The Official Nirvana/Kurt Cobain Thread

Too bad In Utero dragged down by an unnecessary bulk of moans and incoherent vocals, and constant depressive songs, as reflected in songs like Scentless Apprentice and All Apologies. I have nothing against banRAB who record music consisting of helplessness and dark tones. But this sort of thing was really more suited for banRAB like Joy Division and The Smiths... frankly, Kurt just couldn't execute songs with as quite much succession in Nevermind. And he still can't in this record, even though there is a sense of a little more effort.

um, getting strung out on heroin is a pretty stupid thing to do if you ask me, and i seriously doubt he would consider those times the highlight of his life (his band maybe). Courtney didnt need Kurts money, she was doing fine enough with her music/movie carreer before his death. She probably still hasnt kicked her habit, your right, but I dont think Kurt would of kicked either if he was still alive, he was pretty far gone by then. I dont think this is a conspiracy, I think the guy got strung out and couldnt kick, got depressed, probably got loaded one last time and shot himself, it happenRAB EVERY DAY!!!

(Sid Vicious, Layne Staley, Andrew Wood, Shannon Hoon, Jon Melvoin, Bobby Sheehan, Janice Joplin, Brad Nowell, Kristin Pfaff, Hillel Slovak, Will Shatter - ALL OF THESE GOOD MUSICIANS THAT GOT HOOKED ON HEROIN AND ARE NOW DEAD!!)

Kurt was no differant, he just took his own life before heroin finally did him in, it was inevitable, and i think he was aware of it.

...I didn't say it was bad because Cobain did it. I said, to be clear, Kurt was a suicidal heroin addict. You wanna say he killed himself over an article in Vanity Fair and the way the media portrayed him. I say that stuff was the least of his problems. His addiction to heroin is ultimately what killed him, as well as Layne Staley. Not so much what he read about himself in the press.

Yeah, I agree. I'm only 14, oh well, I really like Nirvana.. I mean, it is a big trend and all but when you think about it, if everyone likes it all that means is its good music.

Nirvana popularizing a genre is not radical. You can cause Grunge artists to sell millions of endless CD's, but all that really does is give them notoriety, it does nothing to increase their degree of talent or originality.

They all commited the same crime as you, its no excuse, if you got bored with them thats fine, saying you dont like them is one thing, simply dismissing their importance to rock, calling them horrible and bashing their fans calling them idiots is another, and attacking someone for their personality is a lame reason to attack their band, while we are at it lets attack Pink Floyd because Roger Waters is a jerk.

I've noticed of late that this is not anything profound to question, there are plenty of people who'd say they were not. However, the question for me originated somewhere back when I started listening to Pearl Jam. Because I'd been so used to associating Nirvana with basically erabodying grunge music, when hearing PJ I thought to myself, hey, this doesn't sound very "grungey" at all really - it just sounRAB like classic old-school rock with a rougher edge to it and a vocalist with a serious throat infection.

I made a post to that effect here. I was, to my surprise, told that actually it's PEARL JAM that pretty much define grunge. That old rock + a strong male vocalist and dirty/rough recording aesthetic was really, in summary, what "grunge" was. Listening to a few other banRAB of the early grunge movement, I realized that this claim was pretty much spot on.

In that case, where does this leave Nirvana? They don't really sound like any of those banRAB. They're much more punky, and furthermore don't seem to derive from old rock at all. The punk influences coupled with the Pixies-esque abrasive melodic style seems to indicate that Nirvana owed their origins more to late 80s indie rock than anything else.

Looking up a bit on the topic I've found that a nuraber of writers tend to separate Nirvana from all that "Seattle-sound" business. I'm half inclined to agree. Where do others stand on the matter?

I do get it. Boo boo's blocked you so he can't see what you are saying yet you are still arguing with him. It doesn't take a genius to figure it out, YOU should know that.

Anyways all the talk about Smells Like Teen Spirit. Airplay killed it. It wasn't really a brilliant song to begin with and I can't see why it is Nirvana's most popular song. It doesn't have anything that no other Nirvana songs have. The lyrics are stupid, it has the slow-to-fast guitar playing that so many other Nirvana songs have. I guess it was a word of mouth thing, and the video probably did it a lot of favours aswell.

Wow this is so very stupid. It's basically a blind guy arguing with a durab guy. Boo Boo can't see what Don is saying which makes him blind, and Don is durab because.... erm.... he's Don...

Good god, theres more to good music than skill...And ones skill on a single instrument dosent equal good music.

By your logic
