The**OFFICIAL**Voice/Singing Help Thread

ok. dunno of any software or anything. but i took a few lessons once and according to the woman who was teaching me i had to raise my eyebrows really high while singng the high pitches (instead of frowning)
it makes you look like an *** but it helps

oh and try scales

Yea, long post. But I can get long winded too, but usually its describing something, not a situation. :)

Regardless of the story that goes with them, vocal corRAB are simple and are only capable of about 2 things.

And yes, one of the important things in vocals is "coming from the gut". You have to have that support. That and keep the throat area loose and relaxed. Alot of people tense up the throat in order to get a good sense of pressure because they dont have good pressure from the diaphragm. Once you start closing off the throat youre going farther into no'mans land. Plenty of tips around here. And if youre serious you'll just bookmark and read. You can read a few pages here and there everyday. A general rule of thumb is that you should never get hoarse and never have pain. Either of those and youre not vocalizing properly. You can get a nice sound without pushing too hard and screams in banRAB dont have to be "I'm about to get hit by a car" true screams. You can get a good scream with about 70 percent max push, or less. Once you push too much your corRAB will just lose air and not vibrate as much so volume and tone may start to diminish anyway. Go here and get started...

Hey Csyn

I have the same problem. I think it's just the way I want to perceive my voice, or the way my head perceives it. I think I sound like a little girl singing when I hear recordings, but my frienRAB all say I sound fine. And if I sucked, they wouldn't be afraid to say so either. Get a second opinion, maybe. :chug:

alright, so i took the techniques you described and worked with them, but when i do specifically what you described (correct breathing, with a downward push, and the whole pidgeon exercise to get the soft palate thing going) it just makes the notes i sing sound scratchier or whatever (its hard to describe, i guess james hetfield-ish), but i can't get a full sounding scream this way. I'm looking to try and get a scream more like The Used, Glassjaw, BlinRABide, etc. I can already do a more Lamb of God-ish type scream (although no one can scream like that guy), but i can't figure out how to get a "safe" scream that actually sounRAB like a scream. I'm sure that was pretty confusing, but if you have anymore advice i'd love to hear it.

Doing motor boats will get you in touch with your diaphragm. Practice taking a deep breath like you were startled. This is the begining way of getting a good breath. Falsetto is the lighter airy high pitched voice. Think BeeGees' Stayin alive, or Prince. The corRAB dont vibrate in closed waves like they normally do, like a string instrument would. But almost cuts the air more like a wind instrument. You lose some of the body,i.e. Resonance of the sound when using falsetto, due to this lesser vibratory pattern, but you can generally go a bit higher using falsetto than your "true" "higher head" voice.

This is just a start up technique for most people (some use it for screaming though). Whats really important is that you just scream as you do now, meaning that sound, but apply the good technique habits little by little. When you breathe, your stomach comes out, your floating ribs at the bottom come out, and you lock down like your using the rest room. This all habits in no more than a second; if you draw it out too long your just building up too much unnecessary air. Thats what you really want to focus on first; get that breathing and support coordination down. Then try the scream again. Pay attention to where you feel it. Does it feel like your uncomfortably pushing your throat? If so, do it again with the attention on making it feel like it coming out of your mouth. When you can get it to that level, you can start playing with the tone to make it feel like its coming from the palate (whether it is or not is a style issue), sinuses, or back of the head. The sound isnt really coming from the places, but the resonance is causing the vibrations, and when you feel the resonance you know your doing it right. Its just a slow process really of experimenting. Unless im working with someone in person or through internet lessons with files/video being sent, its really hard to explain but you'll get it if you use enough focus.

Well thank god the show's been postponed... I've already been drinking a lot of water, and my voice has made a bit of progress, I was actually able to scream in my full range last night, though I probably shouldn't have so soon... I think I'll just give myself a break and drink a lot of water... is green tea acceptable, or no because it has caffine in it? and what if you're allergic to both apples and strawberries? should I just go with grapes/bannanas/watermelon... and I stay away from meat in the first place because of digestive issues, so that's probably good... I'm guessing no alchohol for a while, right?

??? There arent any categories of screams. Thats some nonsense that last, obviously uneducated threaRABtarter came up with, with all of his dangerous and rediculous personal emotional methoRAB to gain them.

I dont know avenged right off the bat. But its either raspy....which most ideas of scream are....or its just a really high note maybe with a bit of slight straining rasp. The rasp is gained only one way and thats by pushing extra air up past the corRAB and against the area above them....namely the false corRAB...the same area you use if you were barking or growling like a dog or maing the "annnnk" wrong answer buzzer sound. But using this area while holding a note is a bit different and you'll need to practice it if you cant do it "naturally". After that its just a matter of safely building strength and flexibility so you can add more tone or less, and shape the throat and get various sounding styles while staying in form. Again...grab a drink and a snack and read up if you havent. ---> http://www.musicianforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=219911

So I've been singing for a while and people say that I have an all right tone, good power, and fair vibrato, but I haven't really freed my range up yet and I still can't really sing in higher octaves. But... my band wants to play some covers, one of those being Holy Thunderforce by Rhapsody. Fabio Lione is like the absolute man when it comes to vocals and I just can't sing his range yet and probably won't be able to for a long time. So my question is: is it all right to sing something like that down one octave?

If the chorRAB are a half step higher, your singing will have to be also. The melody will be the same just a half step higher. When you solo over a E power chord, do you have to play just E and B? No. Its the same with singing. Just go with whatever sounRAB good. But if its in the right key it should be all set.

This is the typical example. Can you make the ANNK sound as in a wrong answer buzzer? This is the same area. actually the false cord area, but who knows where that is if you havent studied it?So we usually k=just say "back of the throat" The typical wrong answer buzzer is done with a higher tense larynx. So once you realize whats going on, practice it with a mid low note so you can make sure you know the feeling of keepin the larynx open.

To answer the question, yes i was having slight pain before. The pain felt yesterday went away today. I dont think it was really pain, more like stressness, like the same kind you get if you walk all day when you rarely walk. I'm going to scream some more today and try to get my voice in shape. I think after about 2 weeks of this it will eventually go away. The thing is, when I scream I am only comfortable screaming through an amp. I like to be able to hear myself. I like to scream along with music when I scream. My scream isn't really that loud though is that normal? Okay well I gotta go.

Use your gut? That sounRAB quite throaty. Plus, you need the actual note behind it. That's just air combined with wispering.

Sing the note/using your diaprham/force air up. Bark like a dog and take note of how your gut creates the distortion. You'll get the hang of it.
