The Official Live-Action "Cowboy Bebop" News & Discussion Thread

Cowboy Bebop was one of the first "geek world" things I discovered after comics. I loved the series, animated movie, and the music is very good. I' am about thirty percent excited about a live action move, and seventy percent terrified it wil get screwed up badly.

**** Keanu Reeves. No, but seriously, didn't we already know that this was going to be Spike and Jet's Excellent Adventure? By the way, here's the ANN article.

That pic was from wiki, its from a code geass premiere so it can't be from to long ago.

He looks a lot better in your pic but still, hes no spike. But Steve Blum has never done anything but voice acting as far as I can tell. Hes not going to be able to do a live action film all of a sudden.

Though, I'm more worried about whos going to play Faye Faye. Very important role...or not. We still don't even know whats the story is going to be.

Constantine doesn't chew gum. That was a complete and utter betrayal to the character. The whole point is he's not going to change by start chewing gum now. Now that he doesn't have cancer anymore, he's going to light up another cig.

Constantine seeing dead people and having to kill himself - LAME.

Constantine being sacrilegious while using HOLY WATER and CROSSES as weapons - lame. Yeah he hates Heaven and angels, but somehow things that syrabolize faith which Constantine does not have he can still use those as weapons!

Fox cannot be trusted with this material. Someone list me one good reason why we can trust 20th Century Fox after all the atrocities they have committed.

I 100% belive that all the music on the show, is original. Now, i can understand if certain songs were homages from others. But as for originality, it has it all as far as im concerned.

Of course, there are a few anime out there that borrow song themes from movies/etc. One off the top of my head is the original Bubblegum Crisis, one of the BGM is basicly a homage from the opening bgm to Blade Runner, and another Knight Sabers song comes from an intro to a song on the "Streets of Fire" soundtrack.

I just thought of someone to play Jet, Kurt Russel. Now, hear me out. He fits the physiqe of Jet, and he could have a shaved head and grow a beard. Accually, he would look pretty bad 'a being Jet, like Snake Plissken and Jet did a fusion. I just thought of that just now.

Well, i am a huge Kurt Russel fan, so that can be clouding my judgement. But hey, at least i got a name out there...

I'm not saying he'd be my first choice. But he's a better choice than Keanu.

Queen Latifah would be a better choice than Keanu.

Geez.
I wish people would stop dogging on Keanu just becauseof Bill & frickin' Ted.

As far as him as Spike, well we know Keanu can kick some butt on screen, and he pulled off a overtly badass in Constantine (Plus that role makes me think of Spike's addiction to nicotine.)

They could just decide to cut her out of the production completely, similar to what's being done with Anthro animals and Kuririn in the Dragon Ball movie. Of coarse, that would also be removing a great and vital character...

But otherwise, Bebop seems much easier to portray in live-action than most anime. I just hope it doesn't end up like some generic sci-fi movie with the character's personalities changed.

We're getting a tad bit off topic, people. Although Fox's track record for adaptations is somewhat relevant, this thread is about the Bebop movie, not whether Constantine was a bastardization of it's source material. Stay on target, my fellow otaku.

Anyway, the recent news does give me a bit of hope. They are at least trying to be close to the original anime. I mean, CB was made in a Western style, so straying from that would be a major no no.

I don't think it's irrelevant because you can see how Keanu approaches and has messed up a beloved, adapted character.

Keanu simply did not capture Constantine.

Keanu isn't right for Spike. He's too old for Spike. Keanu cannot erabrace and live in all the complex facets of that character. I know kung fu is not enough.

Haha, as soon as the Keanu as Spike rumor was announced, I thought up "Spike and Jet's Excellent Adventure", and it sounRAB too good for me to not call it that. I think Keanu was good in the Matrix, I just don't think he will make a good Spike. Just my personal opinion.

I don't see anything wrong with casting someone a bit older (someone with actual range as an actor), but his previous performances lack the subtle nuances required to properly portray Spike. He's either going to go overboard with being broody and grimdark, or way too snarky/goofy. Either way, we lose. It's not going to be Spike, it's going to Keanu being himself, being called Spike.

I think discussing his previous performances where he completely was miscast and did not accurately portray an established character is entirely relevant.

We'll see how it goes, but I don't really have much confidence in Hollywood. Sometimes they get lucky but I think of things like Dungeons and Dragons which is awful (and how easy would that have been to make a movie of?). Going to anime, the Speed Racer adaptation didn't get received well despite higher production values.
