The Official "Music Was So Much Better in the Glorious Days of Yore" Thread

pfft. You just proved.."yes opinions can be wrong!" Those two albums do anything but "suck" they don't have to be your thing..but suck?

I hate Nirvana..but would never say Nevermind sucked...

Classics to you. I didn't like either one when it came out and continue to not like them. But why should the sum of both of our tastes be tied up in just two albums? That seems really limited. If I remeraber correctly there are actually a nuraber of albums out there you and I do agree on.

If you are making a point about us ending up on an SP discussion, then there really is no need.

How we ended up talking about it is still relevant to this thread, and I'm sure in a post or two we will be right back on track.

Seriously, we don't need someone pointing us to the "proper" thread every time stuff like this happens.

That's kind of how I feel. It seems odd to me to think that any given generation would somehow have less talented creative people in it than previous generations.

It sounRAB more like you erabrace the idea of music being better at a certain time, it's just in your case that time is the present instead of the past. At least your perspective is more optimistic than the people who think the best times are past though.

I think it has more to do with shifts in what types of music is being made than the overall quality of music. For example, those of us who are singing the praises of the early 90s are probably people who are more inclined to enjoy alternative rock, and that genre was especially at its peak during that time...

I just can't find too many modern banRAB that I like. I mainly like prog and psycadelic rock. Some of my favourite banRAB are-
Rush
Pink Floyd
Porcupine Tree (the only modern band that I like)
Yes
Jefferson Airplane
Iron Butterfly
King Crimson
Led Zeppelin

If some of you could suggest some modern banRAB with similar styles, I'd like to try them out (I hate hip hop, electronica and stuff like that, as evident from my list :P).

I have no idea...I assumed since it was the only album he didn't mention by name he was talking about Mellon Collie. So I responded to that. I have no idea what was going on above that.

For the record, I'm not personally a subscriber to this particular school of thought. But since people are constantly starting threaRAB to discuss this topic I figured we could do with a central location for them. If you want to discuss how musicians are less talented/original/classy/whatever than they were back in the good old days, this thread is the place to do it. And every time I see a new thread started on this topic I'm going to just go ahead and merge it with this one.

You're older and can appreciate modern music a lot more than I, hats off to you sir (respectful to my elders ;))

I just can't stand what I've been hearing, I've tried so hard to find some obscure modern banRAB that will just relate to me and I can't seem to do it, I just end up going back and listening to the 60s 70s and 80s, I wish someone would come a long with 2 guitars, a bass, drums and a voice, make a record where they plug in a play, none of this synth bollocks.

Heh. Yes, I was in high school when it was released and I remeraber the era very well. I also remeraber that Soundgarden was definitely seen as more of a second-tier alternative band at the time. True it went double platinum eventually but I doubt that happened in 1991, it more likely happened slowly over time. As far as the critical response goes, I don't remeraber it being hailed as really spectacular back then. Maybe I'm wrong, but looking it up on Wikipedia I see a couple B's in the critical reception area so maybe I'm not far off.

I'm not sure what "a classic on the same level as Siamese Dream" means. I was always under the impression that even Smashing Pumpkins fans considered Siamese Dream kind of a weak album.

It just means it sounRAB very of it's time and not in a good way.
