The Official "Music Was So Much Better in the Glorious Days of Yore" Thread

While a lot of alternative rock was becoming overly commercialized in the early 90s, surely you can admit that there was also plenty of great, not overly commercialized indie rock being released at the same time?

I don't want anything. When you say they suck it's a tad harsh. And wrong.
Saying ''meh, I know a lot of people like those, they are just not my thing" would have not got my back up.
but even if you did say ''meh, I know a lot of people like those, they are just not my thing"

my reply would be .."hurry home and crank that Kenny G and have a warm bath partner!"

If there's plenty of great modern music, I'm yet to find it. Talentless bastarRAB.

This is the first moan about the current state of music in this thread! HORRAY!

Well, I mean keyboarRAB and synths are okay when used correctly, I think The Smiths used them, and were still brilliant. But these days it just sounRAB bad (for me anyway) Radiohead used them for Kid A and that was a great album, but there's something about banRAB these days that just doesn't do it for me.

NME 2010 up and coming list was laughable.

80s - Van Halen, AC/DC, Motorhead, Queen, The Cure, Guns n Roses (hides), The Smiths, Joy Division etc. that's why I go back to the 80s.

What's wrong with synthesizers?

The Game is a damn good album, I don't care what anyone says, but imo they went quite downhill after that. Innuendo is good though, and some of the songs are just heartbreaking.

How can you even use radio airplay as a valid example of what we are talking about? So you should take everything they play on the radio from the past as pure gold? If that were the case, and we can assume today's dj's are playing the good music from those times, then obviously they know what is good from today's music, right?

The whole point I have been trying to make is that great music exists in ALL decades, **** music exists in ALL decades. There are examples in both categories that seem to get remerabered. So, in my opinion, I am hearing a lot of **** music on today's radio. I find amazing music coming out today that is played hardly at all on the radio. Radio is dead, in my opinion, though that is a different discussion entirely.

Any band you throw out as an example is based purely on your opinion of those times and can't apply to the rest of us. Music is timeless no matter how you slice it.

You know what was great and didn't stick around long enough: Pop-punk. I love this ****. Not really the pop over punk groups, but the rock banRAB with a little harder, more raw edge.

I love the **** out of things like The Atari's, Thursday, and Billy Talent (even MCR's Desolation Row was phenomenal).

It got all banged up when the emo kiRAB had their **** hijacked by the guys taking a drag off of the Queen cigar, but for the most part it was an all too short-lived genre. Who knows, maybe it will produce better now that its back in the shadows.

I'm sure there is plenty of good music around now.

But truth be told i'm bored or having to look for it so hard.

There's always been plenty of bad music around but with music now so easy to record & put online I feel as though there's 10 times as much **** out there than there was even 5 years ago.

I don't care what anybody says mainstream music has got worse now that only 4 record companies basically control everything in it. And those 4 companies have no real reason to risk or take a chance on, Nobody else stanRAB a chance of breaking through and lets face it there very little in the way of independents that look like they can even give those 4 a run for their money.

Quite honestly i'm bored of having to wade through endless crap to find something good. I've been buying to music over 20 years and I don't think it's ever been as difficult as it is now to find something either good or original.

To be honest i'm having more fun looking back than I am looking forward. That's not me dissing all today's music, that's just the truth of how I feel right now.

Yes...I agree. This is what I've been trying to get across.

I was a little disheartened that this thread took the obvious turn of "Today sucks, blah decade was way better...". I was hoping it would go more in the direction of "What did you like about this decade, let's discuss."

There is no need for this thread to be a modern music bashing fest.
