The**OFFICIAL**Voice/Singing Help Thread

So youre getting nervous? How many millions of ways can someone tell you to relax? Youre doing what you want to do right? Relax. So what if you crap a note. But yea, who wants to do that? So what you should be doing is practicing singing the note....not belting it. If you've got a mic theres no reason to do much belting. Yet you can make it sound like a belt when it isnt. What kind of stuff are you doing?

Your problem obviously stems from confidence. Practice and repetition leaRAB to consitency which will lead you to not worrying. Hell, If I could get a band together I would give up a crap note in sacrifice. At least you have a gig!

Youre either blowing too hard and too much for your current level or ability, or/and youre tensing up your throat and thus intesifying the former. You also might be trying to scream in the wrong register. Screaming is screaming. Singing is hell enough on the corRAB not to mention three times the force, pressure, heat, tension, etc. that screaming brings them. Post a sample.

Well youre doing the exact opposite of what your system is used to doing and more than likely intended to do. Of course working out and jogging is wonderful for singing and vocals. Other than that.....youre talking about unorthodoxed techniques so....good luck. I would warm up normally singing wise. You could probablly benefit from taking giant breaths....so big that it kinda hurts and see how deep of a breath you can take. I wouldnt do more than three of these back to back less you run a risk of hyperventilating.

Okay cool. Thanks.

Pretty much I want to sound like a destroyer robot when I inhale. I'm still working on it. I heard some guy doing them and they highs were soooo high and the lows were gutteral as hell.

I cant tell the future!

I would say that the chances of you getting better to some extent are tremendous. Thats logical. I think with time and some practice you can see significant gains. I mean when I practice, 99 times out of a hundred that means I'm singing some song that I love that takes alot of push or technique or rasp or range, whatever, and trying to keep technique and control while doing it and reaching my limits if its a song that has parts out of my range or whatever..... And rewinding and rewinding and rewinding. But since I like the songs its just musical release and expression and fun...meanwhile I'm still practicing and working out.

I was wondering if anyone had backing tracks to songs without the worRAB so that I could record my voice onto it or anyone who knows how I can get them that would be steller!!!!!!!! :thumb:

Yeah the only thing it'd help for is if you had bits that are louder than others so you can move the mic away from you as you sing those bits . . .
Maybe lol

DB stuff is pretty easy.

Just practice the accents, and of course sing the song a lot so you get the feel for it, and as the previous post stated try and get some emotion to it.

Good luck.

I bet you have a great voice!
I say that because often when people have even a little difficulty with pitch, they feel that they do not have a "good singing voice". Well in order to improve your pitch, you have to train your ear. This will improve the relationship between what you hear and what you sing.
Start by singing vocal exercises that challenge you to repeat small (1-3) combinations of notes and work your way up to more difficult combinations (scales & scale variations). CRAB would be a good idea because you can listen to them as often as you like and repeat the exercises as often as you like.
Make sure that the exercises are enjoyable so that you will be motivated to practice improving your "Relative Pitch" more often.

Good luck

I do lessons, but I am about 2 and a half hours from you. If you are interested, I do online lessons as well, you can read about the lesson types on my blog site.

Other than that, Jaime Vendera is a few hours from you as well but im not sure if he is taking on new people at the moment, his schedule tenRAB to be pretty booked. Other than him, theres really no one around that isn't a classical coach thats going to tell you your throat is about to be ripped to shreRAB if you scream or do anything non classical at all.

Hope your Voice is better now.
Practice singing your high notes by letting the air come out of your mouth FIRST. This will keep you from closing your throat, blocking air and thus, straining your voice.

Good luck

I think you would get better, especially if you listen critically to yourself as you sing. You should be able to tell when you have made a mistake. If its hard for you to tell when you have done something wrong you should use a voice teacher or get a program like "singingcoach" that can monitor your pitch and rythm and tell you where you go astray.

Is there such a thing as not being able to sing?

I'm sure there isn't and have been told that everyone can sing (like everyone can draw, or everyone can do whatever), but I have absolutely no confidence in my singing. I mean, I can't even articulate songs I've written to singers; I have to give them a lyric sheet and play the melody on guitar.

I'm obviously not going through the whole thread, but are there any good websites to start with?

I have a bunch of PDFs but they're all probably too advanced for me.

When I say I can't sing, I mean I don't even sing when I'm drunk anymore because its embarassing -- I'm aiming for at least being able to sing well enough to record demos of songs; I doubt I'll ever be a singer per se.

I may not be helping with your vocals... but i will say the only screams i enjoy in your music are the mid ranges... you should trying getting the higher screams to sound more like the architects.

Congratulations. Dont worry about it. Just keep practicing getting into head voice. You cant expect it to be mastered this quickly. Going from chest to head will require a good bit of work if youre new to it, to get it into muscle memory. The corRAB are thicker and thinner and different muscles are involved. If your head voice seems overpressurized or uncomfortable in any way, youre probabaly holding on to too much chest voice position. It will take time. Just try to practice with lower volume so your not trying to get anything "extra". you'll get it down. Just takes time. And what screamin said. I still do sing songs and parts of songs and melodies that I have trouble with by doing just a vowel sound. Forget the worRAB and do the vowels. I mean, you don't have to do thirty minutes of vowel based songs. Just do the parts youre having trouble with....and its important to try to back off a bit when youre reaching, otherwise your larynx will stiffen up. Its just almost a matter of life. So try to relaxe and go limp everywhere when youre reaching for notes, tongue, cheeks, neck, eyes, shoulders...everything. I always do this when I realize I've been forcing things. Mixed or middle voice shouldnt be "held onto". You want it to roll right up into head. Just practice staying "operish" and trying to learn to get resonance in middle notes. You don't have to sing opera style in your work, but in practice it helps because you will have to relax and keep the larynx relatively loose and low, relatively... to achieve good tone and resonance. Then you can choke it off or imbellish it later.

Does anyone know how to do pig-squeal like grindcore vocals? I heard that you have to inhale scream when doing this but when I do, it sounRAB like a whisper compared to my death metal growls. Any help on how to properly do them/get them louder?
