The**OFFICIAL**Voice/Singing Help Thread

You know pain isnt normal! However, you would rather want it in your neck than your throat. Youre probably tensing something up or whatever. Try to work with it and see if you can keep your sound while trying not to stiffen jaw and neck muscles. And remember that you never really need to open your mouth to a maximum position. The mouth isnt connected directly to the larynx area, but its common for screamers to want to just throw the mouth open to a max and locked position.

I did warm up and kept myself like you said, and I did get a better result. I just need to practice it more. Thanks for the help. But I've got another question. During my search for vocal guidance I came across an article that I found was very interesting. I believe it said that not only do we have the two voice registers of the chest voice and falsetto, but we've also got another register, a more subtle register that lies in between both of them. It still uses your chest voice, but you've also got the breathy feeling of falsetto and can hit higher notes with more power. I've started use that register and it has helped my singing tremendously. Now, my question is... is this actually another voice register, or is it just a mental trick to get you to hit higher notes in your chest voice?

Well punk vocals generally arent very technique filled. But the way you said worRAB sounded like you were adam sandler doing the water boy voice. Your voice cracked on high notes too.
My advice would be to learn to sing without the nasality in your voice, then when you get better, apply it to the singing. Also punk singing is generally very high, so range is where you wanna focus a lot on.

Ok i have a cold now and my tone sounRAB all messed up, its safe to sing right? I just shouldnt overdo it and i should eat all that healthy stuff and i should be fine. Also do a longer warmup.

Right? or wrong?

I'm not sure what the response to this is going to be like..But..Could someone maybe just give me some advice for a guy who wants to start screaming? I don't wanna' hurt my throat or vocal chorRAB any, which is why I'm asking you guys before I even really try. So, maybe just give me a bit of start off stuff, something that would help me learn to scream, but also without harming me?

Id really like to improve my voice cause sometimes, especially after drinking water fro some reason, my voice is actually quite good and the two times Ive preformed people gave me abit of praise but alot of the time its abit monotone and sometimes plain terrible. I normally have to capo my guitar to about the 2nd or 3rd fret to sing along ok.

What exercises, within reason, can one do to expand their range and just generally improve the tunefullness of their voice? I know im never going to be a pro but it would be nice to be reliably ok.

I somewhat disagree. With rock, its so edgy it doesnt matter as much. but if youre a baritone and youre trying to sing even a high bartione or tenor song it will more than likely suck when you record it with quality mics. Hell I would love to cover circa survive live, but in the studio it would suck. The tone and quality will sound pinched and the ear can tell. But in general go for whatever. Your voice will let you know after a while anyways. Record it acapella too, anything you work on record it without the music and see how you really sound.

If you've been sick its still ok to sing but you should warm up more. And be a little more careful. UNLESS you have laryngitis. Sometimes you'll have laryngitis with an upper respiratory infection in general. So if youre not sure you dont have larry then dont sing until afterwarRAB. If your throat hurts any then you know its time to zip it up. If you're sick and your speaking voice isnt affected(the morning is ok because most people have more mucus in the morning) and if there's no pain, then sing. But again....I'm not a doctor.

I'm new here as well, and for me the melody always comes first...I suppose it's because I would probably classify myself as a musician first and a songwriter secondly. On the rare occasion that I do come across a good lyric to flesh out into a song...it's almost always the hook or chorus.

Okay I read this right after I took 3 Ibuprofen. I will stop taking it though. I havent been singing for the past 2 days. I drank a whole lot of water last night and I am going to carry around a water bottle today. What exactly are lip trills? I know I'm going to have to talk in class today. I hope that's okay. Thanks

I sing because I have the best stage presence. I'm not "that bad", it's just that the other three have 3 years of singing experience under their belt. Before yesterdays show we finally did a vocal warmup with proper scales and stuff that helped and I sang just fine, except i couldn't be heard because our **** "manager" never equalizes the mics well enough... the drummer sticks out like a sore thumb. I sang the chorus for the Used "All That I Got" and hit the notes fine... but I could feel my voice straining. I can't seem to get relaxed because I wont be loud enough. Maybe if I got a better mic I wouldn't have to try and be loud and therefore could relax easier? And I guess if all the answers are in the voice help thing (which I assume they are, because everyone seems to directed there) theres really no use for this... heh. Well I guess it was "singing too hard" then. Thanks

Edit: After watching the video of our performance, alot of people said I should be the lead singer, just wish I could become as good as my brother... which leaRAB me to this question, is there a way to learn "tenor falsetto"? (thats what the drummer called it, my brother sings really high without sounding retarded like I do in falsetto).

I have a few specific questions regarding the technique I'm using to get my harsh vocals (growling). I have been using the technique I do for about three months, and I don't practice too frequently. It's really not painful at all until I do it for longer than an hour, when it starts to get pretty uncomfortable. I basically use the technique I hear is most recommended: pushing from the diaphragm.

First, I can't get any length on them. I feel like I'm pushing quite a bit to get only about 7 or so seconRAB of pure growling. I uploaded a clip of me growling for as long as I can, starting with my lungs almost full.

Second, I hate the tone I get when I scream. I rarely ever get any "note" in my growling, and I know how to stop it when I do, but I can't seem to stop a "note" from coming out when I scream. It feels like the "rasp" of the scream is getting more choppy as I open my mouth more and more, and the rasp is almost gone when I open my mouth as wide as I can. I uploaded a clip of me going from a growl into a scream, using the exact same technique but opening my mouth a lot more.

This clip is one of me attempting a scream. You can clearly hear my regular singing voice coming through the scream.

This last clip is a bit redundant, but it demonstrates how the rasp gets more and more choppy as I open my mouth more.

If someone could tell me what I'm doing wrong or give me some advice, I'd really appreciate it. I'm not worried about my normal growling, just the length I can go for and the tone of my screaming. Thanks very much.

Im trying to develop more of metal voice, lamb of god, kill switch, all that remains, as i lay dying sort of voice. I sort of got it and working on the tips merkaba keps talking about but i still seem to lack volume. and suggestions?:chug:

Hi!

Im a lead singer for a band in which I scream the entire time...the only problem is I feel sore when im done screaming. Im aware that I am doing it the wrong way and I have stopped momentarilly...now my only problem is I dont feel like ordering/buying the Mellissa Cross DVD (which many people have recomended me) so can I have some excersizes to do that can help me not hurt my voice but sound like Angella Gossow from Arch Enemy (I may be a dude but she is one HELL of a singer)
