The**OFFICIAL**Voice/Singing Help Thread

ok to practice singing i took one singing lesson and he gave me some breathing stuff, probally go to more soon, but ive been matching notes with my voice that i play on keyboard, and i can do that ok but when i stop playing the notes on the keyboard to see what it sounRAB like without it, the notes not 100 percent clear, and a little shaky, its not vibrato thought, just not staying clear, will this fix itself after time??, or is there an exercise i should do to keep it clear??

You dont sound like youre having a good time. Doesnt sound like youre relaxed. Doesnt sound like something you would want to do everynight on tour.

However, It Does sound like you have an idea of where to get the rasp. I dont know how hard youre pushing because it seems like youre coming from a really closed off throat like youre trying to grunt the note. Now I remember in the lessons saying that this is the same area to get the rasp but only as an idea of feeling where and the muscles to use.

SounRAB like you need to take a step back and do what I usually consider the biggest help lately. Sing. You sound like youre trying to rasp up the note so much youre not paying attention to how youre forming the note. And youre grunting the note before you even complete it. Do you feel like youre singing? I'm sure you dont. You should be coming from a place of normal singing like you were doing opera. Practice singing the part youre trying to scream, in a technical classroom way. I would like to hear a post of that. And hold on to notes where there is space to, so we can know if youre supporting your air properly.

Sing.
You have to walk before you can run.
Sing, relaxed, with a loose jaw and open throat like youre trying out for an opera.

Well.. im a singing novice.. haha so there is no need for you to take any of my advice haha.. May i ask though.. how do you START screaming... Like ive read everything on how to scream.. ive watched the zen of screaming.. but for whatever reason my screaming sounRAB dead.. Ive im not pressing out air, It sounRAB like im trying to hard.. but if i do press out air.. my notes are all flat sounding no matter what i do.. Im not trying to scream through entire lines.. just behind the lines.. and maybe to wrap up a verse.. *see All That Remains- The Air That I Breathe CHORUS
If someone could just give pointers on How to start.. itd be much appreciated.

Define your definition of belt please. It's different to a lot of people, so before you can get advice you need to be a bit more clear.

With vocal melodies, usually it just comes with having a good ear. I always listen back to the instrumental about 5 times, and start humming something along with it, and it will fit. You need to make sure you know the melody of the instrumental like the back of your hand before you can come up with a good vocal melody. You could also start by forming a vocal melody that copies the guitar part, then start to break up the melody so that it still goes well with the guitar part, but doesn't follow it exactly; just change the way you phrase each word.

I know you said you can't afford singing lessons, but please at least buy some type of product so that you can have something to work with that will keep you on the right track. Let me know the max you could spend on a 1 time purchase for a vocal technique book or cd program, plus the type of music you do, and i'll suggest what will fit you and your style best.

hello!
i have been trying some warm ups to help avoid the "cracking" that occurs when i try to hit the higher notes but i have a problem. i'll do the warm up and the cracking goes away but when i then do a scream the cracking comes back. is there any tips that can help with this? help is greatly appreciated...

this thread seems to be JUST what i was looking for...

ok, I used to be able to sing before I was visited by the "hairy fairy". I used to sing stuff at school etc, but after I hit puberty i kinda stopped and never picked it back up...

well, now I'm in a band and I think I'm the only one who could possibly sing, so I made a ****ty little sample and decided to come here looking for a critique...

http://media.putfile.com/12341234

ok, thats me singing Catch 22's 12341234, please excuse....
1. the ****ty guitar, im a bassist
2. the ****ty quality, it was a quick run through with a computer mic...
3. some rather ****ty pronunciation, i know it sounRAB like i say "soap in your eyes" at the end.....

basically what im looking for here is an idea of how pleasing my voice is, its kinda raspy, but thats kinda the sound im going for, what im more concerned about its key and pitch etc.

now to me, it sounRAB pretty good, i think i might go a little off key on the "whine whine whine" part, but im not entirely sure. ive judged myself to be a pretty poor judge of my own work (hahaha, i just realized how ironic that is...)

anyways, any help is appreciated, thanks in advance

I would say youre probably tensing and squeezing the throat in there somewhere, among other things. Who knows. If you havent read my thread on isolation here: http://www.musicianforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=219911 ....I would say try it, and I'm working on another one for head voice. I've already done it just havent had much time to edit it. I think once you learn how to get into head voice smoothly it can really lessen tension in lower registers because many people just cant let go of chest voice well and they squeeze it and try to hold on to it and spread it up until you cant anymore then they break into falsetto from there and bypass alot of head register which takes a certain degree of release and relaxation in order to allow the larynx to hold steady.

yo!
i have the same problem with cracking/voice breaks, but in a different way.
if i sing soflty, i can reach most notes, and that voice break isnt there. Take city and colour's 'coming home' which i can do with relative ease as dallas has a softer voice. The problem is i want to increase volume to get over the instruments in my band, sort of like belting and using my whole range, but my voice has a terrible voice break. It seems as though my head voice and chest voice are completely different and arent connected. any exercises on youtube or advice here that could help?

Plus i want to develop a distinct singing voice can someone tell me all the dimensions for singing that can be altered? ie. resonance, pitch, diction, volume, - what else?
