The Official Smashing Pumpkins/Billy Corgan Thread

Gish is incredible, i love that album. Siamese Dream was really good too, but i honestly think thats overrated somewhat. Mellon Collie was an amazing album, one of the best i have ever heard. But adore and machina, were sub-par for what the pumpkins could really do. But you could tell that they were going to switch over to electronica-pop after Mellon Collie. I dont really like that stuff. But Mellon Collie hits nearly every type of rock effectively and they even hit electronica, which some of their electronic stuff on that album is ok. I just love how they play each type of rock soo well and stuff outside of rock.

It would but I would say that some songs off of Aeroplane Flies High can replace some off of MCIS. If that happened then it would be a better albuim than Siamese Dream.

I think thats kinda sad that people only bother with one song from an artist - or even sadder that alot of "artists" these days are only good for one or two songs...

I have to admit to being a bit of an album purist and enjoying albums as bodies of work... which, I might aruge, attracted me to the Pumpkins - their albums sound like albums, complete and whole... to think of them as a singles and EP band feels, kinda wrong... but if the songs are as a good a quality as they can produce, I'll still be lining up for a listen (or an EP) - I just wanna hear new Smashing Pumpkins songs darnit!

Y`see i`ve been saying that for years but for some reason people always seem to think double album = work of genius.

Most double albums i`ve heard suck, this one more than most

For a while I was quite disappointed with the quality of the new stuff. I actually don't mind it now. Billy put out a lot of classic material, and now he is just making music the way he wants to make music. In the past he was motivated by personal problems and stress, and now he is more relaxed about it and it shows. I'll keep listening to his Teargarden project just because there are a ton more EPs that are supposed to come out and there actually have been a few hints of his former genius.

I agree with you about referring to them as the Pumpkins these days. When Jimmy was still there I was ok with it, but now that Billy is the last original meraber left, I find it hard to call them that.

:offtopic:

Aside from the fact that I don't think they piss on any of the groups listed. You'd need to loom miles above a group to piss on them, and I would say that while their are better groups than the three listed, no one is so much greater than them that they could piss on them.

Recently I found the I Am One UK single at a record store here in Vancouver, Canada and listened to the old Gish-era B-sides that I hadn't heard in ages. Tracks like 'Plume' and 'Starla' reminded me just how amazing the Smashing Pumpkins were over their varied lifespan. "My boredom has outshined the sun/" Billy sings on Plume, back when their tracks sounded more alt-rock, more Nirvana-grunge, if you know what I mean.

What I'm trying to say is talk about the Smashing Pumpkins and/or Billy Corgan. Sorry if a thread has already been started.

It's possible I played down the role of Iha in my post... I was thinking less of the live situation than the albums and the recording process that would often just screen him and D'arcy out anyways... so, indeed I stand corrected!

Absolutely horrible live band. They sound so good on cd and I was so excited to see them at Lolapalooza, then they came on and sounded like ****. After a while people started throwing water bottles, I was one of them. That ticket cost me a lot of money

Right, and like I said, I didn't come in merely to express my distaste. I had some good things to say about them too. I like Siamese Dream a lot and think Corgan evidently had some talent in him. I also liked the guitar work of Iha on that particular album.

Other than that, it's common behaviour on these boarRAB to go into threaRAB about a particular band and express some particular negative criticism. You will be well aware that various moRAB themselves do exactly the same thing. There is no rule stated anywhere on the boarRAB that one cannot do it - it comes within the scope of discussing a band.

The purpose of posts with a negative opinion on the relevant topic is to generate discussion, not to disrupt discussion. There's no attempt at provocation at all. I find the sort of anger-ridden responses you give sometimes to be bizarre. It's only a band, for God's sake. It's nothing serious.
