The**OFFICIAL**Voice/Singing Help Thread

post it, or YOusendit or something so others can listen and chime in. I'm not God, Dont want to be, and don't get paid. I'll be happy to see IF....IF I can hear anything that might help but I'm not trying to be a know it all. I dont do any one on one stuff from this site. I think it opens a door that I'll have trouble closing, if only because I tend to want to help too many people too much. Most people post up a short sample. And while here and there you'll find a smart ass, but usually everyone will help out, though some will be more ....uh...direct than others. But hey, you just joined, and its the internet, sea of anonymity.

But if you cant anytime sson...How do you know that youre doing it wrong? Pain, lack of stamina, sound,..whats up?

I just started screaming (possibly properly) last night. I was going through an amp with a lot of distortion like the guide said to do. Last night my voice started to hurt so i stopped. I didnt really feel any pain in my vocals, just my throat. This morning I wake up and my vocal chorRAB feel, i guess the best way to describe, stretched. On the sides of my neck my vocal chorRAB feel i kinda stressed, like I just did a workout. So am I doing everything, possibly anything, right? Heres a 5 sec. clip of me screaming testing 123.

p.s. im 16 and am trying to get possibly a norma jean styled scream like on memphis will be layed to waste.

Your vocal corRAB are still a bit swollen from the cold and coughing that came with it. Don't do any screams for a day or two, instead just drill your warm up exercises, sing cleanly, and drink about a gallon of water a day. You just need to thin the corRAB back out to their normal size since they are swollen now, so do lots of scales on EE as in SEE because that helps to align them properly.

If I were to post a few audio samples of a "how to scream" thing, would anyone use them? I have a different style and technique than Merkaba, and basically my whole approach to screaming is different. It's simple and easy to understand/use, and I think a lot of users here could benefit from it.

Just let me know if anyone would like to hear it.

This thread is really helpful.

I'm just curious, I know who Kristina is from her website, but who is Merkaba? He's extremely knowledgeable about vocals and I'm just curious how he learned to sing.

Anyway, I'm not too sure if this topic was discussed before but, how does someone learn to sing like Anthony Green from Saosin (now in Circa Survive)? Can a person train themselves to have such a high range or is it hereditary? He has a really nice scream, and his ability to interchange between explosive screaming and beautiful alto vocals is amazing. Something seen in very few banRAB these days.

Just curious, from a professional vocalists view, would Green's vocals be considered extremely good, average, or mediocre??

Thanks.

Mookie if you take your time and use proper technique you could be screaming forever as far as I'm concerned because it doesnt take as much push and strain as most people think. Hopefully you will practice enough to find this out with proper technique. I cant teach that over the internet. Learn to get raspy notes at a low amount of push. Check out the isolation thread if you havent. http://www.musicianforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=219911

Burning water...knowing about your diaphragm is good but its not going to directly translate into singing...at least not from a swimming background. You'll have good volume and air supply maybe. But it is a bit different when you have to clamp your corRAB around this pillar of air...and to minimize clamping otherthings. You have to be able to keep the larynx relaxed as you go up. And you can learn to hold it open like a yawn position, as you activate the corRAB. If you can sing, then its just a matter of constant practice and trying to stay relaxed. Be sure to warm up good too. http://www.musicianforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=219911

I ordered the book 3 days ago, and i'm just wondering how long it will take for it to come in. I'm sure it depenRAB where you live but how long did it take for you?

And when you say 3 main exercises, are any of those the lip rolls? If so, then I should probally work on being able to do those.

If your voice is shaking I would say that you might be pushing too hard for your current stamina/strength level....and/or tensing up and squeezing the throat. I wouldnt know of any other causes.

Hey Merkaba,

I've been practicing this past month on linking my bridges. I still haven't had any good results. How much time will it take me to start seeing some noticable changes if I'm practicing for 20 mins/day?

Pig squeels are more of an effect thing, and if it's all you do, you're an idiot. Sorry to burst your bubble, Waking The Cadaver kid.

Also, Fuzzy hair, your gutterals sound great, but your squeels are off. Try putting your toungue to the roof of your mouth, round where your upper teeth are, and doing the inhale from the base of your toungue.

To be able to use her vocal techniques to your benefit, you have to at least follow her guidelines of screaming (ie. using your false corRAB). If you don't, then you have to relearn your scream in a totally different way- her way. And I guess I'm confused about it because my screaming doesn't sound like that in the least, and I don't want it to. I think I'm using my true corRAB to scream, because my screaming voice is at least twice as loud as my speaking voice (unlike hers, which is almost a whisper), but I definitely don't want to relearn my vocals with that as a result. It's hard to explain what I mean.

Would her exercises help someone to keep their voice even if they used more true cord than her?

Cheese is bad for singing though, isn't it? :(

So I bought a cheap microphone and have been practicing scales and whatnot with it...yikes! It seems I'm still having trouble keeping my voice 100% in unison with the piano...I guess I need to work on hearing myself better. Any advice for that?
