The next big "mon" show?

Years after "Pokemon" first hit the scene, it still remains on the air, though its impact is far less now than at its peak. "Digimon" fell victim to ratings in Japan after four seasons, though it has continued to hang on cable in America in reruns, and finally has brought out the remaining mini-movies. "Monster Rancher" of course was canceled several years ago and remained only in limited release on VHS and DVD, but recently had a new deal for another release on DVD.

Aside from these trailblazers, the "mon" genera has been pretty dormant, "Moncolle Knights" appearing briefly several years ago before pretty much sinking from sight. Now at last, it seems we may have another show with aspirations of becoming the next "Pokemon"--"Mix Master".

With 39 half-hour episodes marketed at October's MIPCOM, "Mix Master" is based on a hot on-line role-playing game in Korea, Japan and China. Sunwoo Entertainment has been working on the show since 2003, and is working in partnership with KBS, Xai, Omni, and NA. According to the Sunwoo Entertaiment USA president, "Mix Master": A) is 2D with 3D elements, B) tells the story of kids who love the monster-mixing game find themselves using their skills from the card game when the game world enters the real world, C) has the monsters actually participate in the show's storylines, D) is supposed to emphasize plot and story, filled with action and humor, and not be mere reeactments of game play E) is to go from being an on-line game, cards and TV show to eventually expanding to game consoles, mobile and computer as well.

The show is being promoted by KIPA (a non-profit organization established by Korea's Ministry of Information and Communication to promote Korean animation), and used a writing team of both Japanese and Americans in order to create international appeal, and yet not lose the base of game players in Korea, Japan and China. I must say the designs of the monsters and kids look rather colorful and interesting. Obviously the show had to be looking for American buyers at MIPCOM, and given that it is aimed at age 7-12, my guess is that if the show does cross the pond, most likely it'll end up in a time block like Miguzi, Kids WB, Jetix, Nickelodeon, 4KidsTV, DIC Kids, etc.

From the sounds of things, it doesn't appear like it's another "Yu-Gi-Oh", but that the monsters of "Mix Master" are actual characters in the true tradition of the "mon" genera. 1 I'm hoping that the creators have taken a look at what worked and what didn't in "Pokemon", "Digimon", and MR; and have come up with some new ideas to take the genera to another level.

Umm..,Guys,What He Men't was The Next Big Show with The Word Mon at The End,I think it will be Doraemon (If The FCC say's it's ok with The Nudity,The FCC say's it ok with The Crazzy Toad's Nudity,I think Doraemon will do just The Same) .

^_^

Doraemon Is not like Pokemon,Doraemon is about a Robot cat fome The Year 2112 that loves to eat Bean Cakes and Sevres a 12 Year Old Boy (13 In The Later Seasons) Name'd Nobita.

^_^

Pokemon was cute because it was the first one, and Digimon was a nice spin on things. I don't consider Yu-Gi-Oh! a monster show unless card games in general are considered that. Monster Rancher had the "adventure" aspect of the show down.. but everything else hasn't been all that great. Zatchbell seems to be doing alright in the ratings, though.

Pokemon is not really a fad anymore, if it was then it would have died with all the other similar shows and when the phenomenom of pokemon faded. It has proven over the years it is not just a 'fad' that goes away..

the phenomenom died, but Pokemon is still a strong series, dare i say an iconic character that is destined to be classic characters. In Japan there is no denying that but the US it is almost similar, while the first generation of PKMN fans grew over it as with most cartoons and 'kiddie' stuff, a lot of them remained, it now has more of a cult following by older fans, just as many other shows do, but Pokemon still appeals to new generations of young kids, many of them will grow out of them and others will also remain fans yet it will continue to draw new younger kids.

The movie earnings did drop a lot but the third movie still did more than decent, specially for an 'animated' film. The fourth movie had a very limited release and the others just came out on dvd so they don't count. It usually remains in the top 3 best ratings on Kids WB and gets high ratings around the world, there is still a lot of merchanidise available from clothes to toys and crap, the Trading Card Game revived from an almost dead game to sales close to Magic: The Gathering(most famous TCG). Sales of the games are still extremely high, in fact it is Nintendo's #2 best selling franchise, only beaten by Mario, beating the likes of Zelda, Donkey Kong and Metroid, while only been around for half as much time, in fact i beleive Mario will eventually be knocked down.

As you can see Pokemon is very much alive right now and will keep going on, it survived after the PKMN craze died, not many other franchises do that. I would think by now most people would recognize it as mroe than a fad, but if it takes 10 more years so be it.

Okay, first of all, Pokemon's no longer a fad. It's considered a franchise, what with the fan following, toys, series and what not.
Second, I was hoping this thread was talking about Doraemon, even though it's not a mon show.

Third, how come no one mentioned Lilo and Stitch? It's a mon show.

Well there is another season of digimon coming. (Yay!)

Thankfully there is Zatch Bell to keep me happy until the fifth season of digimon starts in the U.S.

UGH I AM SOOOO SICK OF HEARING LILO AND STITCH BEING A WANNABE POKEMON SHOW!!!!!! IVE WATCHED EVERY EPISODE, SEEN EVERY MOVIE AND IT IS NOT LIKE POKEMON IN ANY WAY!!!!!!

*Runs away screaming from the caps locks haters*

I'm a big fan of Lilo And Stitch and i'm just getting sick of everyone asking me or telling it's a pokemon rip off! I can't help it they ruined the first and second movie with the series and Stitch! The Movie.
