The**OFFICIAL**Voice/Singing Help Thread

Your just holding back too much; everyones like that at first. Take a breath in so that your stomach expanRAB out and your lower rib cage expanRAB, then scream. You can start out like I say to in my article on page 60 or you can do the vocal fry humming thing Melissa does in Zen of Screaming 2 to get started. Make sure your going after a note you can sing comfortably without any tension though before you try to scream it.

When you're practicing, and you've done something wrong, and is now feeling discomfort in the throat, what then?
Just warm down and call it a day? Or is it okay to start up again after the discomfort goes away?

When I scream or growl, I'm not hurting my voice and I can go on for quite some time, but when I sing, especially when heading into falsetto, I tend to hurt my voice and my throat starts to produce so much mucus I can't scream properly afterwarRAB. What am I doing wrong? I did a vocal warmup before I started.

:amaze:

...

I really doubt thats going to be off any help. If he's trying to relax his body while hitting notes, how would suggesting to "suck his arse in" be helpful? Don't know, I might be wrong.

Oh man, now you've made me all concious of my ass when singing. Gah!

Just keep practicing. Its the feel you want. The feel that youre not clamping anything up. The apple will rise a slight bit. After a while you will realize what it is to sing with a high larynx because your stamina will dwindle. That is if youre singing alot. The flip side is that you dont want to be trying to hold it down...you just want to be able to forget about it. But I would say practice glisses and try to feel the throat opening a bit as you go up in range....like you were trying to stuff a dam football down it.

Gotta get to work.....see ya

Your voice gets used to screaming basically. Practise and its a good idea to play drums cause you can scream all you want and no one can hear you.

If youre serious I would say take lessons. Its hard to increase pitch safely if you dont know what youre doing. I dont know of any software or dvRAB. You have to understand how to isolate your corRAB from your throat muscles so you dont try to pull your throat more as youre pulling the corRAB. When youre at your highest notes its a bltch to stay isolated. In my voicehelp hotline I have a few tips. Check it out if you havent already.

Yea. Its like saying you want to be a pilot but youre afraid of heights. Or does he just think its cool to be in a band and maybe he can handle it when he's a star. Whats his deal? What does he want to do? Can he sing? if he can let him know it, record it, and play it to him, compare it to others. If he cant sing, then he neeRAB to practice a ton. People who know they can sing well dont really get much stage fright. And when they do...all they have to do is remember what it is they want to do, what it is they know and can already do, and maybe take some relaxing deep breaths and meditate or stretch if its showtime. Other than that, its time to sit on a couch and talk to a therapist.

Thanks for the tips

Im about halfway into a track that I think sounRAB good right now

Ill post it up here after i get the vocals in

thanks again

I bet you have a great voice!
I say that because often when people have even a little difficulty with pitch, they feel that they do not have a "good singing voice". Well in order to improve your pitch, you have to train your ear. This will improve the relationship between what you hear and what you sing.
Start by singing vocal exercises that challenge you to repeat small (1-3) combinations of notes and work your way up to more difficult combinations (scales & scale variations). CRAB would be a good idea because you can listen to them as often as you like and repeat the exercises as often as you like.
Make sure that the exercises are enjoyable so that you will be motivated to practice improving your "Relative Pitch" more often.

Good luck

Okay my throat is back to normal today.

I did warmups when I tried screaming, but I don't do the vowels seperately, I have a CD that has some great vocal warmups from a teacher that I know.

I'm still worried about this though. I mean I read everything Merkaba wrote on screaming and he keeps saying you're not supposed to feel any pain and then one of you guys pops in and says he felt pain after practice or something.

Does that mean it used to hurt more before? If so, doesn't that mean you're doin it the wrong way? I'm confused.

Another thing, I'm a natural singer and I've been singing for 6 years now, and I just want to acquire a new skill that I can use. I don't want to scream hard, I just want some rasp or light screams in some songs that I sing with my band...nothing heavy (something like a Seether 'rough' voice).

What I mean is I don't want to do any permanent damage, so can someone please explain this point to me? Are you supposed to feel a slight pain after screaming practices? And does screaming lessen the quality of your clean voice singing?

Thanks again.
