Whatever. Serenity got great reviews and the fanbase knew the movie was coming. It's simply clear that the fanbase wasn't as large as Universal thought to make the movie a huge hit.
Did the movie draw in many besides the Firefly faithful? Probably not.
The mistake was making a big budget Firefly movie as a studio tentpole and releasing it in the typical dumping ground that is Septeraber where movies usually don't make big money. The demand for a big budget Firefly movie wasn't there.
Serenity/Firefly really has nothing to do with Bebop though and besides a couple similarities and common elements they are nothing alike. Serenity/Firefly never went as far or as brutal as Bebop.
