The**OFFICIAL**Voice/Singing Help Thread

Sorry man, but you need work. I can say that without feeling too bad about it because I'm in the same exact boat.

Issues we are both dealing with...
1. Lots of pitch problems.
It seems so easy to listen to someone else and hear the pitch problems, but it's very difficult to judge yourself. You better be able to record yourself in optimal conditions (headphones, instrument levels just right, hearing yourself very clearly, etc, basically studio conditions) and have it come out near perfect before you think about fronting a live band. I've just recently got the nerve to go out and do a few open-mic nights after feeling like my home-practice-demos where acceptable, and you know what, the live stuff SUCKED BALLS. It's tough, unless your one of those naturaly-pitch-perfect freaks, which I aint. That doesn't mean I'm giving up, nor should you, but there is need for quite a bit of practice. There's lots of advice on the web for improving pitch. Dude, I'm trying too man.

2. Support.
SounRAB more like yelling or talking loud rather than singing. I think this is what everyone says when they talk about support. I'm just now learning that you MUST use a certain amount of "resistance" when singing. Pretend you're pushing out a "deuce" and then sing it, even the softer notes. Anyone please correct me if I'm at all wrong here. I think this helps with pitch too.

I'll try to post some of my stuff too....

Sure post one. But i dont understand what youre talking about with the air coming through. You mean when I said extra air for raspiness? That basically means singing harder than you need to so you have more of a sound to bounce off the throat. When you sing your corRAB open and close in a certain shape like hundreRAB of times a second depending on the pitch. So youre actually making hundreRAB of little seperate puRAB of air. If its a note, ts all the same, its just how big can you get your puRAB, for loudness and having enough momentum so the air can be bounced off of the back of the throat to create the rasp.

If you have a place to practice without being judged. Like a moving car with you driving!

Nothing is wrong with whisper screamo man, i have heaps of range, but if u got a mic, cup ur hanRAB hold it 30cms back and whisper scream hard, pretty easy

well to just help yourself just use a computer microphone. It will definately help you, and if you sound good you will sound good at shows, thus letting you sell more merch, thus letting you buy equipment!

I teach it but I wont start teaching online stuff again for a couple of weeks. The best thing is Melissa Cross' DVD, and she also has a CD called Scream Extra, but as far as online sites or downloaRAB, I don't know of anything else.

Hey I have a couple of questions on melodies and singing. Bear with me though, I'm trying to teach myself how to sing until I can afford a teacher so these may sound ridicolous/obvious.. or not. :p

But anyway, question 1: If I write a song that goes for example.. D-E-G.. when I'm playing D, do I HAVE to sing D? the D chord (as you know, but..) has: D, A and F#, so can I sing F#? can I hold an A note while playing a D chord? or is this wrong? And even on a farther strech.. if my song goes: E-A-B , do I have to sing according to the chorRAB at all if I'm singing notes in the key of E? Because.. what if I have a melody line that sort of hits a lot of notes of the scale, and they may or may not be included in that particular chord during the progression? Or should the progression follow the melody wherever it goes?

Question 2: Now, say I move that up with a capo. I move it up to say the 4th fret.. so now "D" is: F# , C# and A#.. is it still a D? can I still sing the same melody as before and just play the chorRAB up there? I know this is more of a theory one I guess..

Any help is greaaaaaty appreciated :)

-Chase

Doesn't really matter. Melissa makes it at speech level and relys on mic techniques to increase the volume. I usually teach people either to do that or to do it at about a 7 or 8 on a 1-10 scale if your regular singing is at a 5 if that makes any sense. Any louder and your going to start limiting your screaming range quite a bit.

AAARRRRRHHHHH!!!!!!!! Blasphamy!!! Go here and read the mucus sections. Entertaining(not just from me but other posters) and informative. And if you really think about it...what could insulate your corRAB? They are in your windpipe! Please read----->http://www.musicianforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=219911

If you work it, it will feel worked. The less proper it is the more your larynx will have to work actually. True voice singing in your normal "tessitura" or truevoice vocal range could be done pretty much all day with no ill affects. Be sure to warm up and warm down. If you've gotten to where you can scream that much its really a matter of just working to get and keep things consitent and crisper, and taking care of the tissues. If you can do ANYTHING for three hours without pain, we can assume your technique is at the least decent. Probabably superior, as far as the rasping goes. If you want more tone and power you've got to do true voice singing. Its my new creed. True Voice Singing, in all your range, with a tad more push than necessary.

carry on smoking and you sing like matt skiba in "radio", whether thats good or not, i'll leave to you. depenRAB how old you are, teenagers can recover quickest, take about 6 months to a year

Yeah but I'm 13!

