The Official "Drawn Together" News and Everything else Thread

Comedy Central will be making huge mistake if they cancel the show. So what if it doesn't get big ratings its proven to be a great show with a loyal fanbase.

*Sigh* Unfortunately 'todays' network executives don't see it that way but hopefully there's some light at the end of this tunnel.

Drawn Together gets HUGE ratings though, it doesn't make sense. The show is the number one show on college campuses and I believe it's the second highest rated show on Comedy Central after South Park

Reportedly, ratings are not the issue. The creators have indicated two reasons that the show is under threat of cancellation.

1. Production expense.
2. Protests from advertisers and watchgroups, most specifically the PTC.

I don't think either of the two are reason enough to cancel the show myself. As for the first, they could slash the budget. As much as I love the animation on DT, the quality comes from the writing. I just don't buy the second reason. South Park and Silverman both come under a lot of fire for their content, and Comedy Central doesn't seem worried about that. And besides, even if DT does raise protests, they could always tone down the content too. It doesn't need the gross-out stuff and the shock humor to be funny.

I find it INCREDIBLY hard to believe content and controversy is the reason CC would cancel it..Wouldn't they have cancelled South Park in its first season if that were the case?

It's pretty much down to ancillary profits. There's no hew & cry for DT merchandise, while I just saw South Park Christmas tree ornaments tonight. It's too adult a show to get syndicated, as editing the eps for general broadcast would render them utterly unintelligible (and about 8 minutes long). Basically, all Comedy Central gets from the series are the aired episodes and the DVD sales. The expense of the show is such that, they can make a buttload of cash off a yawner series like Li'l Bush, even though it gets crappy ratings.

I think the final nail in the coffin, though, is the Writers Guild strike. To have episodes for a fourth season ready by, say, May or June 2008, they'd need to start writing them now. Ain't gonna happen. So, I'm sad to say, I think we've seen the end of the series, barring astonishing DVD sales for season three.

They would never shoot for a May 2008 premiere date with Season 4; there's no way they could have shows ready by then, even if they could write now. An October premiere date is possible, but to be honest, Season 4 likely wouldn't debut until early 2009- by which time the strike should be long settled.

Which is is precisely why it shouldn't rely so heavily on those things, IMO. There have been some genuinely funny moments on Drawn Together which don't involve disgusting body functions, racial stereotypes or graphic violence, but the DT writers act as though they need to feed themselves on shock humor in order to survive. Just because your show is on Comedy Central doesn't mean that you have to pander to the lowest common denominator and try to out-South Park South Park. The premise of all those diverse cartoon character types sharing a residence is enough to carry a show on its' own without resorting to R-rated humor. I've always followed a quote from the late Groucho Marx: "If you have to be dirty to be funny, then you're not that funny."

Perhaps if DT worked as hard on being funny and marketable as they did on being un-PC, it might have a longer shelf life.

I think the thing is that these cartoon characters are basically satirical degenerate versions of their counterparts, so they have to be a tad more risque in their humor. But they could also play more with the cliches of each character as well, which they sometimes seem to just ignore.
