Was that before or after Blazing Saddles - the first 'spoof' movie I can remember.
Airplane takes it over Naked Gun, although both were utterly brilliant along with Top Secret!. There hasn't been a decent spoof movie made in years; in spite of the litany of efforts - Meet teh Spartans, Scary Movie etc.
Last good spoof movie I saw was 'Wrongfully Accused', a spoof of the Fugitive, and funnily enough also starring Leslie Nielson! They never released it on DVD though so it's very hard to track down, but I'd definitely recommend it if you can get the VHS.
And have to offer a couterpoint to that recommendation. I didn't enjoy it all. It's like the second and third Naked Gun films, where they are trying just a little too hard and it just isn;t working.
Same goes for 'Loaded Weapon' that someone mentioned upthread.
Although Naked Gun is good Airplane is far better ! even the sequel is so funny .paticulally the William Shatner scenes .....in Airplane 1...love the automatic pilot bit when Julie Haggerty blows up the auto pilot when he deflates is so funny .in fact Airplane was voted number 1 funniest comedy film in these top hundred tv list things !
There are so many great spoof movies !...Blazing Saddles ,Robin Hood Men In Tights ,Top Secret , Loaded Weapon .Hot Shots 1/2 ,Scary Movie,Love At First Bite, Young Frankenstein , and many many more !
Rumack: Can you fly this plane, and land it?
Ted Striker: Surely you can't be serious.
Rumack: I am serious... and don't call me Shirley.
Rumack: You'd better tell the Captain we've got to land as soon as we can. This woman has to be gotten to a hospital.
Elaine Dickinson: A hospital? What is it?
Rumack: It's a big building with patients, but that's not important right now.
I love the gag too (paraphrasing here) when he says "Thats when I developed my drinking problem ... " and empties the glass on his face. Still used on nights us by us 20 years later
LoL I remember watrching that scene in the movie theatre when the film was first released. The audience just fell apart, it was mass hysterics. It was one of the funniest film moments in cinema.
