The Name of living animals and their name as food!?

Hi does anyone know why there was a split between the word for living animals and them as food? For example cow-beef and pork-swine??

Does anyone know what historical event caused this and in what year it occured?

i just know it occured in england, but i dont know what event caused this and when. Hope someone knows!
