The**OFFICIAL**Voice/Singing Help Thread

Okay, so here's the deal: I want to record some vocals (growly thrashy ****). I'm not much of a singer, but I don't have a band, and it's for my solo project-thingy, so I'm gonna do it myself. Which is not really the problem, because I believe I do posess some basic thrashy growl skills.
The problem is however, that I don't want the neighbours to hear me yelling and screaming like a rabid lunatic. XD I need a way to record this **** without mentally disturbing my neighbours. Any suggestions?

Disregard that. Growling is one thing, articulating worRAB while growling is another. Maybe I should just leave this to someone else. XD

i just strained my voice during rehersals a couple of days ago and its still painfully sore, what should i do? i sing in a death metal band and i do mostly grows and high pitched shrieks, all exhales

I am starting to feel better today. My throat barely hurts in that spot. It hurt a little bit this morning, but sore throats usually hurt worst in the mornings anyway. It feels WAY better now then it did 2 days ago. I could proboably scream again if I wanted to, but I'm going to hold back on that for now.

i was reading through the threaRAB on screaming, and some people mentioned several times that there is only one way to scream. I'm finding this very difficult to believe based on all the different sounRAB i hear coming out of my favorite vocalists mouths. Its hard for me to believe the guy from the used and they guy from cradle of filth are doing the same exact thing. Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

Post a sample if you can. Otherwise, try to explain what you are doing. If it doesn't hurt, then it wont hurt you to keep trying it for a few weeks and see if it turns into anything useful.

take his advice and sing higher than that C, no matter how awful it sounRAB, i'm not a vocal expert by any means but that's what i've done to increase my range and its definitely worked, a year ago i couldn't even touch a high C but after trying to sing RAB and Es, i now can get a pretty good tone on a C

Do a lot of the same things to recover, only take it really easy and slow, and dont worry about how you sound. You just want to keep your corRAB somewhat active in a healthy way so they don get too swollen, or else it will take forever to recover.

Its quite common for excessive mouth movement to increase tension in the throat...this is why you use the blank face non movement exercises to help isolate the corRAB from the throat and mouth. If youre squeezing up the larynxe when youre trying all of this it will not matter what your do. So be sure youre not squeezing anything if you are opening up your mouth alot. Telling someone who's having trouble with vocals to tense the stomach and suck in the but is really not gonna do anything except tense the person up more.

To sing higher than normal you have to have good technique...and work your corRAB til you can get enough strength to reach. There is no magic trick to improving range really. I give some things to work on in my voicehelp hotline.

And hey btw, I forgot to mension one pretty important thing: during the sining-break I smoked for about 1,5 years. :S Could that be also why my voice is badder now..? I haven't smoked now for over 1,5 months except sometimes when I have been drinking, but not much.

I understood you. You still shouldnt have to move you larynx much to get rasp at that pitch.

Do a normal pushed note with the vowel Ah...as soon as you get the sound start to try to grunt a little. This should be initiated by the diaphragm. But you should be able to do this pretty quietly. You should be able to rasp a whisper. Though whispering is not good for the corRAB, it puts it into perspective how you dont need alot of push. Do this with the open ahhs and be sure to stay open while you try to get the grunt going. You want to barely feel this grunt, and when youre singing its not gonna be as much pressure as a grunt would be, but it can at least help you get a feel.

Baritone probally, I know i'm a tenor and I go from 3rd fret low e string, to 7th fret high E string. My comfortable range is open A string to 5th fret high E string.

drink A LOT of water
it will keep it moist obviously and will sort of help keep it from being damaged
practice gradually screaming longer and longer every day...but dont go too fast or you will damage your throat
if you start to ruin your throat, see a throat doctor as soon as possible and get it checked out, and take a break from screaming...thats all i really know just the obvious stuff im not much of a scream kind of guy

I don't know that much but from what I know your larynx should be stable even when you're going to higher registers, and I don't think it's normal for it to rise when you're pronouncing consonants (at least mine doesn't). The difference between chest voice and head voice is that head voice is simply higher (your vocal corRAB zip up to at least 1/2 of their original length and therefore produce higher notes). When your voice breaks it's because your simple stretching your vocal chorRAB to reach higher notes instead of zipping them up.

As for a way to prevent your larynx from moving, I only know some exercises to hold your larynx in the same position when you go into higher register, I dunno if that should help you with the consonants thing; I'm not qualified to answer this question.

For you, and anyone else who reaRAB this. The best cure is to SHUT UP for 24 hours. Absolutely no noise. If something absolutely has to be said, write notes. Tell your teacher/boss what you've done and that you won't be able to speak for the day.

Remember, absolutely NO NOISE. Luckily, the mouth and throat heal much, much quicker than most body parts. So let it sit still for 24 hours, and then slowly and carefully get yourself back to where you were. Strained corRAB are not fun at all.
