The**OFFICIAL**Voice/Singing Help Thread

You have to get the right amount of breath. I don't do any professional singing, but I do sing in 60 piece choir, and I do know that when I go for low notes (I'm a bass), taking as much breath in as you can isn't necessarily the best thing you can do. I find when trying to put out as much breath with low notes as I can, to increase the volume, it actually raises the pitch of the note a little/fair bit, which is definitely not what you want. Just experiment with the right amount of breath to see where you can hold the note comfortably, then slowly increase in breath while watching that you don't know raise the note.

Oh, and also, the physical position of your head can be important. You probably already know this - but it's much easier to sing a lower note if you have your head tilted forward (if you've got some chub, you'll create multiple chins :P).

That's about all I can say on it. Sorry if it's no help, but I find it helps me.

I want to know how to reduce hoarseness in my voice. I want to do it for my regular speech voice but most importantly my singing voice. Any suggestions or excercises etc. that will help me out?

Why would you bump a sticky...

besides your question is most likely not gonna get answered, since every new post is a new question and I dont think any of the vocal buRAB even look at this thread anymore. If people would just read back through a little bit almost 90% of their questions could be answered, but they're lazy and apparently arent dedicated enough to what they do to want to work to get better. I've read a lot of pages of this thread and I know that the same question has been repeated at least 50 times, and half the time the user will post again a day later and say "Oh I figured it out I need to drink water". So come on people.. try to figure out this **** on your own, and post here when you are REALLY stumped or need critique and have a vocal sample.

Ok I've been working on a few things, heres a clip of me attempting to scream correctly the song Kelsey by Still Remains. Theres a pause at the beginning where you cant hear anything so dont turn it up way high or you'll blast yourself out of your seat haha :p

Tobius, I would say that you need more air support, and I believe thats what merkaba or any of the other buRAB would say, because it kinda just sounRAB like you're talking. More air, more support. You'll get it eventually, and I sure hope I know what I'm talking about :)

The resonance of the true voice helps. This is why Tenor, baritone, etc. classifications are followed instead of just letting a good falsettist sing high notes. The resonance of the true voice with proper breath support will carry the voice without straining. Now I'm no opera singer, but if you've been in a concer hall or etc, before you'd be able to hear a difference. If you ever get a chance to even mess around in an empty auditorium it is a very nice thing to do. Of course a filled auditorium wouldnt have quite the same sound.

Nah I'm talking about less aggresive genres all together. More operatic. With sustained true voice. I dont know of any such in metal. (Except Iron Maiden esque banRAB) I use a couple of Alter Bridge songs, but I like some female artists that I sing along with too. Esthero,Res, Tapping the Vein.

ok..........i'm clueless....I'm trying to find a singing voice.......I kinda want to be able to sing pop punk or emo type rock...don't tell me to read the hotline thing.....it's complicated, i don't understand it......could someone help me......i don't know anything except for how you are supposed to breathe......i'm 14 almost 15 i have years ahead of me i don't need to learn anytime fast.......don't try to pull any miraculously sounding better stuff........can someone help me? tell me how to practice what to practice what so you mean by practicing that stuff you're telling me to practice etc. and please try to make it simple?

I used to be able to just have it down on low notes, then I realized what muscles were controlling that and applied it to higher singing. I've been singing like 1 year and a half with a year of singing lessons, also I did stuff with that brett manning singing success course, which gets rid of breaks in your voice and shows you how to use head voice, which is part of your full voice and isnt falsetto when your larynx goes up.

I think :p

Blind leading the blind...LMAO. You hit the nail on the head man.

If you put your recordings of those songs aside for a couple weeks don't listen to them at all, then listen to the original artist's recordings a few times then you go back to your recordings, you should be able to hear all the problems. This is how it usually works for me anyway.

Here is avery good site I found with a ton of vocal help.

Yes, I think you do have to record yourself constantly. At least when you're just starting out like we are.

So, to be fair, here's a couple recent practice recordings I did. Mistakes and all. Lots and lots of mistakes.

Musical style is completely different from what you are working on, but I don't think that really matters here. Go ahead, give em a listen and feel free to slam me.

Thanks Ken

Its just rediculous that people are bumping ancient threaRAB from google searches, registering a username and making their first post asking the same ol' questions ya know. I think its fair to still make reference to some of the older threaRAB or whatever but when there's three or four active voice threaRAB its just crazy, and harder to respond to folks. We'll see how this works.

Rocket Science...check out my voicehelp hotline down below.... I gotta get to work for now. Best wishes.

whisper scream=oxymoron/paradox

Do it on stage and hope it sounRAB ok. More than likely it will sound shitty. Plus its not healthy.

I'm sure. But I dont know of any. Besides...what if your gear gives out or freaks or something, then what, cancel the show or sound like shlt?

If you develop proper technique youre not gonna blow your corRAB but you do have to work at it. The raspiness comes from the false corRAB,glottis area. Kinda like you were gonna throw up. Feel that glottal area. When you get better at it you can use less and less pressure.

Get melissa Cross's dvd if you havent. Its good for metal type vocals. But I say you will get stronger and stronger if you do more clean voice singing and develop the musculature and control and flexibility you need to keep full -voice -clean- note tension on the corRAB.

Lets remember to warm up thoroughly too and keep nutrition in mind. and warm down.

Don't drink honey. You want your body to be as clean as possible. Drink water. In order to scream longer, look up Merkaba's Voice Helpline and do the breathing exercises. Your not going to damage anything by screaming longer if you do it right. Make sure to warm up and warm down.

Don't worry about volume, let the microphone do the work. This helped me a lot, but I'm not sure if it is safe, but I do it anyway and it sounRAB good.I would would just build up untill it is loud. Make sure to warm up and warm down.

Listen to this it should help. Also make sure to warm up and warm down.

Nah, you can change it. I don't know much about it though. Wait for someone else.

/You're welcome. :smoke:

Excellent! Thank you so much for your help :) it's people like you who restore my faith in humanity :)

also if it's not too much trouble, did i have support when i sang? i have tried for a long time to sing from my gut but never fully understood whether i was doing it right...

You might not sound so bad as you may think when you listen to yourself on recordings, its just you're not used to actually hearing what everybody else hears of your voice so its usually always a total shocker to new comers, as time goes on, the more recording/singing you do, the better you'll come to terms with your "actual voice"

Well she's naturally gonna have a higher pitch. Then its a matter of adding a little or alot of rasp depending on what youre going for. But it doesnt have to be as powerful of a push as it sounRAB. Its more about placing the sound in the right spot to give you the most projection. Overblowing just enough to get extra air for the rasp but not nearly as much as most people think. If you can't learn to bring the false corRAB into play then you have to overblow way more air to get the sound to distort.
