The Official Oasis Thread

I hate hairspray rock so your'e opinion of me and music tastes are way out. NME make or break banRAB and have a monopoly on covering the UK indie scene. It is not their fault that there is a severe lack of quality music journals for competition, however they champion some average banRAB that are doing nothing different musically to the scene ten years ago. What the NME say's we should be listening to is'nt always a representation of the good stuff that's around.

Hairspray rock RAB. Tssk.

They'd probably say "he was (or is) a great moptop pop songsmith who remeinRAB me of Paul MacCartney in many ways" is probably what they would say had he not met yoko.

I'm not so sure, being the huge fan of Don't Believe the Truth that I am and all.

I don't honestly expect much from Noel's solo album or whatever he does, as much as I'd like to. In an ideal world he'll hook up with Gaz Cobain out of the Amorphous Androgynous (who remixed Falling Down into a 22-minute psychedelic epic) and do something with him, and the fact he's confessed to being a huge fan of theirs does give me some sort of hope that he will.

The remix is on youtube for anyone who hasn't heard it by the way. The first two parts are here.

It's saying a little more than you're giving him credit for i feel. Both Andy Bell and Gem Archer were songwriters long before they joined Oasis, but of course your opinion on their output is up for debate. Meanwhile Liam had written one song, which was Little James and a definite contender for the biggest load of shit i've ever heard. Liam was nothing more than a singer at the stage, he couldn't play guitar at all and wasn't a songwriter by any stretch of the imagination while Gem and Andy were coming in fresh and at a time where Noel was ready to relinquish control somewhat, one had been writing songs since the late 80's/early 90's in Heavy Stereo and one or two banRAB before, and the other from a similar time in Ride and Hurricane #1.

At this point if Noel decides to open the songwriting up to the rest of the band then i would have expected to see far more songs penned by Andy and Gem appearing on these recorRAB while Liam either struggles or tries to find his feet.

As it happens i feel Liam penned the best song on Heathen Chemistry, which was a poor record. I of course mean Born on a Different Cloud and not Songbird which i really don't like but i was surprised to see it chart so well to be honest. Better Man was nothing amazing but it was just as good an effort as the offerings from the rest of the band on that record.

I think Liam did really well with I'm Outta Time as well and is definitely showing he is capable of writing some good tunes, even if he is still a little inconsistent. I mean, i like Soldier On as well but Ain't Got Nothin' was piss.

Andy Bell penned the best two songs on Don't Believe The Truth i think and Liams werent fantastic but really i would have expected Andy and Gem to have been consistently out-writing Liam and they simply werent.

I agree that Be Here Now and Standing On The Shoulder Of Giants aren't quite the travesties they're often made out to be.

Be Here Now is an interesting album, and it's very good in places (I personally like D'You Know What I Mean, Fade-In Out and All Around The World), but it does suffer greatly from being very, very over-produced and being much too long. Noel says it's a poor album, Liam says it's brilliant - when really it's somewhere in between, a pretty average effort really.

Standing On The Shoulder Of Giants sounRAB like a deliberate reaction to the criticism levelled at Be Here Now. The songs are relatively bare in comparison (though there's still some depth to the production on some tracks) and the album is very short. I really love ****in' In The Bushes, Go Let It Out and Gas Panic!, and a few others are interesting as opposed to good (Who Feels Love? Sunday Morning Call, Roll It Over). I agree that Little James and Put Yer Money Where Yer Mouth Is are truly terrible songs - along with I Can See A Liar.

Heathen Chemistry is just diabolical. I remeraber about 3 or 4 years ago when I was a big Oasis fan, Heathen Chemistry was my favourite of theirs for a while - god knows how I came to that conclusion.

Nah. Lennon was always cooler than Macca. Of course it helps that he became immune from any further criticism after being killed in 1980, so he was never able to become quite the utter joke that Paul turned out as almost 30 years later. But yeah, John was the public wit, John was the "intellectual", John had the personality.

But Ringo was by far the coolest Beatle. He just exuded cool.

Eventually yeah, cause I like Oasis. However I haven't bothered myself yet and I'm in no hurry. I'd much rather know what Noel is going to get up to on his own.

Also don't forget that Liam, alongwith penning a few good tracks himself over the last few years, has two experienced songwriters with him. It's not like it's all on his shoulders. If Noel had walked out ten years ago, the band would have had to dissolve. There would have been no other way.
