rip off.
And why only 3 movies? I believe there were more than 3 animated movies released this year.

Surfs up...surfs up...surfs up... surfs up... Why in hell did it have to be surf's up? Wow. Surf's up.... I mean, wow.

Well, at least Rat and Persy have no competition except between each other.

Still... if Aqua Teen hunger Force was nominated, it would be a huge slap in the face of the Boston mayor...

I'm adjusting the title of the thread to cover all the animation-related Oscar nominees (check out Toon Zone News' coverage here).

Surf's Up
over The Simpsons Movie, huh? OK, well, just goes to show what awards are really worth, I guess.

Personally, I think the much bigger news is that Ratatouille landed a nomination for "Best Original Screenplay." I'm not quite sure that I agree with it, since the film does have a few lumps in it still, but it's nice for it to be recognized in a traditional film category anyway.

IMO, they might as well just give the Best Animated Feature to Persepolis now. After all the press about it (and the fact that it'll stick a thumb in Iran's eye), I can't see how it's NOT going to win. I'd love to watch Persepolis, if only Sony would release it in more theaters :p.

The conspiracy theorist in me says that it ended up there because Persepolis is going to win the Best Animated Feature after getting snubbed for Best Foreign Film (and now Best Picture as well), and they want to give the rat an award in a non-technical category.

I can see Persepolis winning mainly because the Academy might not want to give Brad Bird another award so soon.

As for Surf's Up... I have no idea what it's doing there.

Outside of in 2006, there's always a WTF? nomination (i.e. Jimmy Newtron, Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron, Brother Bear, Shark Tale, arguably Monster House).
