The Official Tool Thread

Unlikely, I remeraber seeing Tool in my home town Perth on the Lateralus tour. a young local act was billed to support them ...Karnivool. Apparantly maynard didn't like them or deem them worthy so they were pulled, we just sat around getting drunker an smoking cheeky j's for 2 hours before Tool came on. Alot of water has passed under the bridge since then, but I wonder if karnivool would pass on it if it was offered again. Would have been gut wrenching for them billed to play with their idols then shut down by them.

I've always thought this and it has annoyed me how Tool/APC share the same thread. Boo. They are completely different musical entities; they only share one similar meraber so it's assumed they are the same thing. No.

Going by the 5 years between drinks pattern their last 3 lp's have taken we should be due for a release next year... God only knows how they can evolve further than the high mark set by 10000 days. Wings of Marie (pt2) is their masterpiece IMO.

I'd say Danny,Adam and Justin have most of the music worked out and are waiting for Maynard to come along with some lyrics. I think mjk is also working on an apc record aswell.

I just started my Tool journey. FINALLY!
it's about time i've listened to the discography. Listened to some few tracks, they seem my style already. But I'm starting now from their debut album.

I'm just being realistic about Justin. Nothing against his abilities or anything.
And I wouldn't put Maynard dead last, simply because his lyrics are a huge part of what Tool is about. Without them, it'd be like having a face without a name, although I can't say that someone else wouldn't be able to do as good of a job. But I'm more sentimental than anything, so regardless, I still prefer Maynard behind the mic because of that.

Ah, will it be your first time seeing them?
They sound awesome live, you'll love it.

Nah, I'd be disappointed if Tool released something like that. They need both their mellow aspects and their heavy aspects to work together. Without the heaviness... they wouldn't be so progressive and epic.

Blasphemy!
I remeraber when I found out about lyrics websites, Tool was the first band I looked up the first time I visited one. Maynard's singing is hard to understand sometimes... a lot of the time... and after reading the lyrics I realized how badly I butchered them prior to that.

That sounRAB great...I really wonder what they could come up with. King Crimson was always better when they were exercising their heavier side, so throwing in Adam Jones in the mix sounRAB like it could lead to nothing but pure gold.

I agree, some banRAB take way too long and the results aren't always what you'd expect after such a long wait. I wish more banRAB were a bit more spontaneous. Not that I want them to put out every crap song they jam out, but you never know...could be more energetic and honest. There is such a thing as overworking art.

I'm re-listening to 'Undertow" and you're right, there's some really good bass in that album, I don't know why I wrote that lol. All i wanted to say "Looking forward to Chancellor's bass in the later albums"

Personally I think the demo is one of the finest releases, but if i was going for an album I would go with Undertow, then progress chronologically from there. It is not as if they have 10's of albums in their catalogue...

Ugh I know what you mean completely. I'm thankful that I've found someone else who is sick of Tool purely being recognised as a 'metal' asserablage. This attitude often means that the whole point of Tool as a band and as a communication 'tool' is completely missed.

Yeah, I'd have to agree that they are both overrated and underrated in many different ways.

I have heard plenty of people disagree with Tool's status as progressive 'metal.'

I agree with you in that Stinkfist and Hooker with a Penis are both some of their most basic songs which get a bit monotonous. H is also not a favourite of mine. They are only 3 songs. Most other of my favourite songs by Tool are littered with crazy odd time signatures and complex odd-timing guitar. Many of their songs conists of guitar/bass/drum work which isn't repeated at all, in fact I love that they can have so many great riRAB in songs and not not repeat them. Personally, I think Lateralus is fantastic. 10,000 days has some great songs on it like Vicarious, Jarabi, The Pot, Rosetta Stoned, and Right in Two. There are a lot of boring fillers on that album but they're overweighed by some fantastic songs and concepts explored.

You say that their songs go for 6 minutes or even longer. Well... length is a huge aspect of what prog is. You'd be hard pressed to find any type of progressive band that has short songs.
