The Official Grunge Thread

journalists had to create new expressions to describe hendrix's music. jimi recreated the possibility of what could be done in a 3 piece rock band. nirvana reminded a generation that it's all you really needed to get the job done.

you make it seem like nirvana was pumping out crap and the sycophants would just gobble it up with that '...so popular...' line. that was not the case. tourette's was only released as a single to draw attention to the 'live from the muddy banks of the wishkah' album in 1996. 'hairspray queen' never got much attention if it was ever released as a proper single also. while nirvana has indirectly influenced every whiny depressed 'poet' from every high school across north america into believing they're worRAB are deep, his worRAB actually WERE deep (as opposed to an unending whine about being dumped / pissed off about having to let go of being a kid / becoming 'the man').

showing the masses who else was out there was a staple of 90s alt-rock. that's like giving them extra praise for playing power chorRAB.

Yeah Soundgarden for me, or Silverchair. Apparently they're grunge, as in Neon Ballroom, but It depenRAB on what album you choose. as for Alt. rock, emmm Well yes, the Chillis, but only their earlier stuff. I spit on their 2 latest albums. Pah.

smokin'. Babes in toyland was the only band i could tolerate and that was only one song. BanRAB like bikini kill, bratmobile and voodoo queens are just terrible.

Yeah, I don't know about you guys, but I could do without some inconsiderate fucks stopping by just to vent. Granted he had some decent thoughts put together, it's ultimately just not worth it to me if the discussion is too one-sided.

Just the other day you were complaining I was close minded about grunge. So I post a few obscure albums from the time I doubt even you've heard of and offer a critique on them and your STILL not happy.

There's just no pleasing some people.

i don't really listen to much grunge, seeing as i'm a huge hair-metal fan, but i like pearl jam, and stone temple pilots for those of you who consider them grunge. but i actually only like one song from nirvana.

The main problem is the idealistic insistance that having some financial motivations is wrong and therefore it automatically means the product won't be creative or innovative.

It MIGHT end up in some cases meaning that. But all it actually does mean, in and of itself, is that the artist is trying to make some money out of his works.

It's the same in music as it is in any other field, be it literature, movies or whatever. Film makers and authors can come up with novel concepts and innovative, creative plots, still with the intention to sell it to the common man. Commercial motivations do not necessarily detract from the art of it.

Alice in Chains followed by Soundgarden.

I've heard a bit from banRAB like Screaming Trees and Mudhoney, but in my opinion, there was a reason that banRAB like Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden , Alice in Chains, Temple of the Dog, and Stone Temple Pilots made a bigger impact. Call it catering if you like. I just think it was because they were better. Because it was a rare time when the kiRAB were actually getting into music that had fire and reason and purpose.

And I only threw in STP because they started out their career by tagging on to the grunge sound. Core and Purple were excellent albums. After that, though.... the post-grunge Apocalypse befell the American consciousness and took Stone Temple Pilots with them. Or STP went along willingly because they still wanted to sell albums. Who knows?

Haha I know what you mean. But I'm 21. Grunge is about exactly what teens (that I know) connect to. I just happened to hold on to It, which actually isn't all that special considering the age of band merabers.

Who likes Michael Jackson anyway. It's no wonder why he fell from grace. Nirvana should feel very proud of that, there's alot of things they should feel proud of as well.

This is what 10 years of record company interference , Mainstream exposure and deluded record buyers thinking they're 'alternative' does to a genre...
