the old family guy episodes vs the newer episodes

all family guy episodes are funny,I laugh more at the newer episodes. why do people find the older episodes funnier? also, alot of people here hate herbert. I belly laughed when he sang in blue harvest. my sister nearly peed herself when he did that. herbert is comedy gold.

There is definitely a difference between the "old" episodes and the "new" episodes. Me personally, I enjoy both, though I do lean a little more towards the older ones. I like the old episodes because they could be zany but still have some heart to them, whereas the newer episodes mostly seem to be more concerned with being as whacked out as possible, and a little too mean-spirited from time to time. Though I like many of the newer episodes as well.

I liked Herbert early on when he only showed up occasionally, but he's gotten pretty overused in the "new" episodes, so I don't like him as much as I used to. His role as Obi-Wan is the first time I've really liked him in a long time.

i think family guy is awesome old or new. It's just one of those classic weird family cartoons. I personally prefer Family Guy over Simpsons any day!

I can't stand Family Guy, especially the newer episodes. Why? Because every episode of Family Guy is like this-

-Something stupid happens
-Peter says, 'hey, lois, remember when I-' or 'this is just like the time that I-'
-An obscure pop culture star and Peter dance/sing/fight/act out a scene
-Something stupid happens
-Stewie says something harsh and unfunny.
-Something stupid happens
-Someone is pedophilic and rapey.
-Brian or Stewie makes a joke that would be funny if they didn't extend it for too long.
-Something stupid happens
-Sex, drugs, and alcohol are thrown in for no reason
-lolMegsucks
-Something stupid happens
-Random appearance of a celebrity or a character from FG or some other show.

That is not amusing. =\

Some of the older episodes of Family Guy aren't that bad. Some even have a few great jokes, I'll give them that. But nowadays? It's utter crap, in my opinion. Yes, I know a lot of you love the show, so you're going to see me as the enemy. But I just can't take the poor humor, lack of a decent (OR EVEN ANY) plot, stupid character, unnecessary references, and intolerable existence of the show.

/endrant.

Carry on.

Posts like that are very annoying. You can make any show look bad by taking the worst aspects of it (or the things you don't like) and saying that's ALL the show consists of. I still remember when Matt Wilson said Duckman sucks because every line is Duckman commenting about breasts. Which is not only a complete exaggeration but neglects to mention other types of humor in that show.

Don't get me wrong, I don't think Family Guy is as strong as it used to be. But just from the tone of your post, I feel like you're just using this thread as an excuse to bash Family Guy because it's not your type of humor.

Okay, I don't like the hostility in your post, so if you could curb that a bit, that'd be awesome.

Now then, I didn't take all the worst aspects. I summed up what I normally see in an episode. Tons of my friends watch the show, my household loves the show- so I've seen nearly every episode. And I am not 'using this thread as an excuse to bash Family Guy,' I was stating my opinion. That's kind of what message boards are for. I didn't just bash the show, I even stated that it has it's moments. And hell, I love American Dad. I just cannot stand Family Guy, and instead of just saying, 'lol, it sucks,' I expanded on it.

And dun compare me to Matt Wilson. >< I may be picky, but I'm not pretentious. =P

Let me put it this way: It'd be like me going into a Naruto thread which, say, consists of people discussing whether the filler episodes are good or bad, and proclaiming "I hate Naruto" (overall). Even if I list legitimate reasons, such a post is out of place in the thread because the thread is not for debating the show as a whole, but a specific topic pertaining to the show. Same goes for this thread- it's old episodes vs. new episodes, not "Do you like Family Guy or hate it?"

Being compared to Matt Wilson isn't really a bad thing IMO. He was awesome.

But yeah... I don't know, I think most people are just getting fatigue from the fact that every episode of the show has the same formula. I haven't seen that many of the newer episodes, but they're okay when you don't watch them very often. Some of the jokes (i.e. all of the ones where the characters juts stand there and rant about stuff for no reason) go on way too long, but the show's not that bad, even in the newer ones. The old ones just happen to be better, as they have less cutaways, and the ones they DID have were less forced.

Gotta agree with Speedy on this one, Kury. That post kind of seemed uncalled for, IMHO.

But lets get back to the actual topic. It's silly when regular members go back and forth like this. It's ridiculous when mods/admins/reports/etc do it.

I love the older Family Guy episodes and I'll admit they're quite different from the newer seasons. But years of constant play on [as] (as well as on DVD) have made me tired of the first three or so seasons. I look forward to new Family Guy every Sunday, despite the changes in the show's humor and/or tone. The show still appeals to me in it's current form, regardless of how much I appreciate the older episodes.

The Simpsons on the other hand...

Personally, yeah, they go overboard with the pop culture refferences, but that's what I like. When they replaced it with nonsequitor cutaways (like that Peter owning a rat farm bit) and then long conversations that go nowhere-which are fine in small doses. 2 episodes ago, it was the entire episode.

And from the previous post- that is what family guy is and always has been.

Personally, I'll take Herbert to Cletus or Sideshow Mel anyday. you want to talk about over used...

But yeah, American Dad is a superior show.

The first three seasons actually attempted to construct logically flowing plots and believable characters, while maintaining strong humor that pushed the envelope further than most other shows dared to. That was its niche in entertainment history at that point - an edgy parody of typical sitcom fare that still held its own as a legitimate TV show.

For whatever reason, Season 4 and onwards has seen the show turn into an outrageously overblown parody of itself that fails to maintain the sense of humor that the first three seasons had. The main purpose of the show is not to satirize pop culture, but to see how much the writers can get away with - pointless vulgarity, brazen offensiveness, exaggerations of the characters' most overhyped personality traits, and scenes that last three minutes with no payoff and no connection to the rest of the episode. Nowadays on "Family Guy", plots don't unfold and characters don't develop and humor doesn't connect - it's just a lot of stuff that happens.

My tidbits on this subject

- People that started to watch this show BEFORE it got canceled, like the old eps better
- People that started to watch this show AFTER it got canceled, like the new eps better
- Herbet is now a main character, get used to him
- Meg is now only on this show SPECIFICALLY for bashing, unlike earlier seasons where the bashing was much more subtle and casual
- The writing was tighter in the old episodes and the old episodes seem more grounded, these days the show seems out there and all over the place during episodes
- IMO, the voice acting is also better in the later seasons compared to the earlier seasons
- Bonnie is still pregnant :D
