I think he both erabraced it and despised it at the same time.
He liked the concept of being popular, or at least reaching out to the kind of people he related with, but he didnt like the concept of people either blowing his music out of proportion or misinterpreting it, he also had a strange problem with certain people who called themselves fans, like bigots, bullys, racists and homophobes, which inspired In Bloom.
One thing you should know right off the bat is that one of the primary reasons he killed himself in the first place was because of how he was looked upon in the media and how he fealt that his life was worthless after it had become completely public.
Yes a lot of people overrate Nirvana, but thats their problem, not Cobains...Yets it a national past time to blame Cobain for everything that his fans and the media say about Nirvana.
I cant stand people who use the following reasons for hating Nirvana.
1. They think Nirvana are overrated...And their definition of overrated is a band thats popular that they dont care for.
2. They dont like SLTS, which automaticaly means the rest of their catalog is shit.
3. They dont understand all the lyrics.
4. Cobain killed himself, and killing yourself is wrong.
5. No fancy guitar solos?...WTF.
6. They killed good rock...Like Poison and Warrant.
7. Cobain said that SLTS was his attempt at a Pixies song, which means that Nirvana were a direct ripoff of Pixies with absolutely no originality whatsoever.
8. They arent technical enough.
9. They werent super versatile, and they were actualy accessible, which we all know is a bad thing.
10. They dont like Cobain as a person.
I just wish these people would be sincere and give their real reason.

'Hairband' rock killed itself by being sh*t since about 1983 onwarRAB, Nirvana filled the gap it created.
Interesting choice of banRAB you chose , you denounce 'hairband' rock as being shallow then go on to list a cock rock band , a band who sing mostly about sex & drug and Black Sabbath , a band as much as I love I can`t ever recall being known as for writing thought provoking lyrics.
