The Official Tool Thread

I remeraber arguing with some guys the other day who crapped on Adam Jones for using too many "nu meta" riRAB.

Don't really hear it, unless all hard rocking downtuned riRAB are nu metal ones.

Lateralus is my favorite of theirs, I certainly don't here anything nu metal-ish in there. Aenima? Maybe.

Lol yeah, I know what you mean. I once dated a guy that took me to see Tool, but he was too distracted with his hard on for Carey to notice that I was there with him.

On a sidenote, Jones played with a Stratocaster when they recorded "Pushit", which incidently is the same guitar my boyfriend plays and they also share the same last name  I notified him of this and was immediately shunned for the rest of the evening :p:
There's a lot of hate for this band.

I just LOVE how Parabol segues into Parabola! That solo is godly... in fact the whole thing is godly. It sort of has its own momentum if you know what I mean - it's as if you're riding on a wave while listening to it. P/P is the best thing Tool have ever done IMO and that's saying a lot... I guess I'm still a fanboy :D

Meanwhile, the prospect of this excites me. I feel that Adam Jones is one of the few modern guitarists who really *gets* the Frippian anti-solo concept so this could end up being quite interesting. In fact, I think it was MJK who said that King Crimson is pretty much the band they'd been ripping off over the years.

Chancellor's techniques are something that I really appreciate. If you take the time to decipher exactly which instrument you are hearing at what time, you might be surprised to find out that, "Holy ****! That was a bass?!"

But if they aren't recognised for the 'raw brilliance' they've shed into the world, then this if anything means they're underrated, doesn't it?

Either way, I'm also annoyed by people who worship Maynard like some kind of a god or something. He is an inspiring individual and musician who has great influence but he isn't the ONLY meraber of Tool and I think most people forget this. Adam, Justin, and Danny are just as important figures in the band. And the kind-of worshipping that Maynard receives from many crazed fans is exactly the kind of thing that he openly hates about the music scene.

Dang, Tool is pretty much my favorite band right now. I can't find one bad song of theres. As a bassist I look up to Justin Chancellor, he is absolutley sick. MaynarRAB lyrics have so much meaning behind them that it delves into your subconscious and makes you rethink everything about yourself. I dont know many lyricists like that.

It's up there definately, but the best song on 10000 has to go too Wings For Marie (pt2).

... You were my witness, my eyes, my evidence, Judith Marie, unconditional one.

Lateralus is my favourite album. I'd start with Lateralus and 10,000 days. I find most people like these albums more than their earlier ones, like Aenima or Undertow.

True, he's noticed amongst drummers, but 90% of the time, when you hear someone talking about Tool (especially if it's a female; go figure), they're usually ranting about how much a god Maynard is. Have you heard is side projects? I've listened to it hear and there and am not impressed. As a band, Maynard of course steals the thunder. That's why I am always cautious of the front man. :) I typically favor Mr. Jones. Keenan's lyrics touch me, yes, but Jone's riRAB make me cry. He's truly an underrated mastermind - not only in the sense of playing the guitar, either. Also helps that he kind of looks like Spock.

I wouldn't bat an eyelid if Tool just did a really mellow album with one of those really deceptively complex rhythyms from Carey, with some nice subtle guitar work and Maynard using his quiet, almost whispering voice... Although they do heavy music and excel at it, they are way too talented a bunch to limit themselves....
