The**OFFICIAL**Voice/Singing Help Thread

Well yea. But I dont get it...If youre a singer...then youre a singer. If you want to be a singer, or a performer. then youre not a singer. Youre just still wanting to be. So if you say youre a singer in a band...then that means you can sing and perform. Being in a band means you have to play in front of people. So I dont get it. Its like someone saying they want to be a singer because it looks cool. If you cant sing well enough to have the confidence to get up in front of people then you dont need to be in a band until you do. You cant make someone know they can sing...he has to find that out himself so that he knows it. If you know you can sing, but you just get stage fright, then you dont need to be in a band.

I have classical singing lessons, and I have a natural vibrato but sometimes my singer makes me bounce my vocals and not to do a vibrato.

I don't overly use it and keep it controlled - is this just a biast taste or will it help me to improve my voice?

no... no no no no no NO NO! If you want to take his advice, go ahead, but all you're gonna do is **** up your throat. NEVER use your vocal chorRAB or your throat to produce harsh vocals. Always make sure the sound is coming from your diaphragm (located in your stomache).

HELP! Ok, After about 6 months of flawless harsh vocals including death growls, I stopped practicing for about a month. Now all of a sudden when I go to growl or scream, my throat tightens up on reflex and I end up producing the growl with my vocal chorRAB, which needless to say hurts like hell. I can't figure out how to get it to stop either. I just can't seem to remember how to activate my diaphragm anymore. Anybody have a clue how to help me out here?

Surgical....you should be able to rasp any note you can sing. With minimal effort. This is where the whole isolation comes into play. Being able to know what it feels like to only move your corRAB.

Fuzzy...if its not loud....its not a scream right?

From the gut. From the diaphragm. Its just a figure of speech to describe the feeling of breath support when you breathe properly and pressurize the air behind the corRAB with a slow contraction of the diaphragm to get the air out. Its really the only way to push the air out but if you tense up your throat the sound will be pinched off, strained, and throaty, thus not singing from the gut but from the throat. I have a problem in my falsetto.

When I sing in falsetto around a G or G# note, it doesn't work. I kinda get two notes mixed together and it sounRAB horrible. The rest of my falsetto I can use fine. I really don't understand what the problem is and any help would be greatly appreciated.

Signing off, a struggling singer :upset:

First you shouldnt have trouble getting into falsetto. You should be able to hit falsetto notes with as much ease as talking. So if youre having trouble, then youre having way way way too much tension, and youre probably missing your head voice range because of this, which can affect your ability to "release" kinda, and let go into thinner cord edge control such as head and falsetto. I would suggest you work without alot of push in an attempt to realize the muscles/workings it takes to isolate the corRAB enough to get your full range. It shouldnt be a bitch to get across any part of your range. It should only be a bitch to try to reach the next highest or lowest note in your range.

Check out the hotline, especially the head voice link.

You can sing it down an octave if you want, but its probably not going to sound that great. Transpose it down by half steps until you get to a key you like...your guitarists may not like it but if the singer is off, no one will care to listen to the band anyways 99% of the time so its worth it for them.

Sad sound of truth...:thumb:

Thanx a lot, Merkaba!

I kinda don't know what should be the level of power. I think i listen so much to ppl saying "don't push" that i just don't go for it.

Well, so the thing to work on is breathing/support? Any special recommendation?

Thanx again, and anyone can drop his/her opinion, please.

I have the melissa cross dvd. hmmm. it wont teach u to scream. I actually learnt to scream and growl properly from a few minutes of a radio interview that she did. I would advise you to learn the technique of screaming first, then getting the DVD to help you stay strong. Basically what you have to do to scream is:
1. make a tiny kitten noise, or a frog noise. This should be easy and natural. Just try and talk as low and quiet as you can and you should feel the gentle rumbling in the roof of your mouth.
2. try and either put falsetto or a yawn underneath the rumbling sound. This is the hard bit. You will find that you can unite the rumbling and yawn, but only for a few seconRAB. Learn to find the balance and sustain it.
3. Once you can balance and sustain, build volume by pushing more noise out and using the diaphragm (thats the muscle that you pull when you try and exhale forever).

Hope this helps.

Is there any way to make your head voice thicker/richer? Going into head voice makes high notes a piece of cake, but the tone becomes very thin. Also you start to sound more girly/like a kid with the thinness and nasality

Do exercises with a yawning sensation. Do vowels like "OO" and "OH" and keep them very dark and hollow sounding. Also, there are non vocal exercises that you can do to fix that. One of them is called The Bullfrog, and its something Jaime Vendera came up with. Its extremely hard to describe, so its best to just get the Raise Your Voice 2 book. You can get the ebook version cheaper than the regular print one on getsigned.com. If you already have it, just look for the bullfrog section.

heh... al strzelecki... i kinda like yer post.
And Merkaba-1.. Thanks. I think i found them.. chest being lowest, head being kinda... middle and falsetto highest right?

ok... and for screaming... i've tried to read that too... I'm not that smart, i know, but i didn't really get much from the screaming. If you know the used i want to know how to sing like the main singer.... when i try to scream, one... it hurts, and two... it's not loud. If you got any tips that would be great!
THANKS!