So - Wait, first off, get on soulseek so talking won't take so long.

Alright. So, I should get a feel for the metallica stuff, then once i get good at that, practice pushing harder, then to go high just raise the pitch? I'm going to listen to your lessons again.

I know I shouldn't try to imitate my voice to other people's voices, but my frienRAB and I are doing a show at school. One of my frienRAB and I will be playing A New Hope by Blink-182 and the other is Gainesville Rock City by Less Than Jake. In A New Hope, Mark Hoppus is the singer, so I imagine it wouldn't be too hard. My talking voice is low like his singing voice, and I'm not really sure what my singing voice is like. I only know that it sucks because I haven't recorded myself yet. I was wondering how to make my voice sounRAB somewhat Mark Hoppus-ish. And in Gainesville Rock City, Chris sings the verses and Roger sings the choruses. Chris has a cool, raspy sounding voice. It's not hardcore street punk rasp, but just a hint of raspiness. That would be cool if I could get some tips on how to sing kind of like him, too. I think Roger's voice is far out of my range. Thanks for any help and tricks.

Can you teach yourself how to sing? That's my question.
I'm a self taught guitar player and drummer of a couple years now and I'm (without bragging) always looked up and mentioned by frienRAB and such when it comes down to instruments.

But one thing I've never tried but always have wanted to be able to do is sing. So I've been sort of working on it lately. I have a good ear so I can pick up notes and mimic styles quite easily, and to me some things I "sing" sound fine but I've never tried singing to anyone else to have their opinion because I always figured it was all in my mind and I probably sucked in reality.

So the other day I was in the basement waiting for my band to arrive, and I was singing/playing Alice In Chain's Nutshell acousticly. My band walks in without me noticing (which is good because I'm shy. so I didnt notice and kept singing loud) and they were freaking out asking me when I learned how to sing and where that came from.

Needless to say I was pumped about it, but then again.. that IS a really easy song to sing sort of.. and, I WAS just mimicing someones voice not knowing what the hell I was actually singing and just trying to be in tune with my guitar..

But since then, I've been wondering.. is it possible to teach yourself how to sing? have any of you guys? I know a couple people but it's always like "my dad was a singer" or "my uncle was in a band and gave me some tips"

if it IS possible, how should I go on about this whole thing?

any help/replies are appreciated, sorry for the goddamn long post haha

Thanks dude, I'll definitely look into it. Is it geared towarRAB ultra-basic can't-sing-a-note sort of singers? Because most of these books are aimed towarRAB people who might sing karaoke and want to improve or whatever...I don't even sing in the shower, and there is NO WAY i can sing a new song to my singer - have to give the lyric sheet and then either make a midi version of the song or just play the vocal melody on my guitar.

Anyone seen this?

I hate my spoken voice as well (I'm too scared to do radio interviews, or even normal interviews in case the interviewer picks up on my voice) so it looks like a good buy.

Read through some of the hotline ifyou havent.

Then post a sample Auz or I or some one knowledgeable will get to you not to mention many others who might say "dude you suck!" I sometimes am not around for few days but will get to you eventually.

You need to understand that singing itself is a workout, screaming is like a tour de france. Your corRAB are mucus membranes and they will attempt tp recover and protect themselves by covering up in mucus. Sometimes you may think youve lost it or something because your voice isnt doing its usual but its only too much mucus. This can be the case many times. And dairy yes, creates more mucus because in general you cant digest it well. I'm not saying that youll be super or even see a difference but you owe it to yourself to try without dairy for a while. Its not the end of the world. And any vocal teacher worth their salt will tell you the same. You also need to warm up by singing normally I would say for thirty minutes, slowly increasing the difficulty. This is when it pays to have a broad range of musical tastes. Over time you can decrease or increase warmup by being able to tell what your corRAB are ready for.

And warm down by at least normally lightly singing low vowels.

hey guys.. im just new here..! is there anyone here write songs that melody comes first before the lyrics? can anyone teach me a technique? please.. but i got a standard vocalizing.!

Yo, kind of new to these forums...as in just registered today :D

I went through your vocal threaRAB already but just have a quick question. I'm pretty confident in my ability to have low to mid-high range while singing smooth...but once I try to rasp it all goes down the toilet and sounRAB like crap.

I'm trying to end up with a rasp similar to:

I'm currently working on learning guitar, and many of my frienRAB have been playing for 5+ years. So maybe If I learn to sing...was thinking we could start a band, I don't know this early :)

But, the way he sings just doesn't sound like it's coming from the back of his throat as you [Merkaba] describe.

Just maybe you could help me out with this issue :D

If I get a chance I'll try to record me singing normall, but finding a time where I would be able to sing at full range and volume might be tough ;)

THanks!
