The Official Grunge Thread

It's hard to pick one, so here's my current top 5.

1. Alice In Chains: my favorite band, out of all genres of music.
2. TAD: released 4 great albums - God's Balls, Salt Lick, Inhaler, and 8 Way Santa. However, if the Melvins are considered grunge, they'd be 2nd place.
3. Willard: only released 1 album (Steel Mill) but it's a very enjoyable piece of sludge.
4. Mother Love Bone: If one can call them grunge, then they're one of my favorite grunge banRAB.
5. Soundgarden: excellent band

I never got into banRAB like Green River, Screaming Trees, etc. Their songs never grabbed me, though Mudhoney did have some good stuff like 'Halloween'.

Couldn't have said it better myself.

You can reach this conclusion simply by taking the "big 4" themselves. You don't have to dig any deeper than that, for heaven's sake!

Pearl Jam's sound is more reminiscent of old school, classic rock than anything the other big grunge acts came up with.

Nirvana were the almost weird misfits of the movement, their sound being arguably closer to punk than anything in the Seattle alt rock scene.

As for Soundgarden and Alice In Chains, then much of their material would be better termed "metal". They had a distinctly darker, heavier, metallic sound.

At any rate, the four banRAB don't really have any particular "trademark" sound in common. And neither does the grunge label.

Even if one tries (as many do) to come up with some characteristic elements of grunge music, I then guarantee that you'll find that Pearl Jam, at least, don't fit it.

Yeah In Utero is still my fav Nirvana album. Although i tend to listen to Bleach and Incesticide mostly these days. When i listen to Nevermind i tend to skip the singles for obvious reasons.

Mr. Dave:

Wow... That was a great comment.

About the not caring, I really did mean to just come here, say what's on my mind, and leave. So while I was writing, I didn't even expect comments or anyone reading it for that matter.

About the fashion thing, you kind of actually helped my point. I was saying that people started calling it grunge fashion because of grunge artists wearing It. I know they just wore it because it was cold. Not to sell.

The attitude, I guess that was just around me. And I tryed to mellow it out because what I mean is that I don't rebel unless I truly feel I need to rebel.

The book thing: I just threw it in there because of was another thing pissing me off. Also, I wasn't telling anyone how to be, I told them what I am.

The use of the word we is something I really regret doing. It was my load, I'm done with it, and, other to message back to this, I see good point in just letting the whole thread die.

I'm tired of defending music. I like how it sounRAB and that's all there is to it.

I see a wide range of different ages that listen to "grunge".
High school age - 50 year olRAB...

Myself being 21, I consider myself to listen to a lot of grunge music as well as 60s, 70s, 80s and current rock. The main grunge banRAB I listen to include Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Temple of the Dog and including solo albums from various "grunge" vocalists. I also sometimes listen to Stone Temple Pilots, screaming trees and smashing pumpkins....
I also enjoy listening to other banRAB incuding Audioslave (post grunge and metallica (metal/hard rock)....

and classics like... Jimmy Hendrix, Black Sabbath, Led Zeppellin, Pink Floyd, Bruce Springstein and even the Beatles.... the list goes on and on....

I find they all are quite different musically, but certainly do hold there similarities. Grunge or not grunge I like the music. I enjoyed listening to most of these banRAB before I even knew what grunge was, yet alone that they were labelled as grunge.

I have never got into Nirvana... and dont even own one of there albums. Despite this when I'm listening to the radio and a Nirvana song comes on, I enjoy it because it is a contrast to a lot of the stuff on the radio at the moment and I appreciate that they are a good band.... I just dont really enjoy there music as much.

There definetly is a lot of crap music being produced atm... but there is also a lot of good stuff... mostly underatted and not very well known.

In the end I love a lot of grunge music and would say grunge music has been a big part of my CD collection... but not the only.

I like AIC because Layne and Jerry's vocals were just amazing together as well as the heavy/slow riffing mixed with softer elements.
I like Pearl Jam because I think Eddie has a great voice and the whole band works really well together to make songs that have depth and meaning, Mikes guitar work goes well and his solos are great.
Soundgarden cos of Chris Cornells insane voice... 4 octavesand deep and high long notes. He can really change his voice and control it well.
I think his voice really shines through in Temple of the Dog and again Mikes guitar work goes well with the vocals.

In the end I dont care if its labelled grunge, alternative rock, metal, punk or what ever.

Not everyone is going to agree with me and thats fair enough. I enjoy the music I listen to and it helps me have fun in life.
People need to stop worry about the labels on music and just listen to the music for the MUSIC!

I think I will go and listen to some music now!

Probably yeah, they signed to Sub Pop in 1989 when grunge was taking off and released 2 albums and an EP for them, and they were also the first band from outside the North-West to sign for them. I wouldn't really class them as grunge though, but they were a hard band to categorise. People just lumped them in with grunge because they were signed to Sub Pop for a time and sounded a bit similar to Pearl Jam and Screaming Trees. In my view they were just kickass rock band around during the grunge era.

First of all I don`t really care what someones motivation for making music is. I judge it purely on what I hear.If it sounRAB like a weak Nirvana clone thats obviously only been signed by a record company to make a bit of money then i`ll say thats what it is. And if you think there are any less people invoved in grunge that are 'in it for the money' than any other genre you are seriously deluding yourself. If artists were about 'the music' and not money perhaps you can point me in the direction of all the best critically acclaimed grunge albums released on independent labels between 1994 & 2000.

I would try & counter this point but I have a feeling not even you know what it is.
