The**OFFICIAL**Voice/Singing Help Thread

Glad to hear its working out. Just keep doing the lip trills and drinking pleanty of water and you'll be fine. A few weeks ago I strained while I was recording some stuff for about 6 hours with about 2 hours of sleep and because I did everything I suggested to you my voice was back to normal in two days. If you can get some at a GNC or something, get some Throat Coat Tea. It takes a bit to get used to because its pretty bad but have a cup of that every once in a while with some honey in it and it helps too.

i was curious what happened to the avenged sevenfold singer. not sure if anyone knows specifically but wanted to see if it was from inhale screaming or something...

thanks.

hheyyy guys whats goin on.

im wondering how important warming up is?

i warm up for about 20 minutes, not everytime i sing, but sometimes, just to see if it makes a difference..... but ive noticed that its not making much difference at all....

im voice still gets hoarse after a short period of time, even quicker because warming up uses up my "in the zone" time, ive noticed that im in the zone for about 10 minutes, where i can sing awsome then my voice goes to ****, basicly if i warm up my higher register.... im blowing those 10 minutes and by the time im jamming, i already suck.

people have told me that warming up helps you hit your higher range more smoothly and accurately....... not working.

im fairly certain that im warming up properly..... going up and down scales and doing "ees, aas, oos" but if anything, its hurting my performance.

so am i missing something? what is warming up supposed to accomplish?

Oh God... no, it is not from inhale screaming, his screaming was all exhale.

His major issue is that he has a low ranged voice, yet he continued to scream in a high range, which he just didn't have. He kept forcing and forcing high notes from his thraot that he couldn't hit cleanly, and eventually his throat and voice took damages from it.

Yeah. I also think you should make the vocals louder. I also like to do inhaled lows underneath my growls to make it sound full and ballsy. Give it a try.

I'm in the same boat as you, I've been inhaling again, and it hasn't done anything at all to me. I can't get the pig squeels down, but I can get a very Through The Eyes Of The Dead-esque shriek and mid-range inhale down perfectly now... our guitarist can do the squeels though, so we're probably gonna let him throw those in a bit every now and then.

However, I've found that if I tilt my head back and lean a bit, it's a lot easier.

Well, I don't know about the difference between a pressurized diaphragm and a relaxed diaphragm is, but I do know that that was how I learned how to scream, and from there I fiddled with it till I was able to add various different inflections and get different kinRAB of harsh vocals out. But maybe it's not a good way to do it. I dunno.

Hey,
I have been working on screaming like Keith Buckley from Every Time I Die, but my problem is, I have like next to little volume when I try to do it, like it comes out a whisper. And when I try to push it further it goes almost clean and sounRAB dorky. I don't know what I'm doing wrong.

Thanks

I'll be launching a site soon that will have a vocal section on it...it will have free lesson articles, as well as a place to buy lessons or download individual exercise mp3 downloaRAB (including screaming exercises). I wrote an article about screaming on it, but basically definitely get Melissa's Zen of Screaming 1 & 2. I just finally saw Zen 2 last night and love it; its really going to help out, even though there are only a couple of exericses in it, she really explains everything your going to need to know.

As far as introducing rasp into your voice, start by directing your air pressure into the soft pallate. This will make a lot more sense when my articles up, but you basically want to rattle your uvula (the dangling thing in the back of your throat). Doing so will teach you where the air neeRAB placed. For small amounts of rasp, you can push the air against that, or for intense stuff the entire soft palate will rattle.

If you get Melissas stuff, she has another technique for doing more intense screaming.

When I first started doing harsh vocals, I would have dizzy and pass-out spells constantly. Now, while that is in part due to other health issues of mine, the major thing that your body is telling you is that you are not getting enough oxygen to your brain. It is essential that you keep an even flow of air into your body....you have to remember to breathe evenly even when you are screaming.......

However, do not go overboard....you'll end up hyperventilating, i.e., getting too much oxygen at once.......remember....even flow.

Hi! I've got a couple of questions which are most probably newbish, so apologies in advance if they're stupid.

Can females sing in falsetto? A female friend of mine goes on about how her falsetto is great, but isn't falsetto supposed to sound feminine-ish anyway?

Also, can someone point out correct microphone technique? My music teacher pointed it out to me in vocals the other day, but I couldn't quite see what I was doing wrong...

Thanks!

I've found that to be contradictory. Your voice mechanism will not get stronger if you abuse it through bad speaking and singing habits for years and years. Puberty will bring on thicker vocal folRAB (MOST of the time) for boys and girls, which will mean deeper voices. The thing is though, that you'll meet very few people who are not stigmatized by society into speaking lower (in the case of most men) or higher (in the case of most women). That alone will screw you up pretty bad. It's perfectly fine to sing notes, to conciously produce pitch, just not for the time a person will usually talk every day. All in all, age will only help you in one area aside from being able to achieve a lower range; the amount of time you have to practice. It's the same reason you don't see many 10 year old body builders, nor do you see many amazing singers at a young age (though there are a few exceptions, people mastering their voice/instrument by the age of 16-17 and such.).

Yeah I know the feeling fuzzyhair. But that usually happens to be when I try to reach notes beyond my vocal range lol, yeah but anyway it usually wears out the next morning when my vocal corRAB have a rest so I don't think it's serious or anything, just some tired muscles. But still, you shouldn't tire them out everyday, it can eventually screw your voice up.

Trust your instincts: If you cant sing it you cant scream it. Thats only logical. You do the same thing to scream and sing....except to scream you do it harder with more pressure from the half blocked off throat which kinda acts like a thumb on the water hose, it creates a jet of higher pressure....this can be good and/or bad.

getting your voice lower is harder than getting it higher. To lower pitch your corRAB have to thicken and still keep shape to vibrate. All you can do that I know of is to just sing low stuff and keep trying to sing lower. I would start off slower lighter to make sure you have proper technique. Plus you have to work it enough to make your body want to change and not think its a fluke of living that it doesnt need to cater too. So that means everyday you should be doing some work.

Hi, I need some help.
I think my voice is fairly decent and I can sing well. I can sing quite low and really high but I can't sustain my high pitches sometimes then my voice starts cracking.
I was trying to sing One Republic - Apologize and found the beginning easy enough but the high chorus was difficult. I mean I can get my pitch that high but the problem is going straight there from the low range before that. I find it hard going straight up to the high notes and sometimes get the note sharp or flat before I hit it. It is similar to my problem when singing James Blunt - Your beautiful. The majority of the song is high and then when he gets to the second verse 'Yes she caught my eye, as I walked on by she could see from my face that I was -high pitch flying high. then from here I don't really know what happens to my voice and it tries to adjust back to the low pitch but doesn't and remains high :(
