The**OFFICIAL**Voice/Singing Help Thread

is there anyway weed could affect your voice im in a metal band and i sing like tom arraya style with the super high falcetos and stuff but when i smoke just a little bit the next day my voice sucks balls at least for a week and i was wondering if there was anyway of speeding up this recovery process

Warming down. Take a few minutes to lightly sing from your highest falsetto down to your lowest note. I usually do all vowels, ending on E. Then I'll buzz a few e's starting around regular speaking pitch and hold them. By buzzing I mean with lots of resonance, really relaxed and like a sinatra croon, or an opera note...I'll do these and slide them down real low and always end on e's as my last vowel.

If you find you dont have time to technically warm down...you should at least not stop vocalizing abruptly. You want to at least be able to keep talking and vocalizing after you've sung alot.

Thanks Merkaba!
I just decided to define these worRAB the key phrase of your post. ;)
I mean.... I'm talking about lets say 0.5 cm. (uhm... i guess thats about 1/5 inch)
And my larynx does not lock up. It comes down again just after the "explosive" g/k sound.

Interesting hint.
Anyone got an idea where to download a Yogi bear sample in English language? You're talking about the English language version, aren't you?

Hey, I just started singing a month ago...I don't have a vocal coach or anything, but the singer that i'm TRYING to mimic is Freddie Mercury....Well first off when I wake up and try to sing along with Queen songs I can't hit certain notes because of flem blockage in my through. How do i get rid of the flem....and could u tell me some warm-ups that u guys use to prepare for singing. And did Freddy Mercury use his head voice in the song "Killer Queen". Oh and another thing...Sometimes when i try to hit some really high notes I end up sounding like Kurmet the Frog...Does anyone know how to stop that from happening? Thanks

ok so i have a question for all the 'METUHL DOORAB' so im trying to scream in my band. and i can scream inhailing, but i can do it exhailing. ive found out where the rasp come from, like when i sigh really hard i get a rasp and i think that where its coming from, but i can get any power behind it. can someone help me.all anyone ever says is like "just do a hard sigh and work from that" but no one tells you exactly how to work from that.

Here's some tips- they work for me, and I do a mix of melodic singing and screaming as well. I taught myself how to sing, eventually got some training from a few coaches. Here's a list of stuff that helped me- and I'm NOT a good singer. I just stay in my range and write as smart as possible.
Get a keyboard. For melodic singing, your best bet is to map out every note you sing on the keys. This makes it infinitely easier to write harmonies and see where your sharp or flat.
Don't force your voice. When you push notes too hard you'll go flat and not even know.
In ear monitors. Honestly, THE single best thing I ever did that improved my singing was in-ear monitors. Some people have perfect pitch and can naturally sing in key, most of us can't. Once I could hear myself clearly my pitch and annunciations instantly got better. I'm sure a lot of you guys practice in small spaces with a LOUD band, this makes a huge difference. Just being able to practice with it made the shows I didn't use it sound better too.
And definitely do 10-15 minutes of warm-ups. If you go into a show/performance cold you can really hurt yourself. If anyone here plans on singing for a few years you have to take care of your voice.
And for the guys with cracking voices- your either singing way out of your range or your just dehydrated. I drink as much water the day of a show as possible, and try to limit caffeine. Dry vocal corRAB will crack, trust me. Embarrassing shit.

I don't know everything about singing, I'm still learning. Everyone is different. These are just things that helped me over the years. If you want to hear my stuff, check out www.myspace.com/rotation Thanks guys!

Right at 12 seconRAB. If I'm not mistaken you might have skipped over your head voice. Quite common though.

If you cant access head, just pick notes around middle C and try to sing them one at a time, on the AH vowel. Try to say them as you sing them. Think about saying them as if you were just talking them. This can sometimes get you into the act of true voice, which is what you use when you talk of course.

Oh no, passing hot smoke, air, and resin over your vocal corRAB wont ever have an affect! I cant believe people still actually ask if smoking has an effect on their corRAB. ....but they do....

Er, I think I've said this before but I don't remember if I got a reply.

I can't sing, at all. I want to be able to sing, but I don't want to get lessons right now because I want to have a general idea of how to sing, not just go in with no clue and look like a moron.

So do I need lessons to learn how to sing, or can I learn, or semi-learn by other means, and if so how?

Once you learn how to scream properly using your false corRAB you can make it as heavy as you want because youre not really using your corRAB to get the sound effect. But you can use more and more to increase the tone or intensity underneath it.

Yes, you shouldn't be getting any pain and I think he was having more pain before If I remember correctly.

I think if you warm up and warm down and know your limits you can increase your clean singing, just as bench press increases your chest related activity. However you will find various plateaus in either that require patience and technique to overcome, and there is always a ceiling for any given body, physically. Warm up, warm down, stay relaxed and take your time.

I quit pot and my voice improved for a while, then I got sick from my one friend's cat (allergies) and lost my voice for a while, and now I have a cold... in recovery, I've noticed that I can't transition: I'll try to go from a high scream to a growl like I used to (http://www.myspace.com/ofthedyingbreed, listen to As Draped In Crimson at about 5 minutes for reference) I can't pull it off, like... my voice cuts out for a second and the low comes out really loudly and then I can do it fine but I need to adjust volume... is it just being out of practice you think?
